Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

I went to his site yesterday and the homepage was hacked but any of the other pages seemed to work fine. I emailed him about building a cab and have yet to hear back from him. About how much time does it take to get a cab from him/average building time?

I don't think he's responded to e-mails yet today. He told me the wait period was 4 weeks. I paid my deposit on June 8th, and Don told me yesterday my cab was "on tap" for the end of next week.

So, you both like the 3015LF, correct? Which 6" speaker do you prefer in that cab? Is cost comparable to a 210? I've sent an e-mail to Don inquiring about the 15/6 config.

Now, I play mostly fingerstyle Rock with some Blues, Slap, Funk, and R&B thrown in. The Rock we play ranges from older Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Skynyrd to more modern music like Incubus, Finger Eleven, and Theory of a Deadman. I play both 4 and 5-string. My amp puts out 350 watts @ 4 ohms (and 500 watts @ 2 ohms). Do you feel the 15/6 would be a good choice for me? Any thoughts about a 12/6 using a 3012LF?

Hey man, I just saw the amp you're using.

Given the fEarful style cabinet is 8 ohms (there are no 4 ohm 3015LFs from what I can tell) you may not get the full use out of a 3015LF.

However, you will be able to push it hard enough to get it as loud as a pair of 10s, and especially with the B-string, you will notice a difference.

Alex lists the impedance of his similar cab at 6 ohms. I assume that relatively large mid driver acts more like another driver versus a tweeter (which doesn't impact the impedance)? Not sure about that.

So, the cab can't be wired to be 4 ohms? Bummer. :crying:

You've got me. I believe Alex has done an awful lot in crossover design, more than almost anyone else with this style of cab, so he'd know best I think.

I asked Don about this a week or so ago because I was confused at the 8 ohm rating for the cab. He said the mid did not affect it since it was not handling any low freqs.

One reason this config is so great is that both the 3015LF and the 18 Sound 6 mid driver are both super efficient and pretty much do everything better than other drivers. I think the 3012LF is about 3db less efficient. So an 8ohm 15-6 cab with these drivers eats most everything else up and makes good use of most amps.

For practical intent the 3012LF is 5 dB less sensitive than the 3015LF. So for those with lesser wattage the 15/6 is a better way to go by far, or two 12/6 (or a 1212/6) - which then also gives you a 4-ohm nominal load.

I'm using Firefox on a Mac, it had a "warning bar" show up at the top of the Firefox window saying it the website needed a plugin to show properly. Firefox didn't recognize the plugin and I didn't install it, but it had a Real Audio sounding name. I should have taken a screen shot...

If anyone knows his phone number, he should get his host to take it down pronto. I've always gone to his site to get the number but now...

=wr=

Edit >> May not be anything. The hacker's code is terrible but he is trying to link in this: http://www.ozq8.com/song-9531.ram which may just be a song. Color me paranoid...

I called Don this mourning about the site. He said he would call his tech guy to fix it. Said he's been busier then ever. Good to hear. He was raving about the new eminence 450 watt 12".

I'm officially changing my order to the 15/6 cab using the 3015LF and 6ND410. I'll likely get it without a tweeter/horn.

As for the crossover, I heard Don uses a custom 2-way crossover around 600Hz. Is that correct? A forumite on another site was concerned Don might just use a high pass crossover at 1.6kHz and suggested a 2-way crossover at 800 Hz instead. If he uses the custom 2-way crossover, then I won't need to special order a crossover. Anyway, I'm sure I'll hear back from Don soon...

I'd really like to know. Maybe I should call him. Anyway, that's a good NAMED crossover point for those two drivers, done right. The reality is, if done right, named crossover points are kind of a simplicity for what is actually going on though.

That would totally creep me out. Would waste the midrange driver and sound like crap too.

Hey, about letting us know when you find out? ; }

Don just called me up and said he'll have a few of these ready for me to check out on Tuesday. So, I'll head over with bass, head and camera!

Ralph Patterson does Don's crossovers (at least I think he still does), and he pretty much knows what he's doing. I'll ask Don what the deal is on crossovers next week.

I'm looking forward to hearing one (or more) of these cabs!
