Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

Here's another cool cab(s) from Don. These cabs are for 'Ben', and are two way 15 with tweeter (Faital Neo 15 and a super duper Selenium tweeter). The grill is off the bottom so you can see the driver and the horn.

The design is unique... two separate cabs, with a 'stand alone' airhead design that can be latched to an identical second cab to create a 'tilt and roll' stack. Don will be installing rub rails on the lower cab before he ships.

These things sound huge... deep, punchy, and lots of sizzle up top if you want it.

Yep, that's me. Looking forward to seeing these things in person. I got a hold of some "Acoustone" grille cloth that is supposed to not impede sound transmission but looks like the old Fender salt and pepper. Think I will put it on when they get here and maybe I will post some pics of it all put together with my rig. Thanks for posting these pics.

Killer cabs. The locking mechanism seems to work great, and the tone is VERY good... even, fat, full, punchy. That's one heck of a 15" driver, and Don says those tweeters are completely top shelf.

I feel lucky to be able to check some of these cabs out, and it allows Don to give them a good checking over and listening test prior to shipping to make sure everything is perfect.

Very cool setup. Congrats.

As for me, I finished spec'ing out my cab with Don. 15/6 very similar to rpsands but with inset metal handles rather than spring loaded ones and a tweeter added. High passed so the 6.5" can run full range and with an on/off switch for when I don't want that sparkly top end. I was going to use the Quantum Shield (not done in house) but Don said his own in-house duratex finish may be ready when my cab is so I may go that route. We'll see.

I also just finished spec'ing out my 2x12 fearful build, should be pretty awesome!

I'm excited to check that out when it is finished. I think that will be the next cab Don will be bringing over in a few weeks or so.

In the meantime, he just popped by for a second with this VERY nice three way 110 cab (mid driver and tweeter). It is a non-neo 110 (Don really likes this particular driver... forgot what it was, but it had a lot of balls for a 110). Of course, this little cab won't knock a wall down, but with the tweeter at around 9 o'clock and the mid driver at noon, it was very even, and bright in a good way, with plenty of low end for small gigs.

That's a slick looking beast :)

It's kind of cool how the finish (tolex, spray on), grill (Fender type, Ampeg type, metal), hardware (chrome versus black plastic), etc. really changes the look and vibe of these cabs.

It's a nice looking and sounding little box. Not featherweight, but nice low end extension and very pure up top. Don says he has built a 112 one way cab in the identical size box to go with this particular build, and that it is a pretty potent stack with aroiund 500 watts pumping into it.

Yeah, I hope he brings it by you so you and I can hear the same cab. I always appreciate your reviews but don't have any experience with most of them - this will only be my fourth cab that I've owned.
Just be sure to take pics ;)

He said that wait time is about a 5 weeks right now, but he's catching up so that it should be a month or less by the time he gets started on mine.

Your spec is what I have my eye on. Don is pretty psyched about it also!

Now that's the kind of cab I would be interested in. How would you compare it to some of the other 110's you have played? Any chance you remember the dimensions?

Greetings,

That 3 way 1-10 box is mine. The 10 is a non - neo Eminence 10 - I figured the box is small so heavy could it be ? :) . I had a few converstions with Don about my need for a small box for small gigs going from singer songwriter type things to low volume jazz and funk gigs, mostly trio or quartet things. I haven't been completely happy with anything I've tried so I figured I'd give Don's boxes a try. If this one works out I'll probably get another of the same or try the 12 inch sub-type box he mentioned. Don was great to work with and from the pic it looks like he nailed it. I'll post my impressions of it after a few gigs if anyone is interested.

It's a really nice box. He was going to put the rubber feet on, and I think a nice tilt back stand mechanism (I think, can't remember), and then ship it out. Post up a review! I only spent a minute with it, but it sounded really good... full, but plenty of punch and brightness and sizzle also if you want it. I liked it with the mid at noon and the tweeter at about 9 o'clock... very articulate and even to my ear. The weight was fine. As you said, the cab is small enough that the extra 5 pounds for the ceramic driver is really no big deal.

That cab looks like an Eminence Bp102. I'd expect the cab to be pretty similar to an Acme B1 although probably not quite as much low end extension.

+1... not as much deep low end, but MUCH more mid punch and MUCH MUCH MUCH more mid punch and top end if you want it than the Acme. Of course, you can dial that all back very easily with the dual attenuators. Another nice touch... larger attenuator knob for the mid driver, smaller for the tweeter so you can easily feel the difference when making quick adjustments.

I'll let the owner respond to these questions in detail, since I only spent a few minutes with it. I will say that it is a touch larger than other 110's I've played (deeper depth and of course a bit larger all around to accomodate the mid driver), and it sounds that way... fuller, bigger, and quite high SPL. It didn't have that 'compressed, choked' sound that I hear with some small 110's. Of course, it won't do nearly the low end extension of the Acme 110, but, even without a direct A/B, I'm pretty sure it will get quite a bit louder, with plenty of usable low end.

The cool thing is that if the owner needs more low end oomph, the mid driver and tweeter are MORE than powerful enough to sound balanced with the addition of a 112 one way extension cab that Don said could be the exact same size, making a very nice looking modular rig. I'm convinced that would be massively killer!

Hi,

I'll post my thoughts after the cabinet arrives and I get a few gigs under my belt with it. My plan is to see if this cabinet gives me what I'm looking for and either get another of the same or maybe go with the single 12 sub box. I'm playing a bunch of varied musical situations so I'll be able to see where this excels.

Cool. Post up after a few gigs! I think you will find that there is SO much power in that mid driver and tweeter that the most you would need is more ooomph down low with that single 12. That will be less expensive also!

Is anyone having Don work up a tall, vertical 212+mid cab? Maybe with the mid driver above the two twelves?

That is the next cab that Don said he is bringing over for pictures and a 'pre shipping test'. I believe he has a two way and a three way in the works, both using those 112LF drivers or whatever they are called, with the 18Sound mid driver.

I believe he said he will have the first one ready to go in about two weeks.

Stay tuned!
