Metal with a horn section/Jazz Metal

The Urge is somewhat like Metal with a Horn section, but with some reggae, and ska. They broke up a few years ago; you can still get their music pretty easily.

Check out Receiving the Gift of Flavor. I think it's their best IMO.

For some cool heavy music with horns, see if you can hunt down an album by an Ontario band named Glueleg (now defunct, unfortunately). Their first major release (either eponymous or called "Park Alien", I can't remember), is just amazing. Bass player is smokin, too, and plays stick on a bunch of songs. Also a sweet rendition of Red by King Crimson on the album, too. Some really dark, heavy riffing with keening brass melodic lines over top. The second album is a bit more accessible, but at the same time more experimental as well. I believe it's called Clodhopper.

My recent addition to this thread if Jerry Cantrell's "Cut You In." It features Lane Staley and Mike Inez so it sounds for all intents and purposes like a Alice in Chains song... with horns. Worth if a listen in nothing else.

I didn't get much jazz out of that at all. Maybe a couple sections with jazzy chords, but the shred soloing ruined the music for me. Thanks, but no thanks for the suggestion.

Ah alright, they did have 4 songs on that player, and one of them had a beautiful free jazz ending.

Instrumentalist and composer, Dave Murray, is best known for his drumming and didjiridu playing for the multi genre fusion group, Estradasphere (Web of Mimicry records.)

Professionally he has toured Europe & North America and has recorded/performed/ or collaborated with: Estradasphere, Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Daedelus, MC Busdriver, Smith Dobson, Mats Morgan Band, Showtime Network, and The Banana Slug String Band (Winner of the Association of Independent Music best childrens recording)

Frederick Thorndendal from Meshuggah, has a solo record. Sol Niger Within. Some really cool stuff on there!! Very jazzy with some darn good metal as well. I think you can pick it up at Meshuggah.net
