Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

I've never tried mixing, I've always replaced in pairs.
As I want "cleaner," that's been the type of thing I've tried, as opposed to known crunchier tubes.
So, I used JJ long plate 12ax7's until I got my new blackface, which came with sovtek long plates that seemed just as nice to me.
I've heard that the tung sol reissues to clean and 3-D feeling pretty well also.

I didn't mix, either, BUT, I think with the WA it would actually make sense (if you wanted to go to that level of detail anyway), since the tubes play such completely different roles. I prolly wouldn't bother with that kind of detail myself, but it is valid.

depends on what kind of "quality control" they employ...or don't;)

i don't think it's as drastic as lucky vs lemon, but perhaps more like "small variances on flavor A versus lemon."

Funny you mention looking for a cleaner tube in that I was surprised how tubey the amp sounds with the gain at a minimum and the master up. Not distorted but not anywhere close to the surgical clarity (read harsh to me) that many of the tube driven SS amps that are available. Wondered if I would ever have call for something cleaner.

My 2-band Stingray with the EQ flatish doesn't have lots of output and I was using the passive input (has the active / passive switch). Have never compared a Sadowsky to a standard Fender for relative output level. Which input do you active players use?

I like the way my amp is the way I got it. Bought it used so I dont know if it has the factory pre tubes or something different. Everyone has commented positive on the tone of it. I leave it at my church gig I do twice a week and its paired to an Epifani 2x10 NYC. I found the preamp eq to be useful and musical. I like everything about it except the DI which I suspect needs repair. Very happy w it. That being said, would be cool to try some different tubes for fun

Hey everyone. I've had my WA Scout 12 for about 4 months and due to not being completely comfortable with the eq, have only gigged it once. I had a long rehearsal/audition for a new band yesterday. The bassist I will be replacing was also their shaking off the rust for his farewell show next month.

I had my trusty, Fralin-Loaded Jazz Bass and he was playing a Danelectro with 3 lipstick pu's. We kept switching off and on, which was interesting to say the least, and really liked what I heard tonewise when he was playing and I was sitting 15 feet away in front of the amp. When I was playing and standing really close to the amp, it just seemed kind of slow. I know the name of the game with the WA is thick and fat, but any longtime owners have any tips on quickening up the sound a little bit? I have a new blackface version, so as far as eq points and boost amounts are concerned, the "clock" system would be greatly appreciated.

I really want to love this amp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
