Low Down Sound Club, Part Four

Think I can say I'm officially now in the LDS club.

Don's just started on my build, a 3015s-loaded 215 w/Selenium D220Ti super tweeter & Selenium HM25-25 90x60 horn. Will incorporate a toggle to switch from a full-range 215 (completely bypassing the crossover & compression driver/horn) to a 2-way. Two voices from one box. This toggle & the L-Pad on the side. Four 4" flared ports. Tuned to 50Hz. Bedecked in Tweed w/Oxblood & Gold Stripe grill cloth. Old-school look. New-fangled performance. Can't wait :hyper: . Feels like Christmas :D .

Oops, forgot, 44" tall x 23 1/2" wide x 16" deep. 7.3 feet3 internal volume. Not sure yet on weight, but guessing in the 80-85 lb. range. Not physically tiny or tremendously light, but for the wallop I'm sure it'll pack & frequency range it'll cover, I think very respectable measurements indeed.

Oh, & working with Don is a true pleasure.

My issue with the 12/6/1+12sub rig continues to be "it's just so polite."

Massive spl, but it just doesn't have that bit of raggedy in the mids that I'm just so used to with traditional paper cone rigs at similar spl....
Bands, sound guys, audience; they all love it.

Just guessing. When completed, it'll be whatever it is. Would rather guess high & be pleasantly surprised. Will have super love for it if it ends up 70 lbs.

Have the 15s (16 lbs.), the super tweeter (4 lbs.) & horn (2 lbs.), recessed steel handles (3 lbs.?), crossover (1 1/2 lbs.?), recessed L-Pad, toggle switch, speakons, & box for the tweet/horn. Then the main box (again, 44 x 23.5 x 16) & interior reinforcement materials.

I gotta figure out how to clean the tweed without ruining it. I am half-way considering finding one of those companies that uses dry ice to blast away mold, but have no idea what something like that might cost

I have an amp that originally came with faux tweed tolex. Someone had ripped it off (and the oxblood grill cloth with it) and spray painted everything flat black. When I bought it, I decided to put the tweed back on it (not realizing that it was fake tweed TOLEX on the original). The radius of the corners, etc., ended up being different (real tweed is MUCH thicker than tolex). But I hosed it down with so much lacquer (and by that I mean Polysomethingorother in a honey pine color) and sanded it down nicely between coats to get rid of deadly thready fliers, that the current covering LOOKS like tweed but is actually something more like truck bedliner in its structural integrity. It's waterproof, beer proof, pretty much ding and tear-proof, and will likely outlast cockroaches after a zombie apocalypse.

Howdy folks. Man have I been out of the thread for a long time! I kinda got out of it when I started jammin' so much I didn't have time to brush my teeth (yuch)! I apologize for all those that may have asked for numbers, I used to keep track, but as I didn't see any requests for quite a long time, I just faded out of it.

I see that Chef has been expanding the thread, +++ on that Chef! Anyway, I have no idea where the numbers left off, and I don't have time to do a post by post search, anyone have a clue? There has been a request!

So I just got this email from Don when asking for his advice on a cab:
Hi Josh, Here's a great idea for you. I would recommend a 12-2x10--with a 6.5" mid. Using a 500 watt ceramic woofer---lots of good deep bass, cross over at 800 hz. to the 150 watt sealed 10's ( punch mids with plenty of power handling--and then to a mid-high 6.5" which goes up to 9 khz. for the smooth ---no hissy---top end. 599.00 dressit up however you like. What do you guys think about this setup? It sounds pretty good to me, but I'm wondering if I should have a two-way crossover to the 6.5" or not, based on what I've read. I think I'd go with the 12" on the bottom next to two of those circular ports with the 2x10" on top, and above those in the middle put the 6.5". Do you think that'd sound good? Sounds good to me, but I'm not an expert on this stuff. I'm trying to get a more even frequency response than my Avatar B212, but without the clankiness of a tweeter.

A custom built cabinet like that for $600 sounds like a bargain!!!

I don't have any LDS cabinets, but I do have a couple AccuGrooves. It's my understanding that AccuGroove used high-pass only crossovers for the Midrange and Tweeters. I'm guessing the results would be quite acceptable.

Will the Midrange have a level control on it?

Not sure. I gave him a clip of another bassist with similar tonal ideas as me (Paul Hinojos) and that's what he sent me back. It sounds like from his email that he's crossing over from the 12" to the 10" speakers, which is definitely a good idea, but it seems like I should also have a crossover point for the 6.5" as well to make it sound good. I'm going to call him sometime this week to get all the details worked out. Just posting on here to see if anybody has any experience with a 12-2x10-6.5 and/or if I should ask for a two-way crossover instead of just one before I go and order this thing. I am glad that he agrees with me on the no tweeteriness.

It did sound pretty darn high to me too. Thanks for confirming that for me. They'd barely even be used crossed over that high. Perhaps I just misread his email and the mid is being crossed over at 800Hz. That sounds a bit more likely. I'm wondering if the 10's aren't crossed over if it'll cause all those interference problems I read about in the plethora of TB threads talking about mixing driver sizes
