Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

The MPulse 600 and M6 are very, very different sounding heads; at least to me.
I did not care for the MPulse 600 at all.
Didn't need the extra band of para eq, didn't like the percieved by me lack of top end clarity, didn't need the compressor (tho it worked very nicely).

The M6 sounds heftier (flat), cleaner, has crisper top end, and meets my tone goals for dang near everything.

I'm coming from a Kern/CA-9 that I sold last year promarily to downsize weight-wise. Now running either a Markbass SA450 into an Acme Low B4 or a Markbass CMD121p with a Berg HT112 as an extension. Only recently have I come to miss that tube front end, thus the acquistion of Pickles' Mpulse 600. But looks like I can get a Fathom for $999 so I'll probably get it and A/B the two and flip the other. What's the weight of the M6? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Not even any specs on the Mesa manual found on their website. I assume the Fathom = Carbine in every respect.

24 pounds. Yes, Fathom is just from the earlier production runs of the M6, prior to the name change (due to some other company having the rights to the Fathom name). Per Chef's comment, the M6 will be closer in vibe to your SA450 (although much louder and with just a touch of that tube tone in the pre). The MPulse600 is much more 'classic tube'... big bloomy lows, quite a bit of give in the feel, etc. To my ear, the M6 is a hybrid that just gives a slight 'tube flavor' to a powerful, tight, quick, bright SS power section. The MPulse600, again IMO and IME, does all it can to emulate a full tube amp... softer, bigger, fatter, warmer, darker... still very clean, but it screams 'I'm trying to sound like a tube amp'.

Edit: If you happen to think the MPuls600 is 'too much tube' and the M6/Fathom is 'too little tube', also give the new Hartke LH500 or 1000 a try. Amazing amps, and more of that 'old school' Fender tone block tone... similar to the Alembic pre through a SS power amp to my ear.

Why is a reasonable Q.

Two days since mine left for warranty repair.
I hope they can make it shutdown, and figger why.
I was not able to reproduce the symptoms "on command."
Just, "every few days, it would snap off for no reason, then wake right back up."
Didn't matter: what bass, active, passive 4 string, 5 string, what cab, what ohm load...just....curious.

I was never able to make Tom's Fathom misbehave under any circumstance.

Hard to diagnose, prolly.

When I sent mine back (for presumably the same problem), I gave them a detailed description both over the phone and through email about how I was able to recreate the problem by pushing down lightly on a certain part of the power amp/ heatsink circuit board. Hopefully this gave them somewhere to start in looking for the problem (assuming they didn't already know about it, and were just acting surprised about it). My new one hasn't had a single issue yet (I even attempted to make it act like my old one, just in case!), so I assume it is not common to all the amps...

I'm not smart enough to open it and start pushing on bad solder joints...but, they've had a few of these with issues and are probably starting to get more familiar than they want to be with failure points...

I am willing to bet that these failures are attributable to 'purchased parts' rather that Mesa design flaws.
Yeah, I know......Mesa is weird......but I stand by my theory. Been there too many times myself, 'on the job'.
We will see.

Had a gig last night. Only thing mic'd were vocals and the kick drum. Weather was crappy so I just brought the 1 PH112. Driven with the Fathom, I had no problems being heard against a Peavy 212 and a Fender Deville 4x10. Here is a video clip, if you use decent computer speakers or headphones you can hear me quite well. Youtube killed the Video quality in the upload, but the sound is still pretty good.

Well, Chef mine just got back to Mesa yesterday so hopefully between yours and mine one of them will shut down and they'll be able to figure it out.

One thing to keep an eye on is the power cord - mine has vibrated loose a couple of times from sitting on the cab, causing the amp to cut out.

I read the article in Bass Gear Magazine which along with the M6 also reviewed the Mesa 212 and gave the 212 a big thumbs up. I tried the M6 with my Bergie AE410 and it sounded pretty damn incredible! Has anyone used the M6 with any of the Mesa Powerhouse speakers?

I played my M6 at rehearsal this weekend with a Powerhouse 115. It's a pretty bright room -- I had to turn the treble down to get the right sound with my Mike Lull M5V. Pretty impressive tone, but a little too midrangy!

I'm hoping to get a chance to play it with my Powerhouse Vintage 1000 soon. That should be truly amazing! In my home office (bedroom size), that combination is really punchy!

I tried the mesa 210 and the Berg Ae210 with the M6 in a store. The Mesa was more aggressive, but in a musical way. Very nice!
