I have lots of respect for Don. I mean tons. He builds only top notch stuff w/super fit & finish for nicely reasonable coin. Have to say, though, that I think maybe a 212 w/Eminence Kappa Lite II 2512s would be a better choice. I know you have the Avatar & probably want a change from a 212, but a 212 w/2512s mounted vertically would be a change. The 2512s are full-range neo speakers w/high dB SPL & good xmax (very good displacement, Vd, air movement potential), so you could get by nicely w/only them. Or you could always still add the mid.

Or another option would be to do a much better tweeter/horn than the **** in the Avatar. A Selenium D220Ti high compression driver & either Selenium HC23-25 or HM25-25 horn would work very well.

If you only did a 212, no mid or tweeter/horn, I bet the box could be ~30" tall x 18" wide x 14" deep & ~45 lbs. Add any of the other items & size weight increases, but not really by too much.

Really want long throw? Then a 3015LF 115 or 215 with your choice of mids.

Or also (nicer in other ways, but not as long throw) a 215 w/full-range Eminence 3015s or Faital Pro 15PR400s.

I'm going to wait until Thursday and test it again with the new preamp I just got (Fender TBP-1) before putting any more thought into it. It could just be me not liking the sound of the Shuttle 9.0 going into the Avatar cab, and going with my new rack might make it sound better. I do agree, that a vertical 12" stack would probably please me more, but I also gotta consider whether I should dump another load of cash right now after I just dumped a pretty penny setting up my new rack. Eventually I will upgrade this cab though, and there's a good chance it'll be with an LDS.

O.K., new info introduced.

Taking a step back to re-evaluate before making any relatively large purchase is always a prudent move, even more so if you've just recently made a good-sized similar purchase. And you're right, you might turn out to just love the Avatar w/the TBP-1.

Hope things work out for you one way or another.

After many weeks/months of using other stuff; i dug my two LDS setups out of the cobwebs and fired them up with the M9.
I think I'll be back to using these for a while :)

I just received an LDS 12x6x1 last night. Appears to be a very well made cabinet although I wouldn't have minded slightly smaller and lighter - but it is what I asked for. It has a 3012LF and a Faital mid with standard horn and volume controls for the mid and high drivers. I plan to use it at a jazz rehearsal tonight and take pics sometime soon. BTW, I plan on using my Carvin BX500 to power it.

Did you go W6N8-120 or 6PR150? And something like the APT-80?

I do believe it is the APT-80, but all I know about the mid is that Don suggested the Faital mid for this configuration. I had started with the idea of a fearful, but comparing costs etc. I decided that rather than spending the same (or more) amount of $ & building it myself, that the cabinets offered by Don would meet my needs and would definitely be better made. With one whole practice using the cab., I can say that it sits well in the mix for a quiet trio but I haven't completely figured out how to get my sound out of it quite yet. I left my Carvin set up like I use it with my 2x12 cab (embarassingly, a Dr Bass) and comparing the 2 cabinets, I have it set up better for the 2x12 which also is definitely louder at the same settings. Interestingly enough, the 2 cabinets together sound pretty good (in my few minutes of testing). I am mixing ohms though - 4 ohm 2x12 with an 8 ohm 12x6x1, but then each 12 gets the same amt of juice. The LDS does have better definition though, but adding the 2x12 adds some depth. Of course what I wanted was a cab with the depth & guts of a fearful 15x6 that has the clarity of a Hartke cabinet, the spl of a schroeder, the size & weight of a Crazy8, for under $750 - but such a cab. does not exist.

What I got is an excellent cabinet though and I can now add my voice to those who consider Don a class act who builds quality gear (and gives what appears to be good advice on the components - for the mid I asked for either the 18Sound 6nm410 or an Alphalite 6 - Don suggested the Faital, and I went with his advice.

BlacksHole, if it's a 2-way with just the 12" woofer and 6.5" mid the Faital W6N8-120 is ideal for that application but I think the 6PR150 frequency response is better suited to be crossed over to a tweeter in a 3-way build. I'm assuming this is what you have. If so, the 6PR150 is capable of a bit more output which opens up another option. If you can find your sound and like this cab, have Don build a 3012LF sub like Chef's to sit under that 12x6x1. That will give you a modular 4 ohm stack capable of massive SPL without farting out which will handle about any amp you'd care to pair with it. :eek:

By the way Chef - love your LDS testing station. I bet that rocks! The Mesa M9 or GK MB800 would seem to be ideal for either one of those stacks.
