Line 6 HX Effects

Okay... So. First thing's first.

Volume X issues
As I mentioned, I had some wonkiness with the Dunlop Mini Volume X as an Expression controller at rehearsal on Wednesday. After more testing, my theory of the HX recording the sweep is wrong. Last night, I cleared the volume block in the signal chain, re-added it, and reassigned the Dunlop as the Exp. Worked perfectly as it was supposed to. Tonight I fired up the board and without making any changes, the Vol X went weird again. This time instead of doing volume 100 > 0 > 100 in one sweep from toe down to heel down, it was 0 > 100 > 0. Yay.

I tried the same cycle a couple times to be sure. Cleared out the block, re-added and reassigned. Worked perfectly again. Restart and... !@#$%^! :spit:

My new theory is that it's something in the 2.54 update. With HX 2.50, it worked great, no problems (and same with the Source Audio Dual Expression). I updated to 2.54 on Tuesday evening, and now the Volume X misbehaves. @Digital Igloo - any thoughts? It's not the end of the world of course, but definitely a little frustrating.

Another thing I noticed on 2.54 is that I moved around a couple presets, and for my main patch in particular, the HX didn't import the snapshots.

I'm hesitant to try going back to 2.50 and the previous Line 6 updater (if that's even possible?), because I have a couple gigs this weekend.

HX board build shots
That said, here's some fresh HX Board pron for you guys.

I still have a few bugs to work out, but it's a tight little board. I have a couple pedals that will rotate in/out of the Funk Face spot, mostly filter based stuff that the HX can't do... Funk Face, Bassballs, Pigtronix Bass Envelope Phaser.

It's not the cleanest cabling job I've ever done, but it's not bad. The Zuma is pretty badass, and that blue! Right now I have a 3 outlet strip underneath for the HX power block until my current doubler gets here, but I'm already digging that too... the USB ports are super handy for powering my G10 wireless & bluetooth page turner, and good for charging phones/ipads of course.

I also uploaded a little clip of the Octabvre (FX loop 1) and Funk Face (FX loop2) combo. First half is the Funk Face without dirt, second half I added the drive side.

Off HX topic for a sec sorry guys but was wondering what you use your FI for whether it's for original stuff or for cover songs? If covers what are you covering with it? I'm finding myself watching the demos daily and seriously contemplating getting one but one thing that has rescently turned me off is having to buy a midi interface to edit or import patches from a computer. I know the Roland one in their list of "working " devices is like 40 bucks (CAD) but it's just another thing to have to buy on an already pricey pedal. Thanks!

Make sure you raise a support ticket with Line 6 dude - it's all well and good to PM Digital Igloo here about it, but to make sure it's fixed for everyone it's best to let them know "officially"

Also, sweet looking board!

Thanks! It was in planning stages for a long time, good to finally have it built out.

A good tip about putting in a support ticket. Doing that now.

Perhaps it's related to a specific synth/effect, as opposed to a problem with all effects? Wonder if it's the same effect as what Gecko was using

I was just using a standard Volume block, so I suspect it's now a bug with exp pedals in general. :meh:

@Seanbassplayer No problem. I use it mainly for when I sub with an 80's cover band, for songs like Take On Me, Just Can't Get Enough, Don't Go, Like A Prayer, etc etc. I introduced their bassist to the Impact, and after he got one, he programmed a bunch of sounds, and we just uploaded them to my FI so I have all the same sounds he does.

Like you said, it's not a cheap investment, but it's definitely worth it. Without going to an actual keys synth, I'm convinced that it's the only way to go for bass synth. No other pedal-based synth comes close to what the Impact can do. Which is why I have it on the board... the HX synth options don't even come close to the FI. I'm actually contemplating getting a second Impact with some tax return money just to have a backup in case something happens to mine.

Thanks man appreciate the info. I've yet to hear a bad review about the FI and know it would be well worth the money. Your playing exactly the type of music I'd like to dive in to as well. I'll let you know if it happens.. Cheers!

It's not the DOD version, it's the Digitech re-release unfortunately.

It’s still the same people with the same philosophy under the same umbrella for the most part. Tom Cram is the guy over there so even digitech stuff is DOD stuff and DOD stuff is digitech stuff to me. Like it’s the same difference. But they still make stuff under the DOD label. And the meatbox is one of them.

Not yet, but program changes attached to snapshots work fine. Also I tried sending volume CC as well, and that works too. I guess sending CC for the filter should work without problems.
I'm worried about the behaviour of the filter, it sounds like a distortion when assigning exp pedal to freq of Autofilter, so I wonder if it does the same when assigning to a CC. But it make sense not to happen, because it depends on the filter itself...
Thanks for your answer

I wouldn't worry about the Autofilter distorting. The default preset has an 18dB peak on resonance. Dial the peak back and will clear up.

Bad news friends, another update with the Dunlop Vol X just FYI:
At this point, I'm pretty convinced that the trouble I'm noticing with the Vol X is from something in the last update. I've noticed that it now does something different every time I power up my HX, which is a problem I definitely didn't have before updating to 2.54.

Two gigs yesterday, and without changing any settings whatsoever:
- A.M Gig #1: power up and the volume block was at 10%. Had to delete the block to get things back to normal. Forgot to hit save. *facepalm
- P.M. Gig #2: Volume block (that I previously deleted and forgot to save the patch ... April Fool's! Joke's on me. lol) was at 0% on powering up the board. Deleted again and hit save this time. lol As I was doing some editing by foot during soundcheck, parameters that I would be editing would randomly return to zero. Unplugged the Vol X completely, and problem solved.

Kind of a bummer, but not the end of the world of course. I've got another gig this weekend that I don't want to jinx, so I'm going to wait til after that to try reverting back to 2.50.

Yep, something is definatley funky here. Had issues with the exp pedal, and also found routing problems. I don't know if this happened in the older FW as well, but I noticed that the Y split mode does not mix where the mixer is. I had a parallel path set up split right at the beginning and being mixed after the 8th block. The 8th block was a reverb and it affected the other path even though it was before the mixer block.

Interesting that there might be patch problems, too... I also noticed that when I re-imported my main patch after 2.54, it didn't bring in my snapshots. It had the little markings on parameters that indicate there ARE snapshots, but when I went to snapshot 2, all settings were identical to snapshot 1.

EDIT: Just for clarification, I had my main patch with snapshots set up before I even started messing with the Vol X.

I've now been messing with this unit, installed the HX Edit and it seems to work so far. However, I'm not sure whether I was falsely expecting a more visual thing going on (more like the Helix Native). This is what it looks like when I open it:

I bought some IR's from [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (Dave) and I'm amazed how different my 112 full range speaker sounds (playing through 112 PA cab wet, and the 212 bass cab dry).

There are some bugs in my version too. When I use the hands-free "mode", the parameters behave sketchy. Sometimes they jump to zero, which is quite annoying. Not terrible, but annoying.
With what I hear from the 2.54, I'll leave the 2.5 for a while.

I don't belive HX Edit fully supports the HX effects pedal yet. I believe I read that is what they currently are working on.
