Markbass cabs, the sound you're looking for?

Hmm, firstly - ears are your auditory sense, not your eyes. Markbass are moderately overpriced, for the drivers they use. Glockenklang are very expensive, but there again they have Volt transducers, handmade in the UK. So, the price is justifiable. I can't honestly say I am overly concerned that you think I may be exaggerating-my-point, I know what I hear. I trust my ears. To me, an experienced sound engineer and bassist, the difference is clear and it is significant.

Based on what I've learned on TB, a ported cabinet should be designed around the speakers, right? So if it's a well designed cabinet and then you change the speaker, and that's all, it's not going to sound as good. In theory you could put a more expensive, premium speaker in there and it wouldn't sound as good. So I don't think it's far-fetched that you would hear a difference. I don't know anything about design or whether MB designs good cabinets.

Simply put. It's a marked improvement. But, I like it, to me it's a significant improvement. The trouble is of course, we're trying to quantify a qualitative, subjective abstract such as what sounds "good" or "better", but it might not be "good" for everyone. My very good friend, a long time, experienced bassist quite likes my smaller MB rig but she's in a rock band and loves her Ampeg rig.
As we say in the UK, "different strokes for different folks"...:)

Just reread all posts here . For clarification are we just taking about the Asian made yellow line speakers or are we including the Italian made yellow coned ones (Italian B&C ?) like in the earliest Jeff Berlin Combo and NY151. I have been using this rig since I’m thinking ‘08? and literally have zero complaints or buyers remorse. Plenty of power, sounds good with all by basses and lightweight.

I do have a new to me incoming rig-1999 Eden Highwayman 500 head and 1999 410XLT cab. Due to the 98# cab weight it will be for home use only. I always liked the sound of these early ones and ran up on a great deal on this pair in excellent condition.

We say that in the USA also. Similar to "Whatever floats your Boat" Mainly when 2 disagree and both believe their right. You both may be right The Glockenklang is most likely a better speaker and you hear a nice improvement and it seems to work but Most engineer/Designers do promote the fact that they match the driver to the box to work as one and this provides improvement over others that don't.

Hiya, yes, just the Indonesian Yellow Line speakers. If your cab is circa '08 it'll be B&C.:)

Thanks for clarification. I’d always thought mine had the B&C built ones. I thought you were saying the only good ones had black cones. I had heard the later ones moved production to Indonesia. I haven’t actually played or heard any of those but I have been surprised at the quality of instruments coming out of Indonesia.

You don't read too well. Perhaps you should revisit my post.
But, you're not overly concerned..
P.S. An "experienced sound engineer and bassist"? You have listed zero credentials in your profile. I'd be more than casually interested in your "credentials".

oh boy mystical magical box theory.

which has a reasonable amount of justification.

but for the most part. a driver is what a driver is.

some sound better, some sound ok and fill a budget, some are complete turds.
no amount of magical box will make a turd sound better lol

and any manufacture either they choose to throw in some marketing bull crap about box magic or not
if you buy very expensive cast frame drivers by the pallet for a business. nobody's stupid enough to make the
" wrong" box for it. the box is designed to work with the driver yes. but literally 20 to 100 other drivers will drop in and work fine.

no magic box will make a turd speaker sound " better"
and as long as the airspace is reasonable correct
a very good sounding driver will always be a good sounding driver.

people arent stupid , and your looking at the same typical 1 cubic feet for a live audio/bass 10" driver.

its not like this amazing 200 dollar driver comes in a 1.2 cubic foot box
and if by chance you put it in a 1.3 or a 1.1 cubic foot box. then all of a sudden everything goes to hell and it sounds bad. no it sounds fine, and 20 others would be fine as well in the same box

anyways i totally get the point of the thread, not only is the larger cast frame B&C driver more impressive driver.
but the cost difference would be huge. after dealing with countless stamped cheap drivers and likewise better designed cast frames
i can tell you
within reason as in everything in life. you really do get what you pay for

Absolutely, and totally.

