Mac or PC?

Well this has turned into quite the mudslinging match. Condescending attacks, superfluous and subjective arguments, and professional beratements based on computer logos and software preferences. Am I in Talkbass or /g/? :scowl:

Come on, it's just a freaking computer logo, in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter? Do I think Macs are overpriced? Yes. Do I think they're a waste of money? No, as long as you're in a field where they work better for you than Windows or Linux. Do I think you should get one? I don't know, I know I would't get one based on my experiences and needs, but many others think otherwise. And that's perfectly fine and you don't need to attack people for having different preferences and experiences.

Seriously, the lot of you need to grow up.

I don't doubt it... but that is about YOU, not about the machine in question.

I'm more productive on a Unix box than I ever am with a Windows or Mac box - but that isn't because Unix is better, it's because I'm better at Unix.

But nobody here is arguing that Macs are better for everyone all the time. YOU are the one telling us that what we are doing by using Macs is wrong. If UNIX does what you need better, then rock out. I ran only Linux for years, for example, and it was wonderful for me. However, my current needs and wants fall significantly more in line with what Apple provides than what anyone else does.

If you can show me a $900 machine as powerful as mine (year old 13 inch Macbook Pro), with all of the bells and whistles that this one has, and it was a little cheaper... I'd still like this because I like OSX, Logic, and Garageband. I don't want to use Windows because I don't find it very conducive to getting things done. I find it very clunky for my uses when compared to OSX, and Linux is just too limited for me when it comes to external hardware and software compatibility.

I find all of these features invaluable:
Unibody design
Magsafe adapter
High quality screen
Huge multitouch, click anywhere touchpad
Great backlighting
Very high quality webcam
Firewire 800
and on and on and on...

I like those features, and I see no benefit in trading some of them for power I won't use, and an OS that I do not personally like. Period.

You can all ramble on and on and on about marginal price differences but that's not what is important to me. What's important to me is having a reliable, quality product with nice features that gets the job done and that I enjoy using. For this price point, a Windows machine simply does not provide me with those things.

gribuski: You can do everything on a PC that you can do on a mac. Why should they spend 3 times as much money on the same hardware?

Did you even read what I wrote? I use both, and each one has their merits. I admitted the PC is better for work stuff - and I just prefer to use a Mac for other things.

The virus/speed thing is my experience, and everyone I know that has switched to a Mac has had the same reaction. PCs can do anything a Mac can...and Mac's do cost a bit more.

But I guarantee over 5 year period, you could make do with one OSX machine and not miss a beat. You'd definitely have to replace an average Windows machine in that time-frame b/c it would get bogged down. Windows 7 seems better than XP and Vista, but I can tell my work laptop has slowed in the 1.5 years I've had it. My Macbook runs exactly like it did 3 years ago.

Here's a drawing representing the evolution of the crap storm that this thread is:
