Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

Good point, but yes, I plugged the tuner into the send with nothing in the return and that does mute the amp. At least it does to mine. Can anyone confirm this behavior? I gues it means you can't send elsewhere without coming back in the return if you want the speaker outs to be working. Or am I missing something?
 
The vast majority of amps lack a parallel effects loop option, so using the send only will interrupt the signal to the power amp & speakers. Using the return only will bypass the preamp and EQ and go straight to the power amp at full volume, as is the case with the WalkAbout.

The amp sounds great with one Epi 1x15 UL. The louder you go the more you'll probably want to trim the bass EQ and the mid EQ should suffice to fill that hole & parametrics can be left flat or used to work the room. This might vary some with two of the cabs together, especially in the mids.

This amp sounds great with any decent input and cabs.
 
Its a bummer having to ship off your amp but good to know it will be made right under warranty. I waiting awhile to have my M9 upgraded and returned but it was worth it. I still think the Walkabout is the single nicest sounding bass amp I have ever heard.

Well-my Walkabout has a problem and it's not the pre tubes. Going back to Mesa this week for repair. Still hoping it'll produce sufficient volume on my TB153 to make my M6 superfluous, but not expecting that to be the case. Will report back when the dust settles.

What can I expect to pay for a used Walkabout, head only?

Older models (brn lettering or blk lettering without the updates (toggle switches for active/passive and fx bypass) about 4-500 shipped depending on shape. Newer silver/blk lettering with toggles maybe 550-600 and newest blackface maybe 750 BUT the retail prices just jumped 10% so maybe the used ones will as well. Saw a minty used one with bag at bassnw.com for 699-if that's shipped it's fair IMO.
 
Here's a picture of a recording session I just ran on a bassist playing through my Mesa Walkabout. In the red, we have the waveform of the miked cab (with an SM57, touching the grillcloth, on-axis). In the green, we have the DI signal from the Walkabout.

The gain was at noon, the instrument was a passive P with flats, and the EQ knobs were all straight noon.

It strikes me that there is a very strange signal DI coming out from the Walkabout. It made a delay of about 84 samples required to get the DI signal from imparting a considerable amount of phase cancellation on the initial miked signal. But, even then, the two signals suffered a noteworthy phase incoherence.

Moreover, the DI signal is highly asymmetrical in a way that the miked cabinet is not, leading me to wonder how phase coherent the DI signal is. I know that Radial makes a big deal over the importance of phase coherence in a DI box, and this is my first hand experience seeing why.

While I could eventually bump up the summed miked and DI signal with delay, the character of the blended tone became sounded a little foreign to me -- something different in kind from either of the two signals, as opposed to 'the attack emphasized by the DI, and the tone emphasized by the cab', which we're told in recording classes is the benefit of summing the signals.

Does this matter on a daily basis? No. The DI sounds good. But this is a not inconsiderable problem with blending a direct signal with a miked signal in a recording setting. Live rock show? I can't imagine it would be a problem. But a quiet jazz recital, with top-shelf reinforcement gear? Maybe.

I really, really wish I had some comparison data from my different recording sessions, but I don't. All I can say is that I've never had this kind of issue with my Glockenklang or Aguilar gear. (The Glockenklang DI was something especially godly.)

Not sure I get your point. I was recording the Walkabout Scout combo. While it might be that my combo was 'miswired' by Mesa when I got it, I'm not sure that would change much of my point. Look at the graphics. Reverse the polarity of the red signal. There's still a strange phase relationship between the signals.

If you're talking about the monitoring speakers in my studio, their wiring is irrelevant to the waveform.
 
(a) It's not simply a matter of reversing the phase. *Look at the wave offset: the width of the first compression -- following the initial rarefaction -- of the DI signal.* It is not the same width as the first rarefaction on the miked signal. Ergo, flipping the polarity won't solve the issue.

(b) Mic and DI signals *are not* as a matter of necessity always out of phase. (At least, if you're referring to a 180 degree flip.) That's just untrue. It's not like the relationship (that generally occurs) between miking the bottom and the top of a snare drum.

(c) I'm trying to urge that this isn't a simple phase inversion problem. And, moreover, the whole point of offsetting the start of the DI signal is to compensate for phase cancellation in the first place.

(d) I've just seen this phase issue to be more of a problem with the Walkabout DI *in my experience* than other gear I have recorded with (Aguilar, Glockenklang, Radial, ART). I wager that this might be a case of audible 'phase distortion' with the Walkabout DI.

Phase distortion is most readily heard in the bass frequencies due to the longer wavelengths. As the phase distortion increases, the bass becomes muddy and indistinct. A preamplifier’s ability to transfer a signal without phase distortion is one of the most difficult challenges in circuit design.
