Mesa/Boogie Official Club Thread...Part #2

so being hybrids they sound good at ALL volumes? low? mid? as well as high?
I would never need more volume than an M6 would produce...
I do not use the full power the GK 700RBII produces ...
And the M6 is more.

I just want to make one purchase and run with it for a long haul...do not want to keep buying and selling and loosing money to chase the dream for a rig I will love...
gets old...
I love buying and selling basses to keep me sane...
but prefer to stick with just one rig.

Being tube or solid state does not really define whether a rig sounds good at one volume or another. Though I will note that some all tube rigs, especially those with only one gain control, do tend to have a sweet spot.

With regard to the M6/M9, IME/IMHO, they sound good at all volume levels, even turned down low.

My main concern with you wanting to make only one purchase is that you get a chance to try this rig and be sure you like it first. The PH210 is one of my favorite 2x10's out there. It's bigger and heavier than some, but sounds the best of any that I have tried (though YMMV). These cabs are pretty balanced and relatively neutral, so I'd be more concerned about whether or not you love the M6/9 voicing. I do, as do lots of other cats, but it all comes down to your personal preferences.

Yea the PH1200 was what I thought could be the perfect answer.
They even have one at the music store locally too.
But I searched that cab and read up a bit on it.
Some users has issues with it when recording or something or another....I saw mixed reviews...so I started thinking in other directions.
Sure does look like it would blow a house over...

I understand that; I thought the same thing based on what I read while I was cab shopping. I spoke with Beaver at BC about it through email, and he suggested that cab. At the time, he said that was what he was using, and it sounded like it would fit what I was after. Boy was he right. If there is one at the store and they would let you try it out, I'd suggest just going and giving it a try. A lot of what I read was from folks who had never even used the cab before, so YMMV

Thanks man...sure does look like one great all around cab.
I could not imagine a company like MESA putting out a cab like that with "mixed speaker sizes" in it , unless it lived up to their awesome company name and standards.

You can control overall volume with the master volume.

The reason I like the M9 is that *I do* use the graphic eq and compressor, all the time...unlike Mr Bowlus

The M6/9 had quite a bit of low end. I had a hard time controlling that in clubland, with the cabs I use-which are not Mesa cabs. I *always* trim the lower two bands on the graphic, and have the compressor engaged, lightly.

The Boogie cabs may well be designed to work great with the Boogie head, and easily not have the issue I have with my cabs.

I did not step up to the M9 for power, the M6 has tons....

I can also back the PH1000. It is an amazing cab. It's got everything you need if you like clear uncoloured (to my ears) tone. Heck if you were in the area, I'd let you try it out. If you have access to one, you owe it to yourself to try it out!

Yes the local store has the PH1200 on the floor...it was in one of their sound rooms for like a year...
Hate buying cabs and amps that have been in the stores sound rooms for a long time or at all really...ya pay their crazy new prices for what ends up being fairly used gear. I like keeping money in the hands of locals...BUT? May well end up ordering online if someone will ship this stuff cheaply or free?

They are a great company, but not without their quirks. That cab's design is based more on looks than logic. From what I have heard (both directly and indirectly), the other PH cabs are better. The 610 certainly kills. having said that, IMHO the ultimate cab to fully cash in on the massive low end (if that suits your sound) and power of the Carbines is a fEarful or similar. Again, just my free opinion, worth every cent it costs

The ph412 is a truly outstanding cab on many levels. It's large but not overly heavy due to the Neo drivers, it has well laid out handles and wheels and the tone of the cab is so well balanced and full without any overly hyped frequencies.

The Ph1200 in comparison is muddy and deep with impressive low end but nowhere near the clarity or balanced tone. I compared them side by side and was sucked at how much better the 412 sounded in every way. I just adore my ph412 and cannot recommend it enough.

You and I both stand by these cabs 100%. I praise this cab so much. I played through an Ampeg 810e before I got my Mesa, and that cab just did not compare to the Mesa. The lows mids and highs are all so balanced in the Mesa, and it has tons of punch. It's able to put out massive low end due to the porting, and it's the perfect height to get the speakers close to your ears.

It's very easy to move around, there are handles on the top, bottom, and both sides, the tolex is tough, I can literally just go on and on about this cab.

It is THE BEST cab I've ever played through, hands down.

Thanks for the input on the 412...I saw that one too...Just am normally conditioned over the years to think 10's and 15's for bass...have never played through 12's.
Will have to give that one consideration as well. thanks!!

Just to add, about the PH1200 cab, what those guys said about it being designed more by looks than science, it's all true. Mesa is an awesome builder, but like ANY business, they will build what people will buy. And many people think that a cab with 4 10's and a 15 is the "ideal" cab, IT IS NOT. Any of their big cabs, 610, 810, 412, will blow the 1200 away sonically. Just food for thought.

Still getting the hang of the head's weird gain/volume setup so I'll definitely be poking around this thread for pointers...
