Surely the whole original idea of the "Walkabout" is its portability. You don't walk about with a rack - particularly in this age of lightweight micros. Also..I can't see them adding another yet another 2 space rack mount 600ish watt amp to their line-up. Something's gotta give. Sure we can hear the differences but I'd say most people couldn't. They would perceive the M-Pulse and WA600 as the same thing.
I'd disagree in that that the WA case and front pannel are not that durable or protected, and, if you drop that much cash for an amp, one probably doesn't want to bugger it up. I bought mine with the idea of carrying it like my LMII and quickly changed thinking after scracthing it up. The headcase they make is huge and heavy and the rack ears add considerably to the width. IMO, the existing pre with twice the mosfet power, bigger ouput transformer, beefier power supply, fan, etc would fit in a 19" 2-space package.
It would be a shame if the M-Pulse sales were based on the preception of a 600 watt WA, and that most were resold based on disappointment.
I still believe that it is all about how long it would take for sales of this new amp to generate enough profit to pay for R&D, tooling, and manufacturing costs. Can't blame them if that is their reasoning.
Lastly, Mesa really is a guitar amp company; don't have any access to sales numbers but would think it might be a 10:1 ratio of guitar to bass products; probably good business to focus on the big sellers to stay healthy in this economy.
Maybe someday we will really know the truth behind their thinking.