I went to the Gateway School of Music Technology, in London, in 1985/86. I'm 52. You are basically calling me "a liar" because you don't much like having this dialogue with a woman who could possibly be (And is...!) a sound engineer and and an experienced musician. I also spent over two years being an 'escort' (sex worker, prostitute!) in leaner times, but, I bet that fact sits far more comfortably with your misogynistic bigotry than as a qualified sound engineer. I also did a degree in Journalism and Digital Media at University of West London in 2001/2003... But how can this be? I'm 'merely a woman'.....

Common, unremarkable sexism.......it had to happen sooner or later, the award for "that guy" goes to you!

Why bring gender into the discussion? He mentions nothing about it. You are fairly new on TB, and regardless of his (offending?) opinions (which are only relevant to him), there ARE many members that are publicly recognized musicians, engineers, luthiers etc. Their records speak for themselves.

You bringing out the "sexist" card will probably generate some mixed reactions (blue pill vs red pill etc). Personally, I am not impressed.

If I had been a guy, he wouldn't have questioned my credentials. It's a typical, all too familiar scenario that permeates everything, especially online forums. He basically said; paraphrasing: "I want to see your credentials because I don't believe you are what you say you are".
Ergo: he said "you're lying unless you prove your credentials"
Why? Because, I'm a woman. I have to prove to this boomer that I am who I say I am.
If you were a woman, "on the internet" and furthermore on very male dominated forum's such as this, you'd have at least an inkling. As it is, your another man, defending the flagrant sexism of another man. Telling me: "you're not impressed"....
The privilege and entitlement replete in those few words tells me all I need to know.
I don't need to impress you, or anyone else. Thanks. If that's OK with you men.

This thread is April Fool's right?

Despite the oppression of women by men in the world's history our harmonious travel depends on assuming that the other person means us well. If the person doesn't then respond by leaving or calling them on it, using it as a teachable moment and/or just moving on.

Assuming that someone who may be having a bad day is "anti you" can be biased. As biased as we claim the "other" is. The spat here sounded to me like two people fighting on the internet. That's all. People get wound up and without a real person in front of them to actually read, assume the antagonist is out to get them.

You played the feminist card. We can't know that that's his motivation. If you disagree with me, is it because I'm a male? Yes some people want to know some people's credentials. Sometimes those confirm that they only know what they know and aren't innovators or only trust what they've been taught and aren't using their ears.

Let's not fuss about some speakers that some like, some don't and that we are free to not buy or use.

Whether it's TB or Talk Knitting people can try to justify their purchases or opinions. These sites like social media by their nature support behavior that wouldn't happen in person.

So everybody breathe. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We don't have to respond. We aren't righting some societal wrong by saying anything.

Some one pass me a Corona.

Now that Bogeybass has set us straight that Design and engineering speaker cabinets is a deception by manufactures and useless; opens up DIY options for the layman.

As to Markbass sounding 'Meh' I had heard many Bass players using their amps in real world live situations and was always impressed with quality of sound reproduced as audience member hence why I bought one. Fortunately for me my Band, fellow musicians and complimentary audience members are impressed with 'Meh'. I do understand how subjective sound is and there are plenty of options that may fit one's expectations.

I don't see 'Because I am a Women' scenario; It seems his doubts were based on your opinions and conclusions

Bless you. But you're a guy. Truthfully, I shouldn't have to explain or justify myself here, it's so obvious it's staggering.

But thanks for the input anyway.

LOL! Your gender matters not to me. Your response to sexism has grown old and tiring. Your age is irrelevant as is what's between your legs. All I am addressing is your claims. I simply disagree with you. Try not to get up on your, " I am woman" soapbox.
No one really cares. Here, we are bass players of both genders and of varied experience. It's fine for you to express your opinions/feelings but I'm not sure I've ever come across such defensiveness on this site.
Seek help for your anger issues.

Your assumptions about how women are treated is way out of whack, especially here. You speak as if you've been through some personal traumas and, for that, I'm sorry for you.
Nevertheless, you've turned this topic into a real mess. I never called you a liar nor I did demean you for your gender. In fact, I didn't even know you were female until I looked at your profile page. There are many great female musicians/bass players out there. Tal and Rhonda come to mind. So, let's dispense with the bull and get back to your point. You think the newer Markbass cabs are overpriced and meh sounding. I disagree.
See? Wasn't that easy?
