Markbass Megathread PART 3

...drool... :)

Ok, here's a new game... LMII "micro-rigs"

Here are my two:

LMII + Epifani UL110
LMII + Yamaha BBT110S

I have a UL112 as well, but I really find it's better as a "bottom" to the UL110. WOW a great 110 with the LMII is an incredible thing. That (what I'll call) dynamic punch of the LMII just really brings out the bark in a small high power capable cab.

I'm playing the "micro-rig" game now myself and am looking for a single 12". I tried the UL112 s1 a couple of years ago and while it was impressively punchy and pleasant sounding, I didn't love it. Based on all the reviews and awards, I'd like to try the Markbass 121H Traveller cab. Weight is a major consideration since I already have the 47 lb UL310.

I also played through the 121P while I was there... it was pretty cool, but I'm gonna' stick with my LMII/UL110 "combo"... MAN that sounds great!!!

By a strange twist of fate, I will have both an Epi PS112 and a Traveller 121H in my possession this weekend to try side by side with my LMII.

After much vacillating, I decided to order the PS112 from Musician's Friend. This was back on the 16th. I got an email saying it had shipped but every day the UPS shipment tracker said it hadn't been scanned or picked up by UPS. I got on Musicians Friends website and they showed it being backordered for 32 days. I called them and they said there was a chance UPS picked it up but never scanned it in. Or it could have never been shipped at all (more likely). They said
I would have to wait until the 28th to get credited my money back.

The Guitar Center sale was on, and I didn't want to miss a chance to get the Markbass 121H cab at 20% off, so I went ahead and ordered it in figuring the Epi PS112 would never show.

Guess what arrived today via UPS? Yep, got the Epi, and the Markbass should arrive by the weekend. Now I have to send one back, but at least I'll get to do a real comparison and be confident in my choice!

I've been using my UL112 for a good while now, and it is one of my favorite little cabs. It can get very loud and maintain a great punchy tone without breaking up. It is my dedicated rehearsal/jam session cab. However, I would love to hear a UL110 alone as well as paired with the UL112 as Vic has.

I have a UL112 also, and the pairing between LMII and 112 is a very good one as well.

From my comparisons thus far, my best micro rig in order would be:

1) Schro Mini 10+ Light
2) Berg HT112
3) Epi UL112

As I mentioned the Schro is so small, light, punchy, and loud that it's a hard rig to beat. It also passes the wifes "cute" test, which in my house can go a long way. She didn't think the sound was all too cute which gives you an idea of how loud it is. This option seriously allows me to pack the LMII into a gigbag, sling the bass over one shoulder, and hold the cab easily in my other hand without much effort at all.

The Berg sounds very good. Not quite as easy to carry, but the added lows and highs of the LMII sort of completes the Bergs mid focus and makes this a very full and musical pairing. Not as punchy as the Schro, but it is more smooth.

Lastly, the UL112 and LMII. Sort of an in between the Schro and Berg. Not as full sounding as Berg, but easier to carry. Not quite as punchy as the Schro, but very close. It truly is in between the two cabs. It's lighter than than the Berg, but almost as awkward to carry.

Like I said, because I was looking for a really easy rig to carry, the Schro and LMII wins it for me, but I'm fortunate to be able to have all three at my disposal depending on the situation.

Please let us know what you think if the 121H. I'm still trying to decide whether to go with that or a UL112.

I know it's only a 12", but how do you find the low end within its size/power class?

Here is my micro rig. This is about the size of a 112, but you get the full 500 watts @4ohms.

LMII and Schroeder 1210.

I know you asked Tony this question, but if you don't mind me stepping in, since I have a UL112 as well, I find very exceptional... maybe even stunning. My only "issue" with the UL112 is my same issue with any 112/horn cab... the "gap" between the "woofer" and the horn creates a dip in the response that I miss. As such, I always start with the UL110, which also has amazing output and great low end, but better definition, and then ADD the UL112 for a bigger sound and more output.

Man, I bet that kills... is that an R or an L cab?

It's an R. It has been all I've needed to this point. It definitely gets more than loud enough. I can generally count on PA support so even the bigger venues it will get me by as a stage monitor.

The VPF works great with the mid heavy Schro's if you need to dial in a less mid heavy or "articulate" tone. I actually don't need much of the VPF because I like the heavy mid punch. It cuts through with no problems.

Cool. My LMII/PS112 is my 'mico' rig and I use a S1 UL310 for the bigger duty.

I heard exactly the same thing - that "gap" in the crossover area. The Epi 10" cabs are pretty seamless. I suppose that's the nature of the beast when stepping up the size of the woofers, especially the high-powered designs. But for my lower volume gigs I need as much fidelity as possible since the sound is often more exposed (quieter band, quieter audience). The UL110/UL112 combo gets a lot of raves and must be amazing, but I'm still stubbornly trying to find a "one light cab, one trip" solution for the smaller gigs.

Please let us know how the two compare:hyper:

I totally feel you on this. Thing is, the UL110 really does do a great job at the low end, even tho the UL112 should sound a bit deeper and bigger, but the question is, where do you want that seamlessness?

To me, filling in that gap in the middle is more important than adding low end, especially since that can sometimes be partially achieved through cab placement.

I'd say it's time to maybe exercise the MF return policy, get one of each, and return the one that doesn't do it. These are both fantastic cabs, and yeah, especially paired, they'll definitely raise eyebrows, but if it was me, I'd do it all over again the same way. Start with the 110, and then add the 112 if you need it.

Also, on the "112 issue" I'm not an expert, but I don't think it's a crossover thing. I think the same thing would happen no matter how much overlap there was between the high and low pass filters. I think it just has to do with the size stepping like you said.
