Haha. I wouldn't describe a few dozen Cubs fans as "many", but this IS the Post we're talking about. I don't care myself, it's just an exhibition. Besides, it's nice to let the Nationals win something for once.

I haven’t watched a Home Run Derby since Harmon Killebrew beat Boog Powell.
Don’t get me wrong!
I got a World Of props for HK, but we are talkin’ about THE BOOG here.
Ken Griffey Jr. is da man of the HR Derby. Back to back years and 3 total wins. All with the same club. All during the "Steroid Era" (as if they aren't still being used and abused . . .) Much respect.

Did you watch to see if everyone was following the rule? Did you notice how much time he had left? Neither did I, and it's an exhibition. Did anyone point it out to him when he was doing it first round? No. They were all just having fun.
I'm gonna guess everyone didn't strictly follow that rule. Where Harper probably did gain an advantage was in the luck of the draw. His first two opponents only hit 12 each (the least of anyone), so he was able to stop as soon as he hit 13. He was probably fresher for the final round. Again, though, it's a show, not a real competition.

Had a busy day...my feet (neuropathy) were Killing me...hurt so much even a beer didn’t taste good!
I did see enough of the game to notice that MLB seems to have given up on those Horrible, Gaudy, Butt Ugly all star uniforms the players have been wearing
recently...and That’s a good thing.
Mookie Bettis looked ‘right’ in his road greys.
I went to bed in the 4th.

I don't mind. I actually enjoy watching the game. Unlike other sports, the players are trying hard - it's also fun watching players get up and swing, rather than working a 10 pitch at bat (stepping out after every pitch to tighten their batting gloves). I was watching their faces when they did something good (like Gennett's home run). I also liked Lindor's comment about no one wanted to strike out or give up a home run. Refreshing change compared to the Pro Bowl. But I wish they would make the schedule so it happens exactly at the 81 game mark.
The second half is when it gets serious.

As long as we are on break, and can't talk about games, let's talk about what can be changed to make the game better. I'm a "purist", but even I think the game needs to be made faster and more exciting to keep attention. Some things I would want (and is backed by baseball history):
1. Don't give batters time out whenever they want it. Unless they foul the ball off their foot, or get something in their eye, stay in the `2$~@%~~@#-in box. Let the pitcher throw. Same way, if the pitcher unduly delays throwing the ball without a valid reason, call a balk (or ball if no one on base. That's the way it used to be.
2. Eliminate the shift. The rules already set limits on where players can play (nobody other than the catcher in foul territory).
3. Deaden the ball a little. A little less pop, and maybe not everyone is swinging for the fences.
4. Lower the mound. It's already been done twice (initially no mound, then lowered from 15" to 10". I say lower it an inch per year until it gets down to 5".
5. Eliminate the amount of pitcher changes. Make it so a pitcher has to throw to at least two batters.
6. I hate the challenge rule (would rather just have someone buzz in if there was an obvious error and tell the umps), but if you are going to have it, enforce the 10 second rule, and limit the review to 30 seconds.

I like the All Star Break, especially this year. It means the Mariners have a chance to recover and turn around their latest skid.
