Microtubes X

I agree. The quality of demos overall is great, but his close up head shots and talking are....INTENSE.

He seems like an okay guy in book. I'm just poking a little fun, and I'm sure I couldn't pull off something better.
Also, I'll take his talking over Mr. Ex's scoopy wandering noodle demos any day.

Yeah I mean, he's Patrick. Not tryin to knock the dude. Plus I REALLY appreciate his demos. You can tell he puts a lot of work into them. The way he talks just rubs me the wrong way. That's more my problem than anyone else's.

How dare you @monsterthompson !!! So rude ;)

I love excane. It helps that I consider him a friend. But I can see why some don't like his demos. At least he's starting to mix up the basses he uses now. I saw him use a Fender J bass in a demo not too long ago.

I’m impatiently waiting for hands-on reviews that can answer the question if whether the X7 offers enough tone shaping for those running straight to the PA for use with in-ears. It doesn’t have as flexible of an EQ as the rest of the DG lineup, so I’m mildly hesitant over running the X7 on its own, hence why I haven’t just ordered one already.

I know that for me I'm in on the X7 because it has the adjustable crossover points and bass compression vs being a direct to front of house tool but if it does that well too...damn, that's a lot of board space cleared up.

I never really gave stuff like what you're talking about much thought before @TheEmptyCell but now that I play with a band that practices with IEM's, they are considerations I'm starting to think of. It's like the AOU for instance, having a speaker sim def could make a big difference. But overall, I would be very happy with the X7 either way I think as I would use it mainly as a dirt box and sound tool. I have other things at my disposal if I really needed them like IR's in my HX.

You know they'll come out with an Ultra version soon enough. I would bet money on it.

Obviously his demos are powerful and influential. Again, I couldn't do something better. However, his demos have done more to turn me off on pieces of gear. I'll shut up now. I've beaten this drum before, and I don't need to derail the thread over this point.

I'm very curious about the smaller Microtubes X. I'm considering getting some DG tone back in my rig, and I'm debating on which gear to get. I'm tempted to do the VST stuff, since I work more in the DAW world than anywhere else. But I like pedals, so... Both? :)

Did you see you get free DG410 (that was the one I saw anyway) cab sims with the VST stuff now?

Please, PLEASE, do haha. He sure seems like a great dude and damn can he jam. But I can't stand watching his demos!!!! haha I usually FF>> through his talking.

I do the same. He’s tough to look at imo, just something about him rubs me the wrong way. I don’t get all the rockin out and head banging like you’re playing Wembly Stadium doing a bass demo, but whatever.

Eh, I get him getting into it. Plus, once that record button gets hit, I imagine it's not the easiest thing to do to try and not be awkward or boring. I tried to do a YT vid once......I got hung up on the second word and stopped. Decided it wasn't that important haha so I hand it to the guys who do it and do it well at that.

I love Patrick's videos but they all do seem to be a bit too fluffy. He never seems to review something that he doesn't absolutely love. Maybe that's by design though, who knows. I've watched a couple of his Q&A's and he sometimes had a bit of a personality quirk that put me off a bit when answering some of the questions, but other than that, I really enjoy his demo's and love his style of playing.

Yeah, I think he's got a big personality and he's so animated that zooming out a bit when he's talking to the camera would probably make things a little less jarring for me.

I love that he gets into his playing - he's putting the effort in to give it energy. He gets some absolutely awesome tones out of pretty standard gear (barring what he's demoing usually) and has some stonking great dirty riffs.

My only actual critique is that I wish he'd spend a little more time showing the tamer side of things. Many of his demos I'm really wanting to hear what things sound like with a bit of hair to bit of crunch along side the maxed out gain. All power to him.

YouTubers become caricatures to maximize their visibility. That's the way YouTube works: thoughtful, sober, mature results in less visibility than intense, EXAGGERATED (all caps helps), extreme. F'r instance I noticed this with Scott's Bass Lessons. As an occasional visitor for years, it's seemed to me that he went from down-to-earth to hyper and kinda goofy... and his success shows that it's working. So, I can't blame Scott, Patrick, or anyone else for thinking of their bottom line.

I agree that you have to be a character to make it work. I don’t always like the character, but I know that it has to be there. There also needs to be something genuine about that character that connects to you as a person. It can’t be too artificial and still be watchable. There’s always the Mr. Ex direction of not having a character being a character. A synth guy named Red Means Recording has done a bit of that, with no speaking and bits of text on screen, similar to Knobs which does pedal demos.

On topic, there’s a new IG video clip of the X7.

Having said all of that about YT personalities, Zach Rizer is a perfect example of how you can do demos and gain a decent following without fluff, exaggeration, super baked in tone, etc. His videos are very well executed and rely solely on his ability to highlight as many features within a pedal as possible. He's got less of a following than guys who kick out weekly reviews, but his demos are pure substance.

yeah he's great. I just wish he was more animated and would dance around more. If he could work in props like a vuvuzela or a clown nose, I'd totally subscribe way harder than I do currently.
