Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

Before I took delivery of the Walkabout mini stack, I had read up on the measurements of the two cabs and head cabinet. By what I read on the Mesa site it said that the head cab was wider than the cabs. I thought well that is kinda crazy but I oh well. I'll see what looks best when I get them here.
So when everything was out of the boxes the head fit perfect on top of either cab. Must be a typo or I'm messed up. could be the latter.
Just thought I would mention this in case anyone else was thinking the same as myself before they bought the head cab.

A Walkabout stack that I put together for a project that unfortunately didn't materialize. I'm playing guitar (boo! hiss!) in the band I'm currently in so this one awaits my next bass gig. I considered selling it but after plugging into it today, I knew I would regret letting it go.

And whoever said that a 4x10 and a 1x15 don't work well together hasn't heard this rig. HUGE TONE, to die for...:D

with a new 4ohm Scout Radiator 1x12. Going to try it on the gig tonight.

I have used a Radiator 1x15 in the past as an extension for my WA, but I think this new 1x12 will be great.

FWIW, it seems as if the new Radiator cab is a bit lighter than the older ones. Is this due to some driver change by Mesa by any chance ?

Thanks to all who encouraged me to stick with an all Mesa set-up.

Let us know how it sounded on the gig.

Let us know how it sounded on the gig.

well, not surprisingly it sounded great. As mentioned, I have had a Scout 1x15 extension in the past and I really liked it. I found that while the 1x15 did add a serious level of volume/coverage, I also had to be somewhat careful with low end bloom with the WA+Scout 15 combination. I did not find as much of that with 12 last night. Must be associated with the matching cabs.

I also got reacquainted with using the crossover controls on the two cabs. It's such a nice feature to these cabs to be able to set one to 5k(full) and the other to either 4K or 3K to get a touch different flavor out of each one. I tend to roll the horn controls off just a bit on both cabs as I am not looking for a ton of snap up top (so called "modern/old school" tone objective).

It was quite a treat to have the new cab for the gig last night - really added the beef that the single WA 1x12 can't manage.

Hey guys; have taken about 1 year off from this forum to finish up a 20 year marriage with a 1-time very large pay out.
Have sold a pile of gear and need a new cabinet for my WA.
Currently playing a J-bass, WA and Berg 322 at home; dream rig but I can't carry the cabinet very far.
Also have a TL606 that just not effecient enough for some gigs.
Want a single cabinet solution; approx 50lbs but would go 60 if i had to; also need very effecient and I would suspect 4 ohms.
Am thinking a 2x12 is probaly the best soultion but wanted to check in with you all as I'm not up on any new gear.
What brands would you recommend and is the Thunderchild effecient enough to be a 1 cab solution with 2 guitars, bass, drum, and keyboard?

Awww geez, sorry Jim...

To answer your q: that's kind of a "how loud is loud" deal.
When I had the TC112 for BGM, I did do a couple of jobs with it, but, used the MBFusion, which is a bunch more watts.

I'd advise you to check out a GK Neo 212, if you can
50lbs, very movable, and pretty dang loud, even though it's an 8 ohm cab.

Also, two GK Neo 112 works nicely, makes a nice vertical line array, and is 4 ohms. I believe NOLAbass runs this.
The GK stuff is very cost effective.

I ordered a TC112 and 115, the 112 should be here Wed, I'm not sure wehn 115's will actually ship.
It's my hope that the stack and Walkabout at 2 ohms will be pretty freakin' loud...we'll see.
Pretty expensive experiment....

I know there are several guys who like the Berg AE212, but, that's a buy it used option now.
I've not heard of anyone has tried the new Berg HD212.....

I finally got a chance to take some time and give my "new to me WA stack" a go yesterday. This mini stack rocks big time. It will handle any gig I'm going to do for sure. Tried a few tube options and was surprised how the WA reacts to different preamp tubes. The GT-ecc83 stayed clean the longest as I cranked the gain. Didn't like that. Ended up with a EH 12ax7 on the pre and a JJ driving the outputs. I've had a bunch of amps in the past 40 years. Acoustic, Fender. Traynor, Yorkville and Peavey. But this WA is way above them all. It makes my Fender MM4 come alive. First time I like the sound of it in the passive mode. I a/b'd the scout cab and the scout ext cab and the ext cab does seem to have a bit more bottom end to it. If I was going to use just one cab I'd use the ext cab with the head.
I'll get some pics up a bit later today.

Also consider the GB NeoX 212. 53lbs and it sounds great.

Based on the above criteria, I'd look for a Berg AE410. It's a "light" 62 pounds and sounds GREAT with a Walkabout. It's the one cabinet I have remorse over selling. It was just too big for what I needed but the sound was glorious.
