Just to throw my 2 cents in: First off, I absolutely love the Cliff era of Metallica (don't hate). I do enjoy And Justice For All, Black album is OK, but then I don't like anything past that- I just can't get into it (Although I do enjoy S&M a lot). Megadeth has their of bad albums too (Risk, for ex.) but I think they're more consistent than Metallica. Although I do have to admit: despite that Metallica lost that burning flame, their stage presence is a lot more lively than Megadeth's (mainly Dave who just kinda stands there). I guess I'll go with Megadeth.

I have nothing but respect for the guy. But there is no way he was better than Jason, in terms of bass playing. I love Cliff, hell, he even inspired me to play bass. He was a great songwriter in his time. But I just get so tired of people telling me that just because of "Anesthesia" that he's better than Jason. There's just no way.

C'mon dude. Listen to any isolated bass track of master of puppets and tell me the that he is doing something outside the box. He has creativity, it just doesnt show in all the other songs.
This is a tuffy for me but I always enjoyed the older Megadeth stuff from high school, especially the Peace Sells album. Black Friday was my song on that one. My vote goes to Megadeth.
Hmm....I haven't liked Metallica since MOP, so Megadeth. Peace Sells - Countdown was great. Nothing beats Rust In Peace for me.

And more on topic, Master of Puppets is a better album than pretty much any other album in its genre. Megadeth is a great band, but I have never listened to them as much as the first three Metallica albums.

As much as I like both bands, it's not really a contest. IMO, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets sit high, high, high above anything either band produced subsequently.

The most drastic difference in quality is between the original and remastered versions of Killings is My Business, and Business is Good. The original sounds like it was recorded with a cassette player's onboard microphone from under a pillow. I remember the first time someone suggested that I listen to Megadeth because it had the guy that wrote half the songs on Kill 'em All. I expected the quality to be about the same, it was not.
Then the remaster came out, and WOW was I blown away. This was the first remaster I ever heard that was 100% worth the endeavor. The sound is crystal clear, and I was stunned by how fantastic every instrument is on that record. I still like Kill 'em All better, but the best songs on Killing is My Business blow anything on Kill em All out of the water.
Up till and including "And Justice for All" it's Metallica by a fair margin. after that it's neither really.

Megadeth wins for having the musical chops. Marty Friedman is a vastly more gifted and talented guitarist than Kirk Hammett. See the same for Nick Menza's drumming v. Lars sub-competent performances.
I personally always identified with Mustaine's doomed, cynical, gallows humor more than Hetfield's "abuse-survivor" direction that he really moved to lyrically from the Black Album onward.
That said, I'm not a fan of post-"Born Again" Mustaine's public viewpoints.
