Lost Loves

Yeah, so I don't know that I'd call them "lost loves", but I do seriously regret that I ever sold these three (web pics, not actual basses, but same same) -

I know, nothing "cool" or "fancy", but I enjoyed them way more than I should have. And the Aria was my very first bass, so there's that.

Maybe a depressing thread but what is your lost love? The one that you sold or traded for whatever was really important at the time and gives you the most regret.

I sold an unbelievably rare and cool Kids 12-string Bass. It was a monster. A dream bass. I sold it to fund a Life Insurance license before learning that I was not cut out to sell.

Who wants to share some trauma?

Mine was a 72 Rickenbacker I swear that after early 73 they never sounded the same

Mine wasn't sold or traded. It was stolen. A Stanley Clarke Signature Alembic. Bought it in Tokyo in about 1989 for £2000. Cost closer to 12,000 now. I try not to be better.

I realize I'm lucky in that a) I've never had a bass stolen and b) that the reasons for selling those that I sold ended up being good reasons and their replacements worked out even better.

The toughest ones to sell were my Lakland 55-02 and my Warwick FNA Jazzman 5. They were just outstanding basses but not ergonomically suited to me, and they ended up being to uncomfortable to play. I'll "always have feelings for them", but I've accepted the truth that selling them was the right thing to do because I was better off with their replacements.

However, I'm now at the point where replacing a current bass with something I'll love even more is getting really difficult. So I may get to experience this soon.

I forgot to mention it's a Veillette-Citron, I bought it in 1979 or so from Mayfield Music (RIP Barry).

I always regretted selling my first Rickenbacker 4001 back in '69. I regretted doing it instantly. The deepest regret that I have (to this day) is "loaning" my Ovation Magnum 3 to who I "thought" was a dear friend. He asked to use it for an "audition" he was going for. Never saw him again. Moved away.....damn him...

- My Black Korina Warmoth. That bass pulled riffs out of me I never knew I had. THAT is a good instrument and like a fool I sold it.

However, I’ve more than made up for these “losses” many times over so it’s all GOOD

While the '79 Sabre is, at this point, the one I'd rather still have, I also miss a '66 Jazz I had. It had the bound neck and lollypop tuners and was in amazing shape. The tone was so warm and it was light as a feather.

I used to have a nice acoustic fretless bass (I think a Michael Kelly?) It was stolen right from my car as I made a trip back into the studio. (lesson learned)

I had a custom built Tom Clement 6-String with Nordstrand pickups in it. Played and sounded awesome. Never had a need or use for a 6 but I loved the way it looked, sounded and felt. Couldn't justify keeping it. Wish I never sold it. So fun to noodle around on.
