Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

Just wanted everyone know that with the help of this thread, I did the fan mod to my WA. Wired it in medium speed which is nearly silent. Very happy -- thanks. Used this fan, purchased from Amazon:

Well-my Walkabout has a problem and it's not the pre tubes. Going back to Mesa this week for repair. Still hoping it'll produce sufficient volume on my TB153 to make my M6 superfluous, but not expecting that to be the case. Will report back when the dust settles.

No worries. I'll file it under "if that's my biggest trouble, then it's a good day". Mesa will make it right and I'm fortunate enough to still have a killer rig to play (M6/TB153).
My passive Am Std J5 is overdriving the WA even with the gain at 8 or 9 o'clock. All headroom is gone and it has gotten a bit worse, in spite of new pre tubes. Maybe a capacitor has blown? I'll let Mesa figure it out.

Sorry to hear the news; here's to a quick and inexpensive repair.
In the mean time, any SVT heads in the neighborhood to try with the Avatar?
As you know, I find the 2 similar in clean tones as well as output power.

There'll be no charge other than shipping as it's under warranty. No SVT around here, but I do have a GB Shuttle 3 with the same power rating as the WA.....never thought about it before but I might as well see how loud that gets-should be same as the WA.......

The Shuttle 3 cannot drive the 153 to anywhere near it's potential (just tried it), so the WA won't either. I'll keep the Carbine for the 153 and most gigs but I will keep the WA as well.

Don't put so much weight in the specs as published. It's been my experience a WA can significantly outperform a Shuttle 3 in perceivable "loudness".

Simply magical! I've had my walkabout (blackface) for a week, and gigged it last night for the first time -- in a small bar with a 3 acoustic guitars and bongos band. The PA is not particularly strong, so even though they all go through the PA, they prefer that I bring my own rig. I previously played an mpulse 600 into a Bergie HT112ER, and got very nice tone but tweaking was critical and touchy running at relatively low volumes.

Enter the Walkabout. Set gain at about 11:00, master pretty low, and did some quick tweaks to EQ that took less than a minute -- I was set. For the night. Brilliant, lively tone, incredibly responsive to technique and setttings on my bass (alembic MK sig.), I could change sounds without touching the amp all night long. It was the easiest setup I've ever had, and the other players kept turning and grinning at me. Unlike other amps I've used, this little guy just seems to fill a room with beautiful bass, not just cutting through the mix but forming an integral part of the mix, its backbone, in a way I've not experienced often.

And it's absolutely fantastic to just play and sound good no matter what I did. It gave me such freedom to do little subtle things, or dig in with some thunder, when it all came out so clearly and distinctly. I love this thing!

We know.:D

I did find something interesting -- while it would be nice to have a tuner out, with mute, I simply plugged my tuner into the effects send, which mutes the amp (since there's nothing in the return), and then threw the defeat switch to unmute. It was trivial to just reach in the back to throw that switch. So in a way, it has a built-in tuner out with mute, so long as I'm not using the effects loop for, well, effects.

On another note, I've been thinking about the scout 12 cab (not the combo) and wondering how that would be different from my Berg HT112ER, and/or how it would pair up with the Berg if I were to bring both (prob. get an 8 ohm version). Any thoughts how these cabs sound different and work together?

Clever... Did you really use the Send or the Return? Usually it's the Return that interrupts the signal flow (so one can use the Send for something else).
