Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

I think so, but:
i think the berg 322 is gonna want more power: that's not a super efficient cab, right?
i know a 15/6 is gonna want more power: mine never felt "right" without at least 800 watts hitting it.
i know other people say different, just sayin' how i felt.

with two diesel 115's, it killed, but, those were big heavy boxes, and "an older tone'' than I liked. i really need a horn.

with the LDS 1212/66; it killed, and those mid drivers went plenty high.
with the Henry 8x8; it also kills;)

with my current LDS 2x8's and 4x8, it's plenty clear: did that last night. you could for sure hear the stainless rounds poppin' on my sadowsky!!

depends what kind of tone you want, but a more modern cab will sound more modern;)
how much so will very by what high freq components are in there.

it's never gonna be a mega clean, clean, aggressive head like say the M9, of GK stuff...certainly will never be swr-like.
but, with the right cabs, and the right basses can be plenty clean and clear for me.

Yeah, good call, although the SVT was enough for some gigs, that cab got me into the pre/power wars. Will have to compare the WA to pre/power rig.

Didn't know the 15/6 is power hungry (at least in your experiences)

Sounds like high effeciency or multiple cabs is a solution

BTW - The whole goal was to sound like tubes in a lighter format but having 1 single lightish cabinet is also a requirement

Any specific experiences with neo 2x12's or 4x10's with the WA?

Jim;
try cutting para bass at about 50hz, and leave the shelving bass flat. I run "passive" mids at about 10 oclock, and have para eq set at about 400hz, but generally leave it alone.
I have para treble set at about 2khz, and boosted a tad, and shelving treble flat.

Very good suggestions: sounds different, but good and works well with both cabinets; I've actualy started liking this better than what I had been using at home but like a touch more passive mids than you.
I have not been a fan of a quasi-parametric (or fully for that matter) on MI amps; they usually sound honkey and/or ringy & often times the "Q" of the filter is not to my liking; night & day difference from decent outboard gear.

The WA para is very nice and the best I've heard built into an amp; very high fi and smooth; musical & also very effective; it only takes a very small twist to get a noticeable & desired change; another good reason why this 300 watt amp is so expensive I would suspect. Bad on me and old prejudices for not spending time with it earlier.

Think it has just enough power for the 322 and will bring this beast to the next appropriate gig for a try.

For the time being, I'll install some rack ears and run it a bunch. BTW, it's not like the gig was bad; tone was decent but not PERFECT; the never ending quest...

Jim C - one thought - the WA really pairs well with the VT Bass pedal. I set the WA for a phat old school tone (pretty much any eq setting achieves this!) and use that for most of my band's material, but when the song calls for a sharper piano-like tone I kick in the VT. Sharp but still with that warm tube goodness - not clinical at all yet still cuts through.

I use my WA Scout 1x15 on most gigs and I bring a 3/4 plywood board for underneath, seems to help sometimes. For louder jobs I pull the WA out and use with 2 1x12 DeltaLite's with cutom cabs I had built. The Lites are 48Hz-4KHz and these cabs are tuned down to about 50-60Hz.Good top end and serious punch!Only 13 lbs. using 1/2 in.Birch plywood.I use this in a 2 guitar & keys group and I can put the hurt on them :)I use my SR5,DW Combustion and a Tune TWB43(killer 4 string) could not be happier.Hope this helps.

Changed the amp jewel to a green for the holidays and noticed that the indicator light dims when pushed much like the old Kustom 100 I just sold. It will dim slighly depending on hard hard you play and especially on low notes. Not a problem but an observation and wondered if anyone else's amp does this.

Just spent an hour playing mindless bass lines at medium loud volume; really like this amp and sorry I waited this long to try it!
BTW, many thanks for all of your suggestions and observations; they are greatly appreciated.

Yeah, mine have all done the light thing.
Especially when pistol whipping it at 2 ohms;)

I've changed all my power light jewels to red, cause that's what my old Fenders came with, and everything else will always looks wrong to me.
Yeah, I'm old.

I've paired my WA head with several different cabs.
Powerhouse 410- loud and proud
Powerhouse 210/15- much the same.
Deisel 215- could get a bit muffled, but could be eq'd to sound awesome.
Epifani UL 212- loud, and maybe a little too clean for my tastes.
GB Uber 212- as perfect a bass tone as I could ever hope for. loud, fat, warm, and still punchy as hell.
GB Uber212/Aggie DB112- my go to "I need louder" rig. Tasty.
Aggie DB112 alone- not my cup of tea, for some odd reason.

I've convinced my g/f that "seasoned vet" is where it's at...
(and I'm not talking about time in the military)

Allen, I've replaced the red jewel in your honor; looks way tougher than green

"old guys are smart"

I dunno...I can't be all that smart, cause I still think the Henry 8x8, at 110lbs, is a great cab with the Walkabout.

That sounds like older and dumber to me;)

It really does sound great though!
It also takes up most of the back of my Scion Xb.

I've got an older, 2 input silver WA,

& IT has a RED jewel light - as standard methinks.

My 1st amp- an OZ made VASE BASSMAN 120 had 2 jewel lights(to go one up on the Fender of the day I s'pose :D )
It had an AMBER one for when on STANDBY & the a RED one on the other side for when 'ON'. So BOTH were on when the amp was running & you were playing. :smug:
