Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

i'd love to get a number! I've been rockin an LDS sealed/tweeterless 610 for about a year and a half now. Great cab: cracks skulls and ruptures guts in the smoothest way possible. I got it in black tolex with the '70s turquoise and silver cloth, and after some mild confusion about where the LDS logo should go on my cab, it seems Don elected not to include it! Doesn't really bother me, but I feel bad whenever someone in the audience is blown away and doesn't know what company to google. Not that I'm shy about sharing, but they have to come and ask me first!

Anyway. I'm too lazy to ever do real photo sessions, so all I end up with are 'action' shots. This pic captures my band in the throes of an "In the Ghetto/Suspicious Minds" medley, while a packed house stomped along. The LDS in question takes up the bottom right corner. Can I get a # please?

That's the same configuration I have. What drivers did you go with?

I got my 6x10 from Don a few weeks ago,and unfortunately, haven't had a chance to really dig into it like I want to. The build quality is exellent, but the tone is not exactly what I was hoping.I was going for an SVT in a smaller package. The cab as is pretty harsh in the upper mids, and just using the timbre and enhance knobs on my Thunderfunk,I can't get the tone I wanted out of it.To get in the ballpark,I have to max out the enhance, and cut around 3k quite a bit. Don said he put Eminence Beta's in it,but I figured he would use the Legend 102s as they are recommended as replacements for Ampeg cabinets. The cab is going to rehearsal tonight so I can hear it in a band setting, and that will be the deciding factor as to swapping out the drivers. I'm calling Don this afternoon and see what he recommends.I'll keep you posted.

I'm not sure why you would be annoyed at having to use eq to get the cab to sound the way you want but that aside, for a cab with this many drivers: Neos!

Ch2010s and CA2010s both look like a pretty good replacement for the B102s in a sealed box (I'd go with the CH for more sensitivity I think). Don may also have some other brand neo 10s you could roll with so see what he's got :)

I don't think B102s are really ideal for a small sealed box.

...actually... I don't know. I told Don what I was going for, and trusted him to build something that worked. I'm pretty sure they're eminence something or other's but i don't really know much about drivers or the differences between them. Admittedly when i got the cab it threw me for a loop at first. I was used to playing a GK 410RBH, which had a completely different character. At first it was just such a huge change in tone that it seemed like something was wrong with it, but I realized that its just a much darker sounding cab than the more modern GK. As soon as stopped being afraid of some heavy duty boosting in certain frequencies I started getting a much better tone.

Interestingly enough, the other day i did a mix n match gear swap with another dude at a gig, and he had a beat-up Ampeg fridge and an SVT II (non-pro). I took a look at his EQ settings and they were pretty similar to how i EQ my Ashdown to run thru my sealed 610... both did quite a bit of boosting, especially in the highs and hi-mids.

EDIT: I do know my drivers aren't neos, if that makes a difference. I had the option, but for a fleeting moment the reality of living with a heavy heavy (115-120lbs) cab seemed a lot less troublesome than it actually is. Although to put it in perspective, dealing with my cab seemed like a breeze compared to what that other bassist had to deal with with his 8x10. Thankfully Don builds these things on the compact side.

Yeah the 212/6/1 is definitely mine, I can't wait to hear your impression of it KJung. I went with the 212/6/1 rather than 15 for the same reason, Im a steel rounds guy and I wanted to get the most out of my Shuttle Max amp at the moment.

OK, just got finished doing a pretty good trial of your cab, with the Sadowsky, the TecAmp Puma500, the Markbass F1 and the Markbass LMII.

First, WONDERFUL cab... it's a big 212, but it sounds like a big 212. Here it is with my TecAmp212 next to it for size comparison (the TecAmp 212 is the absolute smallest enclosure that 212s will fit into).

The specs. Two Eminence 3012LF's, 18sound mid driver, and Selenium tweeter. Crossover.... 800hz for the mid and 4.5K for the tweeter, both with attenuators. Don's wonderful spray on covering and 'modern' metal grill. Here's the general weight spec's of these cabs from Don:

- 212 two way with Tolex....55 pounds
- 212 three way with Tolex/cloth grill.... 60 pounds
- 212 two way with spray on covering/metal grill..... 62
- 212 three way with spray on/metal grill..... 66 pounds

The weights are approximate. So, the current cab comes in around 70 (given it has heavy duty handles and 3" built in wheels), but feels quite a bit lighter due to the 'thin/tall' design.

