Holy crap, that was fun! I just woke up; Rick's homebrew packed a little more punch than I'm used to :) Thanks again to those responsible for putting the meet together.

I'm totally on board with the seminar thing. I've been wanting to become more proficient with my instrument and it sounds like that would be a good way to start. Last night showed me that my gear is just fine, but it sounds its best when someone who knows what they're doing is playing it.

I don't have a non-goofy picture of me, so suffice it to say I was the dude with the OSHA bass. :smug:

Thanks for the PR on the Norm Stockton clinic. One little correction tho...the clinic is on Thursday Nov. 19th, not the 16th. (See "News" on the talkbass frontpage for details.)

I had a great time last night despite showing up late and smelly. Going to these meets has made me want to practice more and maybe, just maybe, try a five string someday. I've still got plenty to learn on the 4 though.

I've been thinking about clinic ideas. I've taken lessons from a local guy (Happy Apple member) who might do it. I'm sure there are people in the group who could put something together too. Of course anyone might be more interested if it was a paid gig. Would this get together still work if we pitched in some small amount?

The Norm Stockton clinic sounds interesting. I hope to make it as I've never been to anything like this before.

Good point.. not trying to force you to borrow gear.. do not trust the stuff at stores.. much of the low end stuff is a 4+1.. (not a 5er).... it does take a weekend to get aclimated.

For your Country work, I'd also be willing to lend you a BEAD tuning bass...

Thursday Nov. 19th, - Who's Norm Stockton
I've gotten a few notes from guys wanting to know who Norm Stockton is... basically a socal bass guy who's hooked up with some touring acts - his most notable is a CCM artist on the stadium circuit.

What to expect (guessing)?
He's endorsed by GK and MTD.... he'll be pimping that stuff along with his personally authored videos. It is at a church - chances are you'll hear some type of prayer. It should then go into some theory and lessons... at the end it will be advised to buy the video series. The church will probably ask a freewill donation (offering) for their mission and expenses. IF this is within the current trends, involvement with a church is not manditory.

IF you've stopped the radio on KLove or KTIS, chances are you've heard Lincoln Brewster... it's kind of like diatonic power pop material. Guessing he's the second largest ticket/record seller in the genre behind Chris Tomlin.

Thanks again to MNAirhead for posting the info on Norm Stokton. I'm attempting to orchestrate the clinic for the host church, so can offer just a bit more on what to expect...

Clinic should run about 2 hours total, with an intermission halfway.

Church affiliation definitely not a prerequisite for attendance. If you're a bassist, you're welcome. Actually, even if you're not a bassist (I barely qualify, myself), you're welcome too. :)

Admission is free; we'll take a freewill offering to help cover expenses. No pressure whatsoever, though.

Norm will have his merch available for purchase--thinking the sales pitch will be pretty low-key, tho.

I was able to attend the Norm Stockton clinic last night. Thursday nights are very busy for me but I was able to attend for most of it.

Here are a few notes I took for those who missed it:

Practice every day to develop habits when you play out.

For every drum groove, you should know 10 bass lines. My son has a drum machine so I need to try this.

Muting is very important. Keep fretted fingers flat to mute strings and move thumb from pickup to E string to D... depending on what string you are striking. If you don't do this, practice two octave scales and practice. I don't do this so I tried last night and wasn't very successful. Need to keep at it.

Play with feeling. Even if you are playing 8th notes, it doesn't have to be boring. He have a few examples (up an octave, slide, hammer), ... But don't get too busy. Space, comping, ... is just as important.

Spent some time talking about slap technique (and other pyrotechnics). I'll leave others who attended to comment.

He talked about other bass players (Marcus Miller, Jaco, ...), re-purpose riffs/styles/... (amateurs borrow, professionals steal).

Norm talked about his equipment and it sounded great. He offered the GK cab/head for sale at a discount (didn't want to ship it back) but I had to leave to see who bought it. It is nicer than anything I've played through (or own).

This was my first bass clinic and really enjoyed it. I would attend one every week if they were like this one. Norm spoke clearly and made the clinic a lot of fun. Clearly a very technical player but able to share ideas to help me be a better player.

MNAirHead was also at the clinic. Great to spend some time with him.

Steamgirl: I swear I was behind you in line at Menards on University in St. Paul at about 2:30 on Wednesday. I couldn't place the person with a context until we were both checked out so I didn't accost you.

Since I don't want to put these on Craig's List, but I wouldn't mind selling them and you all probably know drummers, these are half-assed on the block for $1750 (somewhat negotiable):

If I put them on Craig's List every heavy metal moron in the city is going to come to my house, bang the **** out of my drums, then say "sorry dude, I don't have the cash." In the past I have totally been in love with "sub sets" of this kit, but they haven't inspired me in about two years, so if anyone is interested I'm happy to see them go to someone who would love them like I have. It's a cool set and they're in great shape.
