Just looking over some season splits for the Red Sox, and it's pretty impressive how badly they faired against the other AL East teams this year :eek: Every year there is a team or two in the ALE that gets punished by the unbalanced schedule. I've seen it happen to the Jays several times over the years, getting beat up on by Boston, New York, and Tampa all summer long. This year it was Boston's turn. I know that feel, Red Sox fans. I think we're all going to be happy to see a more balanced schedule next summer!

The Jays alone handed the Red Sox 16 losses this summer, and out-scored them 125 to 55 in those 19 games! The Yanks beat Boston 13 times this summer, and Tampa has beat them 12 times (with 3 games left to play). Boston just barely managed a winning record against Baltimore, and did just fine against non-AL East times. But Toronto, Tampa, and NYY absolutely ruined Boston's summer.

I think my math is correct... ( famous last words... :laugh: )

That was a painful loss for the Brewers, who I expected to win after they tied it in the bottom of the 10th.

I've seen the Phils suffer painful late-season losses to Houston in years past, so don't underestimate their ability to get swept down there. Heck, they just got swept by the Cubs. Thankfully, they have Nola on the mound tonight, which gives them a decent chance. But if they lose tonight, they really could get swept.

I'm still hoping the Mariners can overtake the Blue Jays and have at least a few home games guaranteed this fall. They have to win out and the Jays need to be swept. It could happen, y'know. The pathological optimist is being pathological.

The first of many rings will be headed to Seattle this year. The Mariners will catch the Giants, and eventually the Yankees in endless success. Really, they will. I just know it.

I'm still hoping. And I know that if they make the playoffs, they have a shot. But I'm not holding my breath this year.

One man's pain..

Happy my Phils could end their 11 year drought. I have no illusions that they can make a deep playoff run, but I'm just happy to watch my team in postseason baseball.

First WC spot, and home field advantage in the WC Series: Clinched :cool: Looks more likely that the Jays will be hosting the M's in Toronto, but there's a chance it could be the Rays. Both of those teams are playing a bit poorly right now, while the Jays are looking pretty strong.

After a bit of a rocky start to this season, it looks like Ray has pitched quite well for the M's this year. I'm curious to see how he attacks the Jays' hitters. Even with all of the dangerous RH bats in the Jays' lineup, lefties can sometimes get the better of them.

I hope he makes the Jays look like mollusks. I am not entirely happy the second round opponent will be the damn Astros,but the worm has to turn eventually. Why not now?

This will be fun. The Jays won 92 and the Mariners won 90. Both had pretty good seasons so far. The Mariners got their losses out of the way over the last couple weeks. World Series, here we go!

I agree that it's going to be a fun (though potentially also agonizing) series! Best of luck to both teams!

Toronto and Seattle both placed second in their divisions, with 92 and 90 wins respectively like you mentioned. The Jays seem to have some momentum going into October, with a combined record of 22-11 in September and October. The M's had a winning record in September and October too, but with more losses sprinkled in at 18-14.

For what it's worth, Seattle won the season series 5-2. The Jays took the first series (in May) 2-1, and then the M's swept the Jays 4-0 during that horrendous West Coast road trip in July. I think both teams are better now compared to at that last meeting in July.

Maybe I'm just a homer, but I think the Jays should be the favourites to win this series. They have a very deep lineup that can score runs in bunches, and their pitching has been solid enough. The Jays had one of the toughest schedules in the league and still made it to 92 wins. I heard on a podcast recently (didn't fact check it though) that the Jays' schedule saw them playing more above-.500 teams than most other teams in the league. Not trying to discredit the M's 90 wins, but their schedule in the AL West had them playing the A's, Angels, and Rangers 19 times each. This season has been a grind for the Jays and I think they're ready for the pressure of the postseason. You never know though! :eek: Seattle does have some very good pitching, and sometimes that wins out in the postseason.

I can't wait for the WC Series games to start tomorrow!

Great year for baseball.

My only complaint is the growing divide between the haves and have nots. Too many teams entered the season with absolutely no chance to make the playoff, and who go through long stretches that way (my salute to the Orioles), and too many teams who used the regular season as an extended spring training to prepare for the playoffs.

Face it, baseball needs a salary cap (both upper and lower). It's insane what the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees did this year - and I say this as a Mets fan. And baseball wants to expand???

Sports is unlike other businesses. Coke wants to bury Pepsi. But teams are dependent on all its teams being strong. Look at basketball and football - both have caps, both are healthy, and both have lots of teams with legitimate chances to win every year.

Your take on the relative difficulty of the schedules between the Jays and the Mariners is right on. It's the Mariners' offense that will be their downfall if they wash out of the playoffs. They have games where they cannot hit the inside of a wet paper bag wrapped around a bat. Several who were supposed to be big bats this season have underachieved. Good thing Rodriguez and Suarez are both ready to go. They drive the offense along with France. Crawford can get hot at times, and Kelenic, when he's not striking out, can do a lot of damage. Same with Raleigh. But, there are a lot of holes and big ifs.

Funny thing is that the pitching hasn't been so good over the last few weeks. When the Mariners have won lately, it has seemed like it was 9-8 or 6-5 or something. So the hitting bailed out the pitching. Go figure.
