I agree, except I would replace "their holy book" with "a book". There are those who promote hatred, bigotry and racism from a book that teaches no such thing.

I'm discussing this from the 30,000 foot level for a reason. If I drop the altitude much we will violate forum rules and/or get this thread locked.

Yeah, the Beams and the Boones are everywhere in Kentucky and have largely intermarried. Don't piss them off.

Many of our neighbors have first hand experience with the organization. I played in a band here that played at a LOT of their events. I've heard some fascinating stories.

One of the scariest things you could do was, while squirrel or 'coon hunting, come across a marijuana field. You'd turn around and hope nobody saw you.

The bourbon business is exploding right now. My neighbor has worked at a local cooperage for almost 20 years and until recently they were making barrels strictly for wine. They are now doing bourbon barrels as well because the other companies are just swamped. It's all about the Asia market. Same thing happened with Wenatchee (WA) apples several decades ago.

Yes, people can misappropriate anything for their own means, and sometimes those things are religious. The deflecting to other more inclusive groupings doesn't change that or make it less bad.

I've personally witnessed a LOT of that stuff on other sites - that allow no-holds-barred discussion about this kind of stuff. It can get unbelievably ugly. I don't go to my former favorite any more other than to throw in a snipe or two every few months. I use the same name there. :)

Here I keep it light.

I'm a BA. I gave up pretty good wages to live in this commonwealth. Their IT shop pays Seattle style wages but it's two hours from my home, just south of Cincinnati. And I'm not going to get a separate apartment there. I love the quality of life I have with my wife and am not going to give that up to see her only on weekends.

I'm sue you're referring to me in the "couple posters" comment but you need to go back and read my posts, because nothing in them defends anyone who abuses others.

Your "rush" to criticize those who disagree with you is apparent, not to mention revealing.

Saying "B" is bad like "A" doesn't make "A" less bad, even (especially) if "A" is a subset of "B". Fundamentally I agree with you. I was merely commenting on those who saw "mythological perverts who use their "holy book" as the reason for them to promote hatred, bigotry, racism to the general detriment of the rest of the world" as people in need of defense. Those people seem to have rushed to defend people like al-Baghdadi because they perceived it as a slight against their group, even though no group was specified other than "mythological perverts who use their "holy book" as the reason for them to promote hatred, bigotry, racism to the general detriment of the rest of the world".

Basically they doth protest too much. I would hope that if someone were religious they would mind when religious people are hypocritical or hateful. Nowhere did @fjadams say anything about religious people in general, only a specific category of bad actors.
