Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

I know there are several guys who like the Berg AE212, but, that's a buy it used option now.
I've not heard of anyone has tried the new Berg HD212.....

I have had an HD212 since about Halloween, and it is just amazing. It's quite possibly my favorite cab outside of the Berg IP stuff. But, it's heavier than Jim wants...

I like the 2x GK Neo112-II suggestion. Or, if you want a more vintage vibe, two Ampeg SVT-210AV's go great with the WalkAbout.

My current favorite lightweight cab(s) to pair with the WalkAbout, though, are two of Roger Baer's ML-112's. They are a bit pricey, but not unfairly so, and they are very sensitive, so they definitely make the most of the WalkAbout's 300 watts. Tonally, they match very well, too.

Thanks for the kind words on the personal issue.
Can I assume that a 2x10 would be pushed really hard for this application?

Tom, I'm assuming that the Thunderchild (while reported to be an amazing cabinet) would not be a good match due to effeciency?
I know you guys are familiar with the 12" version but not sure if you've used the 15" model.

There haven't been many TC115's shipped yet.
I ordered both TC112 and 115, hoping for a good Walkabout stack; but, they're not here yet.
I also have a 12/6/1+12sub setup coming.

The TC are 4 ohm cabs, making a 2 ohm stack;
The 12/6/1+12sub are 8 ohm cabs making a 4 ohm stack.

I can tell you this:
The 12/6/1 alone with the Walkabout is not impressive in terms of gig volume.

I don't think any of the LF type driver are particularly efficient when compared to some of the non-LF types out there.

Again: I'd really recommend trying some of the GK Neo12 cabs with your Walkabout...

I would think so, yes.

Well, the TC112 certainly sounds great with the WalkAbout, but because of the lower efficiency, you are right, it's not going to be very loud. That being said, Duke has a 1x15 (the TC115) coming out which might be a great match. He says it'll do with 300w what the TC112 will do with 500w.

And it's nice to see you back here, though I am sorry to hear about the cause behind your absence. :(

Chef,

I can't wait to hear how you like the TC's when you get them. That review in the latest Bass Gear Mag had me experiencing some real gas pains!

The Walkabout into 2 GK NEO 112 II's is a nice combo. Plenty of volume, incredibly portable, and the WA really warms up the cabs to my liking (I did not like them with a GK MB500 for instance). I won't say they are the be all end all, but you can buy a brand new pair for $700, which is the cost of some other brands single 12's.

I really like my Walkabout Scout 12 tonally but find it a real bitch to move. Plus, I have to mount and unmount the head. I'd really like a single 12" 4ohm cab to then put the head in the headcase. Easier to switch between the single and double 12 setup. I was thinking WA Scout ext cab, but the TC and Baer stuff has me intrigued.

Greetings walkabouters! I've had my 12" combo since late 2009. I don't think I'll ever want or need another amp besides this one. I've tried the m-pulse 600 and big block and just cannot duplicate the organic tone this little lady pushes out. I'm thinking of getting a second one to run as a grit channel and two extension cabinets.

This has likely been covered at least once in the megathreads, bu a search hasn't yielded much.

WA + EA Wizzy (10, 12, 12M)?

The wizzys are supposed to be pretty efficient. Good tonal match for doubling?

why'd you move from that....?

Overall volume was still not enough for my dive bar gigs without PA. As you know, I have struggled for a while trying to find a Walkabout cab setup with enough cone area to get loud at a weight I am willing to haul. I have now accepted that for my volume needs, there's no 50 lb cab solution with the walkabout. The Scout 12 combo on top of the LDS 15/6 was plenty loud enough, and I'm sure the 15/6, 12/6 stack will be as well, but I don't expect the 12/6 for another coupla weeks. In contrast to your experience, I find the 15/6 cab to be reasonably sensitive, even with only the Walkabout's 165 watts @ 8 Ohms. That low wattage obviously won't even scratch the surface of the volume potential of the cab, but it seems to get "165 watts through a 15" loud to my ear. When the 12/6 arrives I'll try the WA on the pair of LDS cabs, but even for my very infrequent gigs, I have trouble rationalizing
schlepping a 55 lb 15/6, a 40 lb 12/6 and a 15 lb head, when the 55lb cab and 28 lb M9 could provide more sonic devastation than I could ever use.

How does it compare to the 12/6 15/6 with the WA?

I don't have the 12/6 yet, but the 8 Ohm 15/6 on its' own is about the same volume as the pair of 8 Ohm 12s. The 15/6 also goes lower, clearer and cleaner. It's much less old school in tone than the Wizzies. Those Wizzies are amazing though-perfect form factor (about 30 lbs each), coax "tweeters" with a bit of a muted top (not much sheen). I think that after hearing the real content below 60Hz that the LDS (or fEarful) can deliver (that I never hear in other cabs), without any compromise over the rest of the spectrum, I have become addicted. They're not for everyone's taste, but wow, they limbo under a bar few other boxes can touch.

Thanks.

Did you find the WA had enough output to drive the wizzys to their potential?

Definitely. They are fairly typical for a "stock" 112 and won't take much over 100 true watts without compression anyway. Same as pretty much any other 12 not based on the 3012LF super driver. I am embarrassed to say I have owned the Scout 12, Powerhouse 12, Wizzy 12, Epi UL2-112, Neox 12, Shuttle 12 and numerous others. IME, what Bill FitzM says is true, ie that the thermal tolerance ratings popularly quoted are meaningless and that cabs stop getting louder and begin to strain faaaaar before they reach the point at which their voice coils break. The cabs based on the long x-max woofers, however, are another breed entirely.

No. I am staying with this 1 head. I can't get back on that rollercoaster; life's too short, and besides it sounds great,
This is light years ahead of carrying the SVT-CL.
I'm gonna stick with this WA and find a 50 lb, 2x12 (or something close) that sounds like a big Berg cabinet

(unless of course you really think I'm wrong about the above)
If only I could make my SVP / power amp rig sound more like the SVT or WA; neither the Berg or TL sound right with this rig :hmm:
