Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

I have a GK 400RB-IV 210 combo that I really could not use as a stand-alone amp. The tens just did not do it and if I dug-in, it would fall apart. That was the eq pretty much flat and very little boost. Using the head into another cab sounded great as well as using the combo with another cab under it but even with the extension cab, you could tell the 210 was really not doing the job.

I called Don looking for advise on replacement speakers. He has seen this "problem" in the past and asked if I would ship him just the box(no amp or speakers) for him to work on. So I pulled everything out & boxed & shipped it.

About a week later(maybe ten days), Don calls me up and said its all done, it sounds great and its shipping the next day. I also had Don Build me a single 12 w/tweet to go under the GK. I get the two boxes, unpack everything, re-assemble the combo and stack it on top of the 1-12, plug it in, turn it on and...

OMG!@ Its a completely different rig! The combo now sounds amazing by itself and with the twelve under it, look out! Deep and punchy if you want it. CLEAN when you need it and the harder you push it, the better it sounds!

With the combo box, he used the existing port to install a tweeter(400 RB's don't have one) and then he installed a pair of delta 10's(i THINK they're Deltas, if I ever open it up, I'll take a look), and then he rear-ported the box and added a xover with L-pad.

Bottom line... If anyone reading these threads is in my situation of having a combo that just isn't all that, before you sell it, you may want to give Don a call. My load-in just got a lot lighter & easier.

THANKS DON!

I'll try to post pix. Every-time I've tried in the past, I've not had any luck.

I've got a pair coming. A verticle 2x12" + 2x6" config and a 2x10" + 6" to stack on top. No tweets. They're being built, can't wait to get my mitts on them. They're gonna kill with my DB750.....
Oooh. I'm very curious to see this and get the specs. I was thinking about ordering something similar.

Don over at Low Down Sound called me last night, the cabs should ship first of next week. He built the 2x10" + 6" as a light weight cab even though it will have ceramic drivers. He's figuring 10-12 lbs. less weight. He delivers everything as promised and then some. Really looking foward to gigging with them. I'll post pix.

Update: Cabs shipped yesterday and today. 4 /12 weeks from inception to delivery. and the 2x12" is a cusom design one off. How do you beat that? If the Fedex gods are kind I'll have them in time to gig with this weekend. I'm stoked, Don delivers!

Don, and service:

My 2x12+2x6 cab had one of the 12's fail: Way out of warranty period...bummer.

I called Don, ordered a new DeltaliteII2512. It showed up, dropped it in: it wasn't dead, but it sounded ugly. Spent a few minutes chasing potential grill/handle rattles, finally pulled the speaker, put it on the floor, connected it with test leads: still sounded bad.

Called Don, who dropped another new speaker the next day. It showed up fine.

Great guy, great service.

I'm getting interested in ordering a 1x12 w/tweet that can handle 500 watts and is a one hand carry. There is one photo on his site, but, so far , no answer to my email about specs, etc. Anybody in the club have a 1x12 like this? If so, would appreciate any comments.

I have one. I replaced my Eden 210XST with this bad boy. I don't know the exact dimensions but it weighs around 40 lbs (not a neo). You can tell it's small by comparing it to the size of my Eden WT405.

That cab is a 500 watt single 12 non neo. Not sure about the weight but its pretty light.

This project came out SO good I placed an order for another cab today. This one is gonna be a bit interesting. Its an 8X8 with tweet but the top two 8's will be crossed and slightly tilted up along with the tweet.

It will be a three-way cabinet when done. It should sound pretty good!!!

That sounds pretty interesting -- I look forward to seeing pics and hearing what you think of it.

It sounds like the top two 8s are being used as midrange drivers... Are they a different model of driver from the other six?

I'm not 100% sure on all of the specs yet. Don is calling me on Friday to discuss what he comes up with. Other than it being a three-way with the top two 8's being angled up with the tweeter, that's about all I know right now. Oh, and it should be a 4 ohm box.

I'll post more as I get more info and PIX & review as soon as I get the cab. I'm pretty busy in May & June playing in different sized rooms so it will be a good test for the cabinet.

I'll just have to figure-out what amp to use with the cabinet. I'll most likely start with one to break it in and try to get somewhat of a baseline and then switch and see what I see.

Starting-off with a DB-750, so fingers crossed...:hyper:

Best way to get him is to call him. E-mail sometimes gets delayed on his side and he has a pretty fixed schedule in his shop. One thing with Don, if he takes your name and number and says that he'll call you back, he WILL call you back!

Don's # is - 313-205-0354

Saves you the trouble of finding it...

He did answer my email and we are batting around some ideas. It's hard for me to call during the day, but email is a breeze.

Sorry man I have no idea. I bought it last summer before they closed. Don had this 12 inch cube underneath a 10 inch (same size but much heavier). The photo I posted just doesn't give it justice. It has one 1/4 inch & a speakon output. There is a handle on the left side (if you are looking at the picture) thats very sturdy and makes it very easy to carry.
