Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

im thinking about adding a alesis microlimiter for my effects and i want to put it in a rack with my m6 carbine. right now i have the carbine in a 2u skb case and it works great but what case should i get to add the alesis unit with it?

i've heard that the 3u skb racks run hot with the m6 so putting another unit even though its only a 1/3 space would probably be worse.

any recommendations?

thanks

Bjazzman,

I don't recommend running a compressor in the FX loop of the M6. The FX loop signal is affected by the master volume of the amp. Weird, I know, and I struggled with it with my nice rack compressor, but unless you a set it and forget it guy then it is somewhat problematic. More volume, more signal to the compressor, more squash. You get the point, but the tone is so great I opted to ditch the rack compressor and pick up a nice pedal compressor for when I need it. My M6 was completed after they made mods to the vents in the cover and I have never had heat problems in my gator 3 space shallow. I have had all three spaces filled before and still no problems. Here is a pic.

Ok.
M6 or M9, tryin to decide witch one to order up for testing. Don`t think I need the power of the M9 nor the extra eq, but that compressor looks nice..
I went w/ the M9. I know I won't need the power but I do use a comp. and the switchable EQ is going to get alot of work w/ the stuff I play. For price difference I figured it's almost like getting the extra power for free.

I have at least thought about dropping my M6 for a used M9 just for the compressor, but I have the pedal for the selectable mid functions and the M9 can't do that, so I just went with a really nice pedal compressor. If you think you are going to need compressor, and you don't want to use a pedal compressor, then go with the M9, because using a rack compressor in the M6 FX loop is cumbersome at best (IMO of course).

I had a long talk with the designer of the M6/9 heads Friday. I may have made some headway on at least the mute as well as maybe the pre/post. Not sure about the efx loop vs master control, but we talked... oh yes... we talked... :)

Yup, and let me just add that those guys from M/B are a quality hang. Dan was very receptive to all we had to say, and believe you me, between Vic, Tom Lees (our new Technical Editor) and myself, we chewed Dan's ear (and Doug's, and Randall's) pretty hard. :smug: Good people, all the way around.

Tom.

What could possibly be the rationalization for this?

I like Mesa, but they're prone to some kooky design quirks / errors. The Walkabout's supposed passive mid boost comes to mind.

Weird as that "passive" mid control might be, it's a unique, and very powerful dial on that amp. Took a bit of adjustment, but since learning how to use it, I find it indispensable now.

Some of the quirks on the M6 I would attribute to economics IMO. I think of the compressor of the M9 and think the guys laying out have to go "it has to go before the master control". On the M6 I assume it was just easier (ie more econimical) to add the FX loop after the master otherwise it is a just an oops thing, which I doubt is the case. Not sure on some of the quirks, but the tone can get you past them, trust me.

Saluki: my updated Fathom also failed. They sent me a hot off the assembly line M6 that has run dead stable no matter what sort of stupid things I do to it.

The M9 intrigues me because This Is America And Bigger Is Just Plain Better.

And while I might have occasional use for the graphic eq, I never, ever run the M6 harder than "input at noon, master at 9 o'clock;" and I've pretty well settled on "voice #2, with bass and treble flat, and mids pushed to about 2 o'clock."

Chef,

With my recently acquired AE410;), I might like setting 2 as well, but I used 3 for the most part with the EPI UL410 and 4 if I really wanted to punch thru:bassist:. Are you using #2 with your Epi's?

Alan, I just played through an M9/PH610 last Saturday night at a benefit. The two bands after us were going to use their own rigs, but after our set, they asked if they could play through the Big Boogie as well. Man, that rig kicked a lot of can! :bassist: :bassist:
