Markbass Megathread PART 2

Thanks Vic. I feel my gear is quite modest and ordinary compred to most here but it does the job.
Its a shame but my fav cab is the UL115 and i never use it now as its a spare.
This is a bit OT, but I'll say it anyway...

I think you overestimate "most" here. IMHO, the folks that have a bunch of expensive gear here are actually a relative few, but it may not seem so just 'cause they may tend to be more vocal about stuff. :) IMHO your collection is very respectable indeed. Smart choices.

Thanks, that makes me feel better.
Over here in the Uk its very difficult to try out some of the good gear like Bagend, Bergantino, EA, Schroeder etc. In fact both my 1210 and UL212 were brought un tested and only one shop in London (and maybe England) stocks Epifani AFAIK.

Of course,, the flip side is that you can walk in to almost any corner shop and get a MB head :smug:

You guys that got your LMII at GC. How long did it take for you to receive the GC warranty forms that are supposed to come in the mail?

I got the LMII about 3 weeks ago, still no warranty info. Just wonder when I should start whining. Thanks

Almost a month, but I wasn't worried because I heard it would take at least a couple weeks.

So, if I want to use my RavenLabs blender for upright bass
instead of the MB preamp, I can do it by switching the
effects loop to series?? Will the MB eq still be effecting the
tone of the head, or will I just be able to use the RavenLabs
or Sansamp for my tone?
I would ask this privately, but I figure there have to be others
like me who just don't quite understand the difference, and
I'll be the dolt who asks the question.

You don't have to change any jumpers, just run the RL into the effects return and you are good to go. Yes, the tone controls on the LM II will still affect the signal from the RL. By keeping the EFX loop in parallel you can use the front input on the LM II for another instrument if you want, in addition to what is in the Blender.

but if it's in parallel, the blender is only effecting 1/2 of the preamp

Yep, and this is important to keep in mind.

The "up" side is the efx loop can completely fail and you still have bass sound. The "down" side is it limits how much "effect" you can have, since the most you can achieve is 50/50, but IMHO, on bass, that's a good thing most of the time.

Huh?

Whether the loop is in series or parallel, the return is going to the same point in the preamp. Take a look at the block diagram in your owner's manual. The only thing different is that the stages between the front panel input and the point where the return enters that gain stage are disconnected when in series. Unless the OM is wrong. :hmm:

From his post it seems that B String wants to run the RL Blender into the FX loop instead of the front panel input, so either setting for the loop will work for him.

Jesse, congrats on the new rig combo. So are you GAS free???:ninja:

Hey Chris,
I'm sure feeling good about this rig!! I can't believe how light the cab is and I love the versatility of the LMII head. I knew it was sounding good at home, but last night was the first run with the full band. I was digging the tone and had lots of volume left in reserve, so I was able to play with a really light touch. It should do fine at our Labor Day gig w/PA support.

Very cool! Per your other post about your EQ setting, and since this is a Markbass thread, I have to again praise the Markbass guys for the way the voiced (center frequency and Q) the mid controls on that head.

For the 310UL, which to my ear, is just a touch shy in the low mid punch area, the low mid control (I think centered around 300 hz) is just perfect for bringing a touch of 'burp' to the attack. For the 410UL, which is quite upper mid present, the upper mid control (I think around 800hz) is literally perfect for just taking a touch of upper mid honk out of that cab. Just perfect.

Interestingly, for the Schroeder 1212L, which I continue to dig quite a bit, a slight boost in the bass, a slight cut in the low mids, and a slight boost in the upper mids works perfectly to even out the voicing of that cab.

Very cool Markbass guys!!!! I've never had an EQ section that was so simple but yet worked so well, at least with the cabs that I tend to enjoy for my tone goals, weight and size requirements, volume needs, etc., etc.

IMO as always.

Enjoy that rig!!!!

Thanks, Ken!! I appreciated eveyone jumping in on some of the other cab threads where I was agonizing over my choice. I'm really digging this setup. The LMII is a great head.

I was a little concerned about the low mid center when I first got the head, but I think its gonna work. While I boost the low mids on the LMII, I also boost the low mids on my J-Retro (JO5) just a tad (150 Hz), but I think that has a lot to do with the humcancelling Barts and the slight scoop of the pre. I don't hear any lack of low mids with my 55-02 (dip switches at 500 Hz). But I dig the low mids, so I usually boost a little on the LMII anyway.:)

Unless I misunderstand your post, or the original question, this is incorrect.

My understanding of the question is, it's a blending question, not an insertion point question.

In parallel mode, you have two copies of your input signal... one that gets passed directly through no matter what you do with the efx chain, AND whatever's going on with the efx chain.

As such, by the time they get re-blended and passed on to the eq/filter stage and then the power section, 50% is "dry" and 50% is whatever dry/wet blend is coming from the efx chain.

So even if you have an effect that's set to 100% effect, it's still only 50% overall of the sound you hear at the cab. This is what Jack (jzucker) was talking about, and he's right.

The point being, if you want to do ALL your blending in the efx chain, it MUST be in series mode for it to work as expected/desired. It DOES matter.

Also, the manual/block diagram is correct, and while the first gain stage is skipped if you plug into the return instead of the front panel, this is regardless of series/parallel mode.

The problem with you guys is that bassists are loving your
products and buying them faster than you can deal with at
the moment. For some of us, its a matter of.... Once I know
what I want, I want it NOW!
Thank you for being so accessible. I'm sure you don't have
enough hours in the day as it is, let alone dealing with us
idiots on TB. If I weren't married, I'd be all over you. (maybe)

Hahaha. Good luck with your marriage! :help:
