But what seem like trifling details to some could make big changes. Some just see bigger box, and two drivers of different sizes.
Here's a somewhat relevant example. Someone might think why not get that cheap midrange driver with the closed back? It's the same diameter, after all - and then I wouldn't have to build a midrange chamber. But that gives you a midrange driver whose frequency response exhibits a multitude of peaks and valleys, with back-waves reflecting off that very close sealed-basket back and into the cone. Does NOT sound very good. And it's not nearly as sensitive/efficient either.
The other thing is that the midrange chamber design actually improves the ridgidity and damping of the baffle, which really improves the general sound especially when driven with big wattage, and incorporates a girdle brace that does the same for side and back panels.
Those incredibly small-chambered closed back drivers can be an upgrade retrofit for some cabs, but they are generally a backward step for anything that is built from scratch.
