Fun afternoon for me. Don knew I wanted to try a 15/6/1, and also to get a clip up of one of these cabs (I didn't have my little video recorder when Don brought the first few 15/6's by).

So, here it is (it is actually available for sale and immediate delivery... not sure of the story on it, but it is killer if anyone is interested). 3015LF, 18Sound, Eminence tweeter. I assume this is crossed over at the typical 800hz/3.5K.

The cool thing about the clip (IMO!) is that Don dialed down the tweeter and mid driver in various combinations, so you can really hear what is going on with the separate components.

I used my relatively aggressive Markbass F500 and my very aggressive Ash/maple Alleva-Coppolo LM5 in the clip... sounds very good to me, and as many have said, while these cabs can take a lot of power, you don't need a ton of power to get them wumping, even with the F500 at 8ohms (300 watts).

Dig the beautiful wine tolex (or whatever it is), and the nice kickback stand. Beautiful. Just FYI for those who haven't heard one of these... the tonal footprint comes through very well on the clip if you have good headphones or whatever.

It was a treat for me to get to play one of these!

For every blissninny moment there must be a cosmic counter, and I am reluctantly it. I don't want the chore butttt...
I paid in full for a 1515/66 mid May and Don has been BS'in me since. Don't pay any more than a deposit folks. I was told on the day before Thanksgiving that the shipper would not take my cab Don brought to him as Don has sued the shipper too many times! He said my 2x15 might be the last one he does.It was on his truck and after the shipper refused it Don was gonna reluctantly take it back to his shop. So I e-mailed Don and told him I would pay an upgrade for 2 15/6 cabs, if shipping a 1515/66 was no longer feasable.
No response and now my neighbor is claiming he is gonna get the 15/6/1 Ken posted today after waiting 2 weeks after his initial order! Way to go dude. But LDS sucks IMO no longer humble,as he should have offered it to me per my thansgiving? e-mail. I am dismayed that Don is like every other person with the money up front as he was portrayed otherwise. 2nd request for a refund! For anyone who says repeatedly that Don will happily refund money I say watch your own reputation. 6.5 months and still waiting!

Dude, relax. Sucky afternoon, yes, but have some compassion. The man is dealing with a big move, an ailing family member, and on top of it the normal stress of owning a small business. He's a custom builder of quality cabinets. If you don't like to wait, go to samedaymusic.com. Does he get behind on his orders? Yes, but he does his best to work quickly and get a thoughtful, well-built, exceptionally functioning cab to you. I too waited many months for a cabinet, but he was a gentleman all the way. Great communicator, and he GENUINELY cares about getting what you want right and getting it out to you safely for many years of enjoyment.

I think everyone is aware of what's happening with Don, I don't want to post the full sob story here too but I'm also having problems with Don. He's been very nice over the phone but I have to say that I'm extremely dis-satisfied with his service and the way he's handling my situation(cab showed up with 2 very damaged corners).

I know Don was totally bummed that your cab was damaged in shipping, and I know he was totally bummed at the response of the shipping company. I also know that he's had a couple cabs damaged recently by that company, and is at a bit of loss at finding a better shipping solution for the larger monster cabs. I'm also sure that if you call him and say you don't want the two replacement cabs, he will refund your money with no problem.

I assume the 15/6/1 cab above was not that close to the spec you defined, but can't comment on that.

Bummer on the situation though. Just call Don and get your money refunded and move on to something else. That should be no problem. Unfortunately, in Don's business, if the shipping company screws up, he is still responsible for the customer being happy, and I agree he should quickly make it right if a refund is requested. As far as I know, this has always been the case. If it isn't, you won't see me testing cabs and posting on this thread any more.

That is a bummer about the shipper. I'm assuming that Don was forgoing the usual UPS/Fedex route for that cab. Usually, that means a trucking company where everything is usually shipped, strapped to a pallet, but I don't know the details. Everyone has shipping horror stories to tell, me included. I recently bought fEarful 12/6/1 ( not from Don ), that arrived damaged and unplayable, and had to be shipped back. Luckily I got a refund, but there you have it, #$%@ happens. I'm glad I can pick up my cabs in person !

Yeah, the big cabs require a shipping company, and it seems they have gotten a bit sloppy about strapping the stuff onto the pallets (Don said he used them for years with virtually no issues, and now he has run into a couple back to back:hmm:).

I would hate to be in the cab business myself. I typically won't ship a cab I'm selling used for this reason, and trying to get an insurance payment from a shipper these days is very difficult.

That being said, the manufacturer (in this case Don) or seller is responsible to the end customer. The difficulty with Don's business model is that he doesn't have a replacement cab ready to go for the customer, since all his cabs are custom 'one offs'. So, when one goes down due to shipping issues, the only two options are to get your money back, or wait until a new cab can be built.

mntngrown - CALL, don't email, Don if you want a refund (or to update your specs).
Some people are much better to reach (and respond) by phone than email (and others vice versa). One thing I've learned here is that Don is a phone person.

Good luck.

KJung - thanks for the good wishes. It is indeed a stunning cab, and matches my order down to the larger waveguide and wine tolex. The only difference was that I had ordered a metal grille. Don was very clear that he was swamped with catching up on orders, and wasn't going to modify this cab in any way (and thereby take time away from other builds) - he needed someone who would take it exactly as-is so that he could get back to his backorder. Even making a metal grille and swapping out the grill cloth (3 hrs work) would be a dealbreaker. He's that set on getting his backorders built. I called at the right time, was willing to flex on that one item.

It is a beauty. And, to be fair to the OP with the damaged cab, that is a complex situation and thankfully a rare one. I think as soon as Don gets the final deal on his shipping claim, that will rapidly be taken care of. However, I totally understand the OP being bummed out, and hopefully Don will be able to make it right in at least a somewhat quick manner.

Again, luckily in the dozens and dozens of cabs Don ships, it is relatively rare that one gets damaged. With a monster cab like a 1515/66 using a commercial shipping company, things seem to get pretty complex pretty quickly, since the shipping cost is significant.

Hope it all works out OK.

Hey, I just got my new LDS 15/6.5 about a week ago...does anyone here know what crossover Mr. Oatman is using now in the new ones?

This cab seems to sound a bit different compared to my older one (bought it about 6 months ago).

I'll give him a call, but I know he's busy and I hate bothering him. Thanks everyone...and yes, there are cab pictures on the way :)

Break it in for a while - then drop him an email. I believe he offers a few different xovers.

Stuff can sound unbalanced until the 3015LF loosens up though so rule that out first. 30hz sine wave at medium power for a while.

Thank you, I will definitely follow this advice. I know he offers a few crossovers, and on this build I failed to specify which one I wanted...I hope I didn't get the "off-the-shelf" kind. I believe on the last build it was the variety that crossed at 800 Hz (Patterson?) which I was happy with. Again though, thank you, I'll play through the new one more to rule out SCS (stiff cone syndrome) :D

ouch. I specified the greenboy crossover twice in email, and I'm not even sure if I got it or not... since I didn't mention it over the phone. I'm sure one day I'll find out but it's close enough for rock n roll for now. Whatever it is sounds fine.

Somewhat unrelated note. There's no sound coming out of my HF section lately. Don told me to check for a fuse and I kinda peeked around and didn't see anything. I haven't had the time lately to do much more troubleshooting... hopefully nothing is too wrong... I'll probably need someone to help cuz I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff. :hmm:

Don't check it with a bass. Use a CD with lots of high freq content, such as jazz with some sizzling cymbals, etc That will let you know right away if your tweeter is working.
