Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

For the tv show, meh, I was like maybe 30% master and 60% gain? In the unattenuated input though.

For my last show at the bar I used my 1001 RB II since my Iamp is on its way back to NJ for a tuneup, and I have to be frank the 460w of the GK is a lot, lot louder to the ears than the 500w @ 8 of the iamp ;) I had that thing at 2 o'clock gain, noon boost and master with the input stage unattenuated and it was crushingly loud.

My cabinet is done! I spoke on the phone with Don yesterday about a few finals details. So, it should be ready to be shipped out next week.

It is a tweeterless 1x15" cabinet loaded with an Eminence Kappalite 3015 (non-LF). The design is very similar to a TL606, but the internal volume is slightly smaller (3.0 instead of 3.2) and the cabinet is much lighter (26-28 lbs according to Don!:D:hyper:). I wanted a vintage looking cabinet, so the cab will be covered in black tolex, with a vintage fender grey grill cloth and metal corners.

Hey Ryan,

Can you post a new review thread when you get this cab and test it out? There have been a ton of folks asking for a "mini cab" solution lately who need some education on the 3015 ;)

I think you'll like that a lot.
I had two Mesa Diesel 115's, reloaded with 3015's...they're very TL606 in design.
They sounded nice and vintage, with a little more everything than the stock EV drivers.

They were much heavier than yours;)

Yeah I'm really excited for this cabinet paired with my new Hartke LH500. I think it should be a great "updated vintage" or "new vintage" rig and tone.
That cab with a tweeter should seriously become a staple of the ultralight community so fast. Two of those would be nearly as loud as an Ampeg 8x10 :)
+1, for those who like a sizzly high end for slapping a tweeter would be necessary. But, I am mostly fingerstyle and pickstyle, so I think this cab will have just the right amount of highs for me.

Sure thing!

I'll be ordering a 6x10 from Don in a couple of weeks. Sealed, and no tweeter! Kind of a sport model SVT. I spoke to him a couple of days ago,and I have no doubt he'll come through. I got a lot of responses from my other thread about Dons work, and that pretty much sealed the deal. Can't wait!

3015 and 3015LF: done right, the 3015LF has a easily perceptible impact on the low end, especially in mixes. Neither is boomy. 3015 is what I'd choose if I never played below standard four-string tuning with the occasional drop D and wanted the shave space. For lower tunings 3015LF is definitely the way to go, and for dub/reggae even with 4-string tunings it sounds deeper and louder since it's more in line with dub/reggae voicing.

I just got off the phone with Don. The cab is finished, tested, and ready to ship. I sent my PayPal payment today so I will ship out tomorrow.

Don predicted that the cab would weight 26-28 lbs, but it actually weights 30 lbs. I'm not the least bit unhappy though considering the volume that this single one-way cab will generate. The tuning is 48 Hz, and the internal volume is 3.2 cubic feet. I was hoping for 55 Hz and 3.0 cubic feet, but I think it will still sound awesome. Anyone have any insight on this? Don said it sounds great but will need a little time to break in.

I'd be shocked if you're anything less than thrilled. The tuning of 3015's is debatable but I think you'll notice the low end being a little smoother with the 48hz tuning but it'll be pretty minor either way. Try modeling it in WINISD :)

I just talked to Don. We haven't hung in a while, so I think he might bring your cab over today for a quick 'sound check' prior to boxing up. Man, 30 pounds for a high quality 115 cab is pretty amazing. I'll post up a picture if it happens.

Smoother meaning less mid/high bass?

Smoother meaning generally that higher tuning pushes a hump into the low mid/high bass region and a steeper low end rolloff (that is: sensitivity falls off rapidly under X hz). So lower tuning means less low mid/upper bass hump and smoother rolloff curve, which means both less volume down low and a less obvious immediate drop in low end too.

If you graph your cabinet with the two different tunings and overlay them you should see what I mean. It's usually a matter of trading 1-2db around the tuning frequency or so for a higher F3/F6, from what my modeling has shown anyway.

Hey if you don't mind me asking, how much $$$ did he qoute it for?

Hey Ryan! You are going to be VERY happy. Here's a few pictures (one with Don and the cab, one with the cover off so you can see the driver, and one with the Markbass F500 on top). The clip was made using my Sadowsky Vintage with Sadowsky singles and well worn in Sadowsky Blue Label steels.

This cab is a wonderful combination (to my ear) of old school and modern articulation.

Hey Ken, how does this cab sound vs the Schro 15+L?

I wish I would have had it here to A/B, but my 115L+ stays in a different location. From non-direct A/Bing, they both sound great in their own way, with the Schroe tighter and a bit more aggressive, and also with a tweeter, a bit more extended up top, and the LDS with that wonderful Eminence driver being fatter down low and a bit more 'growly' than the more 'grindy' mid voiced Schroe. Both sound great to me in their own way.

I'm very happy for Ryan, since we've PM'd a bit and I feel I have a handle on the 'tone in his head', and MAN does this cab do it... big down low, organic, warm, but with some nice upper mid grind that sounds very musical. My clip didn't do it total justice, but the tone is at least close to what that cab can do.
