Smoother meaning generally that higher tuning pushes a hump into the low mid/high bass region and a steeper low end rolloff (that is: sensitivity falls off rapidly under X hz). So lower tuning means less low mid/upper bass hump and smoother rolloff curve, which means both less volume down low and a less obvious immediate drop in low end too.
If you graph your cabinet with the two different tunings and overlay them you should see what I mean. It's usually a matter of trading 1-2db around the tuning frequency or so for a higher F3/F6, from what my modeling has shown anyway.
Thanks for the explanation. That makes perfect sense. I was worried I wouldn't have that low mid thickness and growl that I love, but after hearing Ken's soundclip that couldn't be further from the truth.
Hey Ryan! You are going to be VERY happy. Here's a few pictures (one with Don and the cab, one with the cover off so you can see the driver, and one with the Markbass F500 on top). The clip was made using my Sadowsky Vintage with Sadowsky singles and well worn in Sadowsky Blue Label steels.
This cab is a wonderful combination (to my ear) of old school and modern articulation.

Awesome! Thanks for the pics, the cab looks exactly like the picture in my head. Very much along the lines of the Aguilar DB series aesthetic.
I just listened to the clip and all I can say is wow. Even though I prefer a mellower head and bass, that sounded fantastic! Fat, thick, growly, warm, articulate, organic, and a little bit of grind. I'm really excited to try this out with my LH500!
I was a little afraid that the cab wasn't going to be great because I designed it, but I am really excited that you dig it. Since I'm strictly fingerstyle and pickstyle, I didn't want a tweeter but I was concerned that it was going to be too dark. But man, that top end sounds really vintagey and grindy. I imagine you would need a tweeter because you slap and dig a little more sizzle and sheen in your fingerstyle tone.
I am tellin ya that cabinet is the wave of the micro future

30lbs for all that tone and volume is insane. Stick a tweeter in there and almost anyone would be happy.
+1, it is truly an awesome design.
I wish I would have had it here to A/B, but my 115L+ stays in a different location. From non-direct A/Bing, they both sound great in their own way, with the Schroe tighter and a bit more aggressive, and also with a tweeter, a bit more extended up top, and the LDS with that wonderful Eminence driver being fatter down low and a bit more 'growly' than the more 'grindy' mid voiced Schroe. Both sound great to me in their own way.
I'm very happy for Ryan, since we've PM'd a bit and I feel I have a handle on the 'tone in his head', and MAN does this cab do it... big down low, organic, warm, but with some nice upper mid grind that sounds very musical. My clip didn't do it total justice, but the tone is at least close to what that cab can do.
K
Thanks Ken, I think this will nail the tone in my head. With the LH500 and this cab, I don't think I will need another rig for many years. Your description sounds exactly like what I'm looking for in that I like "fat and growly" more than "tight and grindy". But, the inherent grind of your Sadowsky came through beautiful. The upper mid and treble response from what I hear is really natural, but present sounding.
Is this cab basically a TL606 with a 3015 driver in it?
Very similar, in fact they both have 3.2 cubic feet internal volume. But, this cab is a whole lot lighter.
There is a bit of the M6 voicing in the F1/F500 (bright, aggressive, quick and clean). I REALLY like the sound of this cab... maybe more than the bigger 15/6 to my ear, since I kind of like that 'upper mid grind' that comes from the top end of that full range 15, versus the more 'studio monitor pure' response of that mid driver crossed over at 800hz or whatever. Pure personal taste there, but I think I'll be getting one of these with a nice quality tweeter in it!
+1, I definitely like the sound of the upper mids and highs coming out of the top end of a tweeterless cab.
+1 That would be a cool form factor. Very impressive. Quite frankly, I was expecting to 'respect it but not dig it', since I'm definitely a '2 way multiple 10 guy' from way back. However, from the first note, I was pretty blown away. I like that bit of aggressive grind (of course, much of that is coming from the very aggressive instrument I happened to use), but that cab definitely had the 'organic grunt' happening. Really nice!
Honestly, I was expecting you to say it sounds good, but its not for me. "Organic grunt" is exactly what I heard in that clip. Since I play pickstyle quite often, I think that is going to compliment the pickstyle J bass tone I use frequently.
The LG would be WAY more old school and mellow out of that cab, but my guess is it would still 'growl' nicely. Very impressive voicing to my ear. That F500/F1 is just scary good sounding with a J bass IMO!
That's what I'm expecting too out of my passive '60s style alder/RW J bass. I hope my new SX fretless P bass sounds good too. It has a lot of "mwah" acoustically so I think that will come through beautifully through my rig.
+1 Spray on covering with locking corners and metal grill... one with tweeter, one without. That would be a killer, cost effective stack. I might have to go there someday!
I'm not sure of the dimensions. I assume Ryan will post up when the cab arrives. It is nice and light, that's for sure.
Don said 24" x 20" x 16".