Here is a picture of the whole rig that we used to give it a good run through... Tecamp Puma500 (these amps just SING with these type of cabs.... 15/6, 12/6 etc.), and the NYC Sadowsky ash/maple vintage with single coils and Blue Label stainless steel strings.

The cab EASILY puts out the low end and volume and force of a good 410. The voicing is deep, and it gave NOTHING up when slapped... no compressing, no distortion at all. This cab goes WAY lower than my little Tecamp cab, and the overall SPL was noticably louder.

I'll upload a clip in the next post with the Puma, with the mid driver at 2 o'clock (higher than I typically have it with the 15/6... I assume that is the impact of the two 112's at 4ohms versus the single 15 at 8ohms), and the tweeter 'just on' at around 9 o'clock (it is a very powerful tweeter circuit). As you can hear (I hope)... smooth, deep, but articulate with plenty of smooth mid presence and all the sizzle anyone would want. It sounds great with the tweeter dialed all the way down if you want it more old school and smooth.

How's it sound with that F1 head?

A, I forgot to post about that. It is much more punchy and grindy than the very smooth Puma. It sounded good... louder, punchier, tighter down low and a bit grindier than the very smooth Puma. The LMII sat right in the middle of the two and REALLY sounded good.

This cab is neutral enough to my ear that it would be hard to find a head that would not sound decent, especially with the extra control you get from the attenuators on the mid and tweeter.

However, there is something a bit magical about that fat, smooth voicing of the Puma and these two and three way cabs with mid drivers. Don agrees!

Very cool. I'm falling mor and more in love with the F1 head, as I now use it for a Neox 212T, 4 ohm cab. Incredibly loud!

Here is the clip of the cab with the Puma and Sadowsky....

You say you like an aggressive upper mid but I'm hearing good round warm bass tone. The clips are probably not indicative of the low end fundamental these speaker combos are capable of.

Were you able to do a direct a/b comparison of the LDS212 and the Tech212?

You think a cab is putting out serious low end until you put it up against a cab with the new KLLF's. After just a few notes it becomes obvious that the KLLF's competition is but a mere mid cab imo.

Yes... the LDS is going WAY lower than the TecAmp cab (it should with those LF speakers and the much larger box. Killer, and IMO all the low end anyone would want. It isn't that super deep extension of the Acme's, which I hate personally, but a good solid 45hz or whatever (with what sounds like a nice gentle roll-off below that...so very full and deep even on the open B compared to the TecAmp or Berg cab) that sounds nice and full and round and deep, BUT which punches and hits you in the chest also.

And yes, the tone of all these 'LF with mid driver' cabs is 'smooth' in the mids to my ear, and nothing like the grind you get from the top end of a more traditional 12 or 10 (like the TecAmp, the BergAE410, etc.). This design, and this particular execution goes lower and seems to eliminate all break-up and distortion in the upper mids, due to the crossover and that very pure mid driver handling everything above 800hz, in this case.

My preference is for a more traditional 410 type cab, with full range drivers and that bit of grind up top, and a low end that is tuned a touch higher. However, pure personal taste there. This smooth, full, even, pure, fat tone is hard to not like, and I can see this working for many players. IMO!

K

PS And yes, my little Edirol recorder with its internal mics does compress the low end a bit, but I can sure hear that deep bass through my reasonable good computer system.

A note: the older Tech 212 is much smaller. Even smaller than the Schroeder 212, which is also smaller.

+1 I should have clarified... the TecAmp s212 is the smallest box (width and height) that two front mounted in-line 12's can fit into. It's a GREAT little cab, but of course, doesn't put out the deep low end and absolute wump of the Greenboy type design.

Great clip - it sounds awesome.

Thanks! It is a real treat for me to get to try some of these cabs. I enjoy it, and Don likes it because he can kind of stand back and really listen, check for any rattles or whatever, and hear the cab with a few different heads and basses.

This is a NICE one IMO. It sounds quite similar to the 12/6 I reviewed a while back in this thread, but with more deep low end extension and much higher SPL. Nice designs for those that want it very wide, smooth and accurate.

I just listened to the clip, sounds excellent. Thanks alot KJung. Makes me wish I had a Sadowsky :P

Thanks for allowing me to try it:bassist:. I might be getting one of these. My little recorder doesn't do the low end justice. It really slams, and it sounded good with every head we tried it with (TC RH450, LMII, F1, and the wonderful Puma500, which continues to be my and Don's favorite with these particular box designs).

Enjoy... post up when you get it. I think Don said he was shipping this afternoon, but not sure.
