Low Down Sound Club, Part Four

Alright guys, here goes.
I've been lurking, reading, etc for a while now, and a couple days ago had a quick 20 minute conversation with Don.
What I've been contemplating for a while is a two part system.
Part one would be a 12/6 (3012LF/Faital), 3 or 4spc airhead "combo", 21.5" wide, H & D tbd. Got a verbal quote already on that build.
Part two might be a 212 vertical (3012HO), one way, same width As Part 1.
Both with Wine tolex, and something like Mesa Cream & Black jute cloth.
Both with pull out carryalong handles/casters, side handles, chrome corner caps.
Each cab would be run from a yet to be purchased pre/power rack setup, each side of poweramp feeding one cab.
This is all pretty far in the future, but I wanted to get a bit of input from the crowd here if possible.

Fyi...the airhead cab would be the main practice and pick up and go solution, and the 212 would be used for the occasional times I need to really put out serious volume.
Primarily rock and metal.
I've attached a mockup i made of what I've been thinking of.

Why would you want to combine a 3012LF with a pair of 3012HOs?

My impression (incorrect?) has been that the HOs are more full range, and as this would be a sort of giant sub, shouldn't need a mid or horn. Plus with the 12/6 airhead stacked on top, the LF and mid driver would be most of what i hear anway.
Am I way off on these assumptions?

The HOs are more full-range, yes. Not the full-est of full-range , but still, pretty full-range. No, it/they don't need a high frequency & certainly not a mid. How, though, do you arrive at this 212 being a giant sub? The LF is a sub. It's designed to be a sub. I, personally, would prefer two 212s with the HOs & a high frequency, but it sounds like you may be happier with two 12/6s. Or perhaps even just a single 12/6 & a 3012LF 112 on the bottom. If you go 12/6 & 112, though, you may want to do an 18Sound 6ND410 mid on the 2-way. It's a more potent mid & would likely handle two 3012LFs better. However, it may be more difficult/time consuming to unload the single LF 112 if/when it comes to it. You may end up needing to sell both boxes as a set. A very, very nice set , but a set nevertheless .

How bout a two way 12/6 airhead, and a two way 12/6, both with LFs and those 18sound mids, with a defeat switch for the mid on the "cab only" cab?

That'd work just fine if that's how you decide you want to go. I really like mids & I also really like the 6ND410. Some aren't so crazy about it, though, say it gets a little harsh. Not my experience. Anyway, my point here is that if you want mids in both boxes, you might prefer the Eminence Alphas. They're also a lot fewer bux. Also, as mentioned, the 18Sound is a powerful son-of-a-gun. Perhaps, perhaps a little overpowering for the 3012LF. Just something to think about, that's all.

Don't think with a 12/6 you really want a mid defeat switch. Without the mid, a 3012LF-only cab would be pretty darned muddy. Sorry, don't understand what you mean by "cab only" cab. It'd be a different story if the cab was a 2-way, 3012HO & high freq. Defeating the high freq, you'd still have a full-range cabinet with a very useable freq range.

As for an airhead, if you like it/want it, fine. Your bread. Just again, keep in mind, it makes it harder to move if/when you decide to.

Say I were to duplicate Chef's setup, without the "airhead", but still at 21-22" wide, to match a rack case width.
I'd probably ask Don if he could make a matching rack case. (wine tolex)
Any idea if he has done this in the past?

By "cab only", I simply meant the one that wasn't an airhead, that's all.

That'll work, too. Obviously. In that scenario, for use with two 3012LFs, I'd go with the 6ND410 mid. Add a high frequency to make it a 12/6/1 if you like. Whatever dimensions you want, fine. Like the rack case idea. Don't remember anyone mentioning Don doing this, but doesn't mean he can't. Doesn't sound too tough, actually. Ask him.

I've searched around a bit but couldn't find any discussion on it - I have a lovely LDS 15/6 and I will get a second cabinet sometime this year to have a full stack & full 4-ohm setup. Should I go for another identical 15/6 or would a 15sub be more appropriate? Would I run into any considerable phasing issues if I decided to put a 15/6/1 on top of my 15/6?

Good questions. I can only pass along what I've gleaned, not being an owner myself. You get opinions on both sides of the issue. From the few comments I've read by those who've owned both configurations, they seem to prefer the sound of the dual 15/6/1 to the 15/6/1 + sub. Makes for a more flexible rig too.

As for phasing issues with a dual 15/6/1 rig, you minimize those by configuring the top cab in mirror image to the bottom cab - so that the tweeters and mid-drivers are as close to one another in the vertical plane as possible. Woofers in the same vertical plane as well, but those can be farther apart (larger waveforms allow for more space without phasing problems becoming a factor).

Here's an example from one of Tom Bowlus' 15/6/1 + 12/6/1 rigs:

I have been thinking A LOT about going down this path. I have an LDS 15/6/1 that is perfect for almost everything I do. However I am thinking I could get away with a 12/6 for many of the jams and smaller things to lighten the schlepp etc. However, I would also like to have the option of pairing them together if I needed/wanted to.

So my question is - does the config above actually work well? (TomBowlus or anyone else?)

Yes, this setup works fantastically well. The only "downside" is that with those cabs, you normally have no real reason to bring more than one. :D
