Only a few games to the all-star break. Mariners are still three back of the Astros. There's hope! It's also not quite August. All well trained Mariners fans know what happens in August. I was initiated into the ritual when the Mariners went into a lengthy tail-spin in 1988 or so, after looking like they were at least semi-alive to the end of July. Darnell Coles, Dave Valle, Alvin Davis, and Jimmy Presley were the more or less stars, as I recall. Edgar Martinez was a good glove, no bat prospect, mired in triple A ball for another year or so. Ken Griffey Jr. hadn't joined the team yet. All that time gone past, and yet the scars of August just keep on. Never mind 1995 and 2001, August is a time of dread. By now, we wouldn't know what to do if it was any other way.
