I don't post much but need to poll the TB community on this... If you're a guy, and you have initiated a divorce, meaning you asked and received a divorce from your ex-wife... regrets? Good choice? I know every relationship/situation is unique but I just want to hear from people to get an idea. I am really struggling in my marriage right now to hang in there. Thanks in advance.

My sympathies....I went thru a divorce years ago....married out of college...lasted 8 years. We just wanted different things out of life. Right thing to do for me.

Second marriage...has lasted 26+ years, but it ain't been easy and still isn't. We are both strong personalities and fairly high tempers, so we can be battling bickersons a lot. But we usually get around to resolving it when we realize we like each other's colorful personalities.

Been close to the edge 20 times in those 26 years. Control issues, respect issues, etc. No infidelity ever. If there was, that would have done it.

Find a place to go and chill when times get tough. Sometimes a little space (and some extra bass practice) works wonders.

Wish you success in finding the answers...

I am divorced now, entirely initiated by me, and it was seriously the best thing I ever did. Your situation may be different, but I was tired of being married to a negative person who refused to get her crap together, who constantly argued with me over her insecurities, who tried to control every aspect of my life from what I wore to who I hung out with (hint: anyone but my friends) etc.

I couldnt do it anymore. I was miserable everyday, and she was the root of it all. The very next day after I left her (though adjusting to being alone) I felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders and my life has improved tenfold since.

I am now with a beautiful woman who has all (if very few) of the good qualities of my ex plus many more, and none of the negative ones. We're extremely happy together, we live together (something my ex and I were never able to do because she was always spending money and refused to look for workk for a long time) I've reconnected with a lot of my friends, I have a new band, and my life is wholly positive now.

Seriously, the best thing I ever did. But like I said, your situation could be entirely different and YMMV.

You didn't mention if you had kids or not. Makes a huge difference in my book. With kids you have to make sure you have tried everything possible to stay together. Without kids.... meh.

Divorce is never pretty, nor is it fun. It is, however, the best solution for two people who have grown apart. I was divorced 10 years ago, and have no regrets or hard feelings.
It really is amazing how liberating it feels at first!

+1 on the kids, though. :hmm:
Luckily I didn't have to consider that...

Hope it works out for you.

2 marriages, 2 divorces, both great decisions. My kids were from first marriage and their mom and I have made it past the arguing and learned that we are still parents. We get along pretty well. 2nd wife, no kids, we ended it and I haven't spoken to her since. I never should have married her to begin with, it lasted less than a year and a half. I'm getting married for the 3rd and final time in April. Met the perfect woman for me, we get along so well it's scary.

Divorced, though she hit me with it. She was just ahead of the curve from me. Thinking back, it was never a good fit in the first place.

Now, I can't imagine how much my life would suck if I were still married to her.

My main reason for posting is about the kids issue.

I for one, think a bad mairrage is worse for kids than living in a divorced family.

I would have been better off if my parents got divorced. Divorce isn't the Scarlett Letter that it used to be, hell everyone gets divorced. The question is, why do people still get married in the first place?

Research serial monogamy. Fascinating stuff.

Fortunately the signs became obvious that she was becoming mean towards myself and even toward people she didn't know.

First I chose to close the financial accounts (joint accounts were closed). This was months before I decided on divorce.

After repeated warnings that her behavior was disrespectful and wrong, I filed the papers behind her back in the morning, and after lunch-moved things that were mine before the marriage, or things that were considered mine, and not joint property. The bliss lasted for about a year and a half. I didn't pay a lawyer a cent, and the clerk's office was more than helpful about getting forms, and which to submit to the Court. BTW, she didn't show up for the second Court date, and it was over in a few minutes...

No regrets-except for not following conventional wisdom: know someone at least two years before 'legally' tying the knot.

Two-time loser here too...

:hmm:

...both were initiated by the other party, first one was definitely against my better judgment (still think so to this day), second one I wish I'd done it myself sooner as I was utterly miserable with her - however, she had kids when I met her, and I utterly adored two of them (the other two...take 'em or leave 'em, and neither spent much time in our home anyhow), so I kept trying to make it "work", which just made us both unhappy (Compromise: a choice that P!$$3$ off both parties equally).

I can tell you that once I accepted both (which took a while on #1; #2 I felt better the next morning! ;) ), life got much better. I've had no contact with #1 (we live in different states now, too painful), and limited contact with #2 (we live in the same town, we're still doing paperwork because the state of NC is Victorian :spit: in how it handles divorces - yo, morons, if two people don't want to be married, making them wait a YEAR to dissolve the union won't change a damn thing! :spit:, and I still try to spend time with my ex-stepson).

For the OP, think things through, and if you can honestly see yourself better off in all ways being ALONE (not with someone else!), then I think you know the path to follow.

No matter what, it won't be an easy road, even if it is right to split. If you decide to try and work it out, I strongly suggest counseling with a counselor you both agree upon.

My ex started the divorce. She ended up dismissing it twice because she could... The third time I filed and I regret not doing it the first time. I would have gotten through the process quicker and stopped a lot of the games her and her lawyer played.

In marriage number 2. I initiated divorce #1. Not sure how long this one will last honestly. She has turned into a very negatve person. It gets tough dealing with that on an everyday basis. I refuse to stay in a situation that is not any fun just for the sake of tryng to save the institution of marriage. You only get one life. You have to look out for yourself.

On a side note I really believe the institution of marriage has changed from 20, 30, 50 years ago. The world moves too fast and is too accessible now. Too many oportunities to meet new people. Why be miserable for the sake of an institution? Some people get lucky and find that perfect special someone on the first go around but I would say that is the minority. I think a lot of us know of grandparents who hated each other for 90% of their marriage but stayed together miserable in separate beds because that was what was expected. IMO those days are gone. And that certainly won't be me. It might be selfish but I only get one life and I alone am responsible for making the best of it.

P.S. I have no kids from either marriage. 2 step-kids in marriage # 2 but they were both in their teens. Having kids does play a role and does make things harder during a split. Doesn't mean that the split shouldn't happen because kids pick up on all the negativity if the marriage is on the rocks.

P.S.S. I am sure if 90% of the women in the world saw my post I would be burned at a stake. :hiding:

As has been mentioned many times, every relationship is totally different. One person's experiences should not influence your decision. It's your life, not anyone else's.

My first divorce was initiated by my ex, and it came out of the blue (at least for me), but it turned out she had been unhappy for a long time AND getting busy with my ex-friend (they're now married). The way I look at it, she did what she has done with many, many things in her life - quit. The best thing I have from those 13 years together is my oldest daughter (she's a fantastic kid). My ex and I have a decent working relationship as parents, and remain communicative and flexible in regards to our daughter's activities.

My current marriage has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever dealt with, and there have been numerous time that I've felt that I can't continue. My wife has some moderate anxiety and depression issues that have had a significant impact on everything to do with our relationship. However, we have a daughter (also a huge challenge) and, to me, that changes the picture dramatically. As hard as it is some days, I remain committed to my marriage and my family, and we are currently working with a counselor to try and get things on track. I can't say for sure right now that my current marriage will last the test of time, but I'm sure going to do everything I can to get things where they should be. If we didn't have a daughter, I'm pretty sure I'd be on strike two.

Hey Eric, I'm sorry to hear that youre having some problems in your current marriage. I remember you telling me when I I was going through my divorce how your first wife (test wife) was the dumps and all, and that you were much happier with your current relationship. I guess things can alwayc change, and quickly at that. I hope the best for you man! You seem to be a good guy, and I know you'll do what you need to take care of your family. Good luck!
