[Minneapolis/MN Thread] Midwestern Comradarie

You might try My Music Store on Hwy 55 and Winnetka. They have one of the better bass to guitar ratios in town. I'd also consider Twin Town on 34th and Lyndale, S. Minneapolis. Because I know the owner, also check out Encore Music on about 24th and Lyndale.

I think the standard fix is to put some washers in there. It doesn't strike me as a big problem.

Yes, they can repair amps fine. But all the tube amps I've taken there in the past have come back optimized for a certain kind of trebly, gritty drive sound reminiscent of what I've heard from several examples of their own guitar amps, regardless of any requests I make to them.

I understand that many people find that desirable, but they have actively worked against my wishes if they think they know better; not because they know the tech better, or electronic safety better, but because they think they know better than me what I want. Other people I know have experienced the same.

So it comes down to taste. If you like the tone they aim for, then they are good techs. Personally, I'd much rather dig around and find a less renowned tech that understands my style, than use a famous tech that can only imagine a narrow window of possibilities.

John at the Woodbury Music-Go-Round is a good guy, a good tech, and he's a bass player too.

Hi...I have a 62RI Jazz that I took 3 years ago to Charlie Hoffman's for neck repair. No relief left. They put on another neck from factory. With the crazy humidty and lack of the same...I tried to adjust nut. Would only turn 1/2 turn tighter ...and that is as far as it would go. Would they put on a neck with so little relief left to adjust at a future time?
Anyway....is there someone in the Cities that takes care of Bass's? A store or individual?
Thanks!

Thought I'd run this by the local TB brain trust.

My wife teaches hula locally and occasionally I will play bass and or run sound for her group when they perform.

Well, she's gone and tentatively booked her group to put on a "Music in the Park" thing at the bandshell in downtown Hudson this summer.

My PA is kind of a cobbled together old thing that has done OK with the type of thing she's done in the past, but this is bigger than what I can handle. I was thinking of renting a bigger PA from EMI or wherever but then there's still my very limited sound reinforcement skills to consider in actually running it/setting it up.

Before I embark on a crash course in live sound reinforcement, I thought I'd check into a full service sound guy. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience/recommendations with that and what a ballpark figure might be for an hour long show (which would obviously involve more than that for setup and take down). The band is usually a bass, 1-2 guitars, an ukulele and 2-3 voices. No percussion. The crowds can be up to 200 as long as the weather is nice.

Anyhow, any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :bassist:

New here,

I am looking for lesson recommendations, in the south metro... I know my scales and have been playing for 25 years but want to continue learning different techniques, especially related to thumb and slap... any ideas or recommendations for someone, south metro/St. Paul would be great?

Thanks!

I took lessons from Ryan Butler at Capitol Guitars in St. Paul and thought he was a pretty good teacher with reasonable rates. He used to teach at the St. Paul Guitar Studio up until about a year ago. If you want his contact info shoot me a PM.

Not sure if anybody is looking for an Easter gig but I could use some help getting out of a jam. I play for Christ Victorious Lutheran Church in Chaska for their morning contemporary service and was going to play Easter Sunday but last minute my wife decided that she wants to go see her parents for Easter. :rollno: I hate to leave them hanging without a bass player on one of the biggest days, church wise that is, of the year.

All the music is modern Contemporary Christian music (Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Hillsong, Third Day, etc…) It’s a paying gig and I can help kick in a few bucks as well if more compensation is needed. It’s a great group of musicians to play with. The electric guitarist is phenomenal and they have an awesome drummer as well. If anybody is interested PM me for more details and I’ll put you in touch with the music director.

Last year I got hooked up with a group of fellow old timers that play 50-70's classics about 6-8 shows a year and we need some attention to the PA set-up ... one of the guitarists owns/begs/borrows pretty much what is needed to get by each night, but the time has probably come for somebody to step forward and fill in the blanks, either what is needed or a whole system that makes a little more sense. So, if anyone is upgrading their system, and what is going out the door would be good for small to med club/ VFW type hall situations, or if somebody knows of some decent stuff looking for a home, feel free to drop me a PM and we can go from there ...

As always, $$ is tighter than tight, and the trade-off I realized is going to be dated stuff, but it was 40 years ago the last time I got involved with sound gear, and what was current for that time in the clubs and lounges we used a couple Tapco mixers bolted together powered by a Crown DC300 into a couple Altec1218's (?) (mini voice of the theaters) and a half dozen Hot Spots for monitors ... so just about anything is going to be modern compared to that ...

Probably powered mixer into 2-4 full range cabs on posts I imagine ... LMK what you know of please .. thanks

My own PA was around $1000 before (or perhaps even with) mics, stands, cables. My four cabs (Yamaha AS312 three way) are discontinued. I think they were more designed for DJ's. They're inefficient, but sound quite nice. I use them for bass practice as well, they have good low end and sound good for it, but I don't run anything but vocals through the PA when it's actually in use.

For small gigs, I couldn't find a pair of monitors I wanted, so I bought the second pair of AS312's and I mount them in these (Link Removed) for monitors. The set for the audience go on stands of course. I think I got the four monitors for a bit over $500, all used.

For a head I've got a six channel Yamaha powered mixer (EMX 66M - ~$350 new when I bought it, I think), which is 300 watts per side, 600 watts bridged to eight ohms. I rarely use the built in effects, but they're there if I need them, I suppose. The successor to my model has SMPS class D power. I'm not a tough guy, but I can hold it with my arm straight out for minutes at a time. VERY light.

I don't want any more PA than I have. I use it for playing back audio from my computer most of the time, bass practice when I'm in that room, small rehearsals (room limited, not PA limited), block parties and events that my wife does. It's the perfect size for my needs.

If I need more, I'll find someone from whom to rent. Anything larger would probably live in a trailer, invite "feature creep" ("Gotta get a new limiter!") and generally become more maintenance intensive. And I hate schlepping PA. If I had a nice big one I'd suddenly be in the PA business, supplying the rehearsal space, packing it up and moving it for our own gigs or renting it out to friends occasionally. I don't want to be that guy.

Thanks kraigo, being 'that guy' is probably one my main concerns as well ... everything I am looking at for sure will be used, and the powered mixer I am looking at, probably is overkill, especially with the guitarists wife turnning knobs on it ...

... anybody have experience with the older style PAS Target Series cabs? .. I have a line on a couple of T-1200's priced what looks decently

... I did check into some rental prices for one of the larger shows that is coming up, but got kind of a deer in the headlights look as to why (something like that is needed) when brought up to the rest of the group ..
