Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

An 8x10 cab is an awesome thing to play through, and the WalkAbout through it is tremendous.

In my case even then it didn't have quite enough clean power. An SVT would've fared better, due to its different characteristics.

We're talking loud band here though. Real loud, not that "I can hang with two 100w half-stacks using a 2x10 while people in the cafe are chatting over drinks" so-called 'loud'.

Gear's a combination of things. A WalkAbout into a large cab like an old-school sealed 2x15, 6x10 or 8x10 is fun worth having.
Ditto much of my band experience- my WA pushed through a 610 sounds freaky good, but in enough situations I’ve found it to be working right at the end of its useable range and too compressed/congested for my taste so I’ve stopped trying to bring it to my louder gigs (though sometimes I might prefer its tonal character to my Prodigy)

I have frequently used my WA with a Bergantino NV610 which has a pretty similar vibe to the 810. It does not provide the same SPLs as an SVT, but it's worth noting that I haven't run into a situation where the WA with that cab isn't enough for what I needed. That can happen with my Berg 212 though.

There are a variety of reasons for the difference between the response of the SVT and the WA, and I will forgo even mentioning them for the sake of this thread and the people who read it :D but I will say that anyone who truly loves the WA should run one into a cab of that style at least once. It's pretty awesome! :woot:
Yep I am another happy NV610 user- it’s the one constant piece of gear I’ve used for some 12 years and seems to be able to coax the best tone for my tastes from whatever amp I put through it, including a Walkabout. In fact I think the Walkabout and NV610 are a special sort of complement, as that cab tightens up the bottom of the Walkabout and focuses the midrange well at high volumes. Definitely enough for *most* gigs these days where you don’t need a lot of deeper bass or Entwistle volumes!

...Does Mesa have a "take a TB'er to work" day? ...

I tried that once but no bueno.

Fortunately, Lagunitas Taproom was near by.

Thanks buddy for your comments, it is all interesting.

Once I played with a drum, two Marshalll half stack, with only a old GK 400rb (200w.) on a very efficient 2x15 loaded with FANE spkrs that was already there, very rock gig, I kept a good memory of that gig regarding the bass sound, that what suggest me this discussion.

^^^^^^^^^The Vintage Stallion will definitively respond, but methinks yes.

I hadn't played my Walkabout head in a while....haven't been playing nearly enough lately.....it was love at first pluck all over again.....I may just take advantage of "market forces" and pick up a backup used, original Walkabout when the new new, Walkabout "Stomp" incarnation starts arriving in earnest.

I haven't owned a WA for about 6 years.
I too asked for a 1kW Walkabout.
Decided not to pre-order the WD800 as I'm not sure that my taste in tone is the same as it was back then.
Playing one in a store will be the decision maker.

I owned a mail order antique car business and hated returns. I'm not comfortable ordering gear if I think there is a decent possibility of a return (my issue and maybe not yours).

Bottom line; I find all Mesa amps to be high quality as well as GK, older Ampegs, etc.
I'm confident the WD800 will not make you play better or get your band signed quicker.
It always comes down to the player, and a good one can make any professional amp sound great.
OTOH, it is rewarding when an amp, cabinet, and bass allows you to paint a sonic picture that is inspiring and just flat our sounds great in the mix!

Can someone remind me of something. Is there some reason a matching handle can't be added to the side of Mesa Scout extension cabinet? The thing I hate about the Scout 15 extension is it is awkward as hell to carry that box with the one handle. I seem to recall someone wanting a matching side handle on a custom shop order and even then they wouldn't do it. If I drilled in those two screws, is there something they hit in there is why there is just the one handle on the one side? It makes me never want to take the cab out.

I have found that the best way for me to carry my 115 Scout is just bear hug the damn thing and take off, have to do some S turns to see where you're going ...like in a vintage taildragger. It's a clumsy thing to deal with.

That was me.....the Mesa CS wouldn't do it, but they said that it was simply policy not to make any structural changes to any products.....they didn't say it was a bad idea.... I never tried it and don't know if there's a specific reason it might "end badly". I sold it.......there are so many superb options that are less bulky and lighter.....YMMV.

Both sides are the same. Open it up and see for yourself.

You can install a handle easily on the other side, or on top, if you want to.

For me it's easy to use just the handle, and maybe another hand underneath or on the side. Sometimes on my shoulder.
