Since this is "LDS club" thread, I was wondering if people were considering designs besides neo given the price increase.

Hey guys, to get back on the LDS track, just in case some who are considering a 15/6 type cab have never heard one, here is a clip I did with reasonably good sound quality, and a full range, clean head and also a 'full range' bass (a 70's style J bass with stainless steel roundwounds). The few clips I've heard of these type of cabs have been quite bass heavy and 'dark' sounding (due to the player's tone goals). This clip is a bit more full range, again, so you can hear kind of the full breadth of the cab's capabilities.

While these cabs aren't particularly my thing, they sound great, and this demo is kind of cool since we bring the mid driver and tweeter in and out so you can kind of get a feel for what each component does. I've again compared quite a few different builds of these cabs, and to my ear (in the same room with the same player and the same bass) sound 90%+ identical, so this should give you a pretty good feel for the general tone of these. I again find the brand of mid driver having the largest impact in tonal differences. This cab has the 18sound mid driver crossed over at 800hz.

Regarding new prices, I think the wholesale cost of the 3015LF when up about $50, and I believe Don is just passing that along to the customer, so really not a big deal. Not exactly sure of the impact though... depends on the mid driver also, but IMO the increase in neo prices sure isn't a deal killer for these (unless, I guess you are a DIY guy and can't get the wholesale price).

I believe the mix of neo and non neo cabs that Don does is about 50/50. He does a lot of old school multi 10 cabs, etc.

Question for you guys. I bought a 15/6 cab from Don and from the moment I got the cab it would making this loud clicking noise when I connected to my GK-MB2-500 head but played fine with my MB LMT800. see this thread: clicking noise

So I just lived with it for around 7 months and didn't use my GK with the cab but then I got a Streamliner and then got the same clicking sound.
So I called Don and he said send it back to him and if there was a problem he'd pay the freight both ways and fix it. If there was no problem I'd have to pay shipping.
So Don ended up replacing the crossover with a new and better crossover that just came out.

Got the cab tonight and no more clicking and it sounds great (I can't really tell if it sounds any better or not).

So my question is should I ask Don for the money I spent to ship it to him ? It cost me around $50.00 to ship it.

Now I'm guessing Don lost $ on the cab. For one thing I bought it cheaper than his normal price after he repaired some shipping damage on it after it was shipped to the guy that originally ordered it. Then he lost out on the crossover then had to pay shipping back to me. Also he sent me some plastic corners and rubber feet at no charge after I got the cab as with the metal corners it would slide all over the back of my car.

Now I could use the money but I'd also feel kind of bad asking him for the money.

So What do you guys think ?

If it were me I'd pay for the shipping.

If that's what he said, I do not think it would be unfair to ask him to do what he initially agreed. Without pointing fingers, the cab developed a problem or always had the problem thru no fault of yours. Is it fair to you to pay the extra costs, nevermind the added hassles involved, when it was not your fault? That is up to you to decide.

But then again on the other hand, its not a huge amount of money. If you are not especially hard up for the cash, you might just let it slide.

I had a similar issue just weeks ago with another terrific custom cab builder. He offered to pay shipping both ways and I countered with paying the shipping to him. I did it because he built a great product and the issue wasn't really his fault or mine, and he was doing the right thing in making it 100% right. But the choice was mine, YMMV.

There's no correct answer; IMO it depends on your financial situation. I'd eat the 1-way shipping, because I'm easily able and am so happy with Don's work and product. YMMV.

I had a chance to speak with Don who gave a pretty decent quote for a 3x10 600w cab for me. I'm kind of debating spending more money for that against a 2x10 10.2NEO by Carvin, same amount of wattage. Would an extra 10" speaker technically move more air? I'm assuming yes?

Sorry this is so longwinded

Try taking the grille off before you send it back. If it's clicking one of the biggest points of that with these cabs is if the grille is not stood off enough...and the streamliner and MB500 are so bassy they can exacerbate that.

If you can fix it with a hand full of deeper rubber standoffs (like I had to do to my 15/6) it can save you both a lot of time and money.

Yes, and Carvin's neos do not compare favorably to Eminence's that Don can use (and Don can even use some stuff that is superior to the eminences if you're willing to pay the premium).

I would definitely agree with that. Don built me a 2x8 3 way cabinet that sounds great with DB and EB. At that time he used B&C Neo Drivers, because when he compared them to the Eminence 8's (which I don't think are even available anymore) he didn't think that the sounded as good. His words were that they were close but no cigar.

I don't know that they are B&C for sure, but, I will say this:
They're still my fave cabs...and I've tried, literally, a ton of speaker cabs.

Don told me he had neo's he liked finally, and while I'd love my cabs to be lighter, I don't want to mess with what I know works really well for me; both for DB and slab.

Don't want to derail the thread, Chef, but, what appeals to you about these cabs with the eights, as far as Bass guitar goes ? I have been on a similiar quest as you, about to try a 15/6/1, and have gone through a bunch of different cabs, trying to find THE one.

For me, they're a great balance of depth, mids and top end sheen (the one with the 5" mid is smoother of course, and my DB fave).

I already sent and got it back. It must have been the crossover. The clicking would start the second I turned the amp on even before the amp warmed up without my bass. The noise would stop immediately after I disconnected the cab.

Anyways I think I'm going to email Don and leave it up to him if he wants to refund the shipping. Maybe we can split the difference. I do have say Don was very helpful at trying to help solve this.

Don had me 'double check' your cab (I'm pretty sure it was your cab... wide profile 15/6 so that your tube head could fit on top, if I remember correctly) prior to sending it back to you, and it sounded fantastic. I'm not sure what crossover he installed for you, but he said it was top of the line. Cab sounds great! Enjoy.
