Gar Samuelson DESTROYS as well. I think Dave is a lot more carefree and upbeat as a person than the Metallica guys. Lars would probably be a better drummer if they could get him to sit still for 5 minutes :scowl:

If we go pre-1990s, it's close but definitely in favor of Metallica. Nowadays it's Megadeth all the way. I don't hate Dave like most people do, and think the guys have done a great job trying to connect with fans. Also, Megadeth has done far more in their comeback, and it's been overall better than Metallica.
Gave my vote to Metallica for Cliff, though. I would change it now that I wrote it up and it sounds more in favor of Megadeth, but the poll doesn't let me change my vote. Ah well. Gotta admit, though, Cliff, not Dave Junior, was why I first looked at bass.

I feel the same way. Back in the day it seemed that Cliff was the end all/be all bass player because he had the right look and attitude (and if you could occasionally hear it clearly on the records, the sound). Ellefson's bass playing career now spans decades longer than Cliff's, and thanks to the remasters it is clear that he kicked ass this whole time. I should have been rooting for him as a fanboy this whole time, I suppose. He still does not have much charisma though, as I get the feeling that he is the type of guy that would have no problem charging you money to autograph something.

I think the assumption was that if you like neither then you won't bother to respond. Similarly, if there was a poll about WHAM!, then I wouldn't weigh in on that since I'm not too fond of them.
For me it would have to be Metallica, when they were in their prime they were unbeatable (ever seen any videos of them live in '89? Pretty intense stuff, even without Cliff)
Megadeth was edging it by one vote when I voted. They seem to have stalled after that
I vote Metallica, simply for the first 3 albums (AJFA wasn't bad either). From KEA's raw driving thrash attitude, RTL's dark atmospheric tone, and MOP's perfect combination of what they had learned from their previous 2 albums which resulted in what I find to be a perfect metal album, (something I'll only say about a handful of albums, including Slayers Raining Blood) I find their contribution to the genre to be far more influential and lasting than anything Megadeth put out.
I was a fan of Metallica until two things happened...
- The whole Napster/"Lashing out at fans" incident
- St Anger
The members of both bands don't impress me (other than Rob... he seems like a cool dude)... but Megadeth writes better songs, in my opinion. Tornado of Souls and Hangar 18 both blow my mind every time I hear them. Exceptional guitar parts. Although "Ride the Lightning" was a great album... never really got into other MetallicA stuff.

True, and though I personally love the hell out of KEA, the next two albums were when they really acquired their sound and really evolved past their Motorhead-y style sounding thrash roots, for what became something much darker and more melodic, and original.
Megadeth is fine and dandy, but their songs miss that certain element that makes them relatable on a personal level, for me at least. The feeling you get when you listen to say Fade to Black, or Orion even.
(the horrible thought of Dave singing FtB just popped into my head... ::shudders:: )
My question is how do you relate to songs like fade to black and Orion, and not to songs like Peace sells and Black Friday?
Megadeth. David Ellefson's sound and playing amazes me. songs like "Mechanix", "Killing is my Business...", "Wake Up Dead", and "Mary Jane" hit me big at age 14. But I love Kill 'Em All. Tracks such as "Jump in the Fire", "Hit the Lights", and "Whiplash" had a huge influence on me. I saw the Big 4 in Indio, California and Metallica was amazing.
