Mesa/Boogie Official Club Thread...Part #2

Monday, I took my M6 head into the rehearsal studio because I was sick of the GK Backline head they have, which I have used in the past. That GK head, along with the matching cab, always has tons of flabby, boomy lows, making to hard to get a good sound with my Dingwall ABZ5 (how do you get a bad sound out of that bass?). I plugged into the GK 410 cab, turned the first mid-boost position, and the sound was awesome. I even spent some time in the second mid-boost position, depending on my PU selection. Everythng else was at about noon, and the master at 9-o'clock. It played nicely with the keys, guitar, drums, and vox. Man, I love that amp.

Just looking at the Mesa cab page. Is it true that the 112 PH clocks in at 42 lbs, and the 115 is 72 lbs and the 210 is 69 lbs? I can see how the dual drivers in the 210 might add up to make the total weight shift smaller despite the smaller cab size. But how is it that the 112 is 30 lbs lighter? I'm assuming it has to do with the 300w rating vs. the 600w on the other two cabs. It just seems strange to me.

edit - just looked at the external dimension, and they are a fair bit smaller
112 = 15*19*18
115 = 19*24*20
210 = 17*25*20

I love Boogie gear, but I am disapointed with the strict rules they put on their dealers. There is a great dealer in PA who has tons of Boogie gear. They don't sell much, and then Boogie tells them they have to buy more gear in order to remain a Boogie dealer, and its not just like one or two pieces they have to buy. Sadly the store is no longer a Boogie dealer thought they still have Boogie gear to sell. It's sad and frustrating as a consumer and for the store. :(

Mesa's 12 inch Speakers are made with Neodymium Magnets, so the speaker itself if lighter. and the size difference helps too.

I have a Mesa Boogie Buster wedge which is the 400+ in a smaller package. They wisely put two EV heavy 10" speakers in it which gives a very clear, and loud sound. The problem I had noticed lately was the round sound it offers lacked the punch that many solid state amps have.

I put my bass through a Radial passive box and then into the Boogie amp. What a difference it made! :hyper: It gives the sound more punch, faster attack, a more forward sound, similar to a solid state, but at the same it has the tube warmth of the Boogie amp. It sounds sooo good. I want to encourage you 400, 400+ and Buster users to try this Radial box with your amp. I like the passive version because it does not alter the sound of your bass or amp. It just gives it a punchy, and faster forward sound. I love it. :bassist:

In fairness all premium dealerships in the guitar industry have both a steep buy-in and a yearly re-up in product required.....the worst offender if you want to call it that being Gibson. As a dealer you have to sell the product and re-order, it's just business - say like a car dealership not ordering new cars because they didn't sell last year's models yet. I'm sure Mesa wants strong dealers to carry current product and give good service.

I have owned the PH115's, a PH210 and now have a pair of PH112 cabs and can confirm that the weights posted are pretty close. My 115 cabs felt like they weighed closer to about 80 pounds each. The 210 is a heavy beast and its deep as well so pretty awkward to move around. They all sound so good though. My new 112's are a breeze to carry and they sound fantastic.

I am considering switching from my GK Rig to a Mesa Rig.
I am now using a GK 410 cab...a GK115 cab....running them with a GK 700RBII head.
I was thinking about getting the M6 carbine Mesa head.
And then either of these cab combinations:
Powerhouse 610
Powerhouse 410
Powerhouse 412
or maybe going with the Powerhouse 210 and 115 cabs and running them together.

I am not gigging at the moment and have no clue when time will allow me to join a band any time soon.
So the size and weight factor is not a huge issue for me I guess.
As they will most likely stay idle in my home.

Any user reports on the various cabs?
Has anyone ran a PH210 and PH115 together with a M6 carbine head?
Does that head have any built in cross over or something to send the highs to the 210's and the lows to the 115?

Know very little to nothing about Mesa amps and cabs.
Have always used Hartke and GK, in the last 15 years...

But would love to give Mesa a rip! Would like to give tubes a try. etc.

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice...

I will be the last person to tell another what to buy:hiding:, but if it's for your home with no band in sight, a rig like that would be like living alone in a 10,000 square foot mansion, LOL. Having said that, if nuclear is where you want to go:hyper:, I'd advise an M9 to get the added eq and compression and a few more watts. Although I love their heads, I'm not into Mesa cabs, as I find there a better alternatives. A fEarful or similar cab under a Carbine head is a beautiful thing IME. It'll be clearer than a PH cab, and about as loud as a PH 610, while going deeper, at a fracxtion of the cost and weight. Have fun.

Too funny about the mansion.

I thought about the M9....
but really do not need 600 watts , let alone 900.
The M3 just does not have much as far as options...thus my thought to bump to the M6 at least.???
WHo knows...maybe I will sit on what I have? And be content.:hmm:

I just always wanted a Mesa rig...
and I could end up working with at least a guitarist. and jamming here and there....and would need the OOOOMPH to keep up with a marshall 50 or 100wt half stack.
I do like playing loud and blowing ear drums out. :bassist:

Sucks having no time to be in a band...miss it big time :(

If you have the scratch to cure your Mesa itch, why not have a ginormous eargasm with an M9 and PH610? Wanna go halfway, then M6 on your existing cabs. Just my .02

yeah will have the scratch...
If roll one of my basses and roll the head and 2 GK cabs...that will provide the scratch.
Just want to make sure I do it right and not roll an amazing bass to only end up not liking the stuff I get into.

I used to have a Hartke 810XL cab and a Hartke HA5500 head running it...
should have kept that cab....that 810XL cab kicked major butt...
I would think THAT cab with the M9 or even M6 would be sweet.

I think I am leaning towards a mesa PH610 and a M6 head...
who knows...thanks for the advice.

Cool. I will just reiterate that the M9's added features are superb. The eq allows you to trim at very low freq if the cab whines or there's boom in the room. These heads do NOT have the usual filters that trim ultra low bass that virtually all other production heads have-the fEarful and similar cabs love this, but some cabs and rooms do not. The compression is very musical. M6 is a great head, but the 9 takes it all to another level IMHO.

Thanks...will do a google search on fEarful ....never heard of them.
will check it out.
