I actually saw game 163 in the 1995 Refuse to Lose season in Seattle in the Kingdome. My wife snuck out and got tickets, then dropped them off without telling me. She had to call up to make sure I got there, because I was completely surprised and immensely grateful. If you can get to a game like that, it's worth a kidney.
The Cubs won’t have to travel tonight or tomorrow, win or lose. Still, after 162 games, I wish baseball would just let the head to head records decide this stuff.

So the NL teams that needed wins to force ties won by a combined score of 48-5. Good lord. At least the Cards put up the losing 5. Total blowouts otherwise.

As long as they don't become the NBA/NFL. I'd like to sees 1 game WC, 2/3, 3/4, and then 4/7 WS. Build the suspense. But no matter what, the season is too $&&# long. The World Series ued to be the beginning of October - now it's November. Between that, extra off days, and all night games, they are going to be shoveling snow before game 7.
Well shoot. The Mariners' season is over and they won 89 games. It wasn't good enough by a fair stretch. Normally that gets you in, or at least close. Next year! Except I have to wait a few months before proclaiming that the Mariners will win the 2019 World Series. For now, it's got to be anybody except the Yankees or Red Sox.
I believe that I told you earlier in the season that I reserved the World Series Championship for the Brewers this year. Good luck next season.
You did. Dammit! And it turns out it was a valid reservation. Guess I'll be rooting for the Brewers now, since that's the key to making the Mariners 2019 World Championship a reality. Something has to work someday. It may as well be that.
Well this year I’ll agree with you; if it were head to head, the Dodgers wouldn’t have to play the Rocks today or a wild card tomorrow. But who knows in future seasons? The shoe could be on the other foot. Makes for exciting games. So if they win today, they get tomorrow off and Rockies have to keep traveling. They better win.
Sure, I'm biased and I get that this could flip around in future seasons. But if the Cubs lose (and it certainly looks like they will, barring an unlikely comeback in the bottom of the ninth), they'll still be 11-9 vs. the Brewers this year--yet they'll have to win a wild-card game tomorrow just to be the road team in the NLDS vs. Milwaukee.

I note here that the Braves are the only NL playoff team that does NOT have to play a Game 163.
And that is the beauty of sports - you have to play, and nothing is guaranteed. You set standards, and then play by them. If not, why have playoffs - just give the championship to the team with the best record. Even better, no reason to play a season - just go by the predictions at the start of the season.
I've got no horse in this race - I cheer for the Mets and the Diamondbacks, in that order. But it will be fun...
Their record against the Brewers is the reason the game was at Wrigley. I understand what you are saying, but I do like that the division champ is the one with more total wins.
But I'm not suggesting any such extreme measure, of course. Only that the regular season should matter a little more than it does now. As for standards, they've changed before--it was just a couple years ago that the unfortunate era of the All-Star game outcome determining home field advantage in the World Series finally came to a well-deserved end.
