Bah. Cubs were up 6-0 and wound up losing 7-6.
. . . while the White Sox were blowing a 3-0 lead over the D-backs to lose 15-4. Ugh. The logical part of my brain *knows* better but the illogical part never stops asking "how come they never win games when it would help the Cubs?". As the Cubs lose the tie-breaker against every other wild card wannabe in the race they just can't afford to blow games like this. That Suzuki miss/drop in the 8th elicited a yell that probably woke up my neighbor's kids.
Brooks Robinson was just before my time, but when I was in little league, I made a few great plays at third one game and the umpire called me a young Brooks Robinson. I started paying closer attention to the World Series highlights they played during Brewer rain delays. I was blown away. He has been one of my favorite players ever to have played the game since the early 80s. RIP #5.

I was having palpitations last night listening to the Mariners game. They were up 6-0 in the top of the eighth, and ended up giving up a couple runs. The bullpen has bee outstanding all year, until recently. I sure hope they get back to outstanding. Good thing they held on just fine. They are only three games back of Texas and a half game back of Houston with six games to go. Two with Houston and four more at home against Texas. The beautiful torture will continue for at least another week. It's the best agony that sports has to offer.
The north side and the south side have their rivalry, even when they are just falling on their faces, so it seems.

Honestly I'm pulling for the Sox whenever they aren't playing the Cubs but I know I probably don't represent the norm. I don't think that sentiment is as common in the other direction but doesn't bother me. I'm also the first to concede that for a family outing Sox park is the better venue (no jokes about because it's mostly empty). Parking, lots of it, with tailgating and close proximity to the expressway. Wide concourses and kid-focused stuff inside the park. Fireworks Fridays. It's too bad Jerry still owns the team and keeps finding new and disappointing ways to make the team step on its johnson.

And the margin for error just keeps getting thinner for the Mariners. Jeez. They have to sweep the Rangers now, and even then, they aren't guaranteed a spot without a little help.
More or less. There are other ways they can get into the post-season, but at this point, even sweeping the Rangers doesn't get them more than a wild card, based on tie-breakers. They did the same thing last season. Mariners fans don't need any kind of medical stress test to see if they have cardiac problems these days.

Ugh, after last night's brutal loss (not to be confused with the *previous* night's brutal loss) the Cubs have now lost 5 games this month where they were leading in the 8th or later inning . . . and the month's not over yet! That ties a 50 year old record, so we got THAT goin' for us, which is <not> nice. So they start today's play tied with the Marlins for the final NL wild card spot which is really one game *behind* the Marlins as the fish have the tie breaker advantage. Sitting at home watching the Sox/D-backs day game that I had planned on going to ($1 tix/free parking which is normally $20-25) but the weather's iffy so left work as planned anyway and just walked home. Like any day fishing is better than being at the office so is any day watching baseball . . . or pretty much anything, really, that doesn't involve surgery. This game now also holds no meaning for the Cubs as it might have but it beats working. 
And there's a Mexican popup in the lobby tonight so it's Taco Thursday here which is never a bad thing.

Most folks don't realize that "Go Cubs Go", the song played at Wrigley after a win, was also written by Goodman. Of course you haven't been able to "catch it all on WGN" for almost a decade now. Goodman wrote that back in '84, the year he passed away from cancer and the Cubs went to the playoffs. They lost to the Padres but I'll always remember game 1 when Sutcliffe turned on one and got ALL of it and parked it on Sheffield. Take that and shove it up your universal DH rule, Rob Manfred!
Please take the entire game off tonight, Braves, rather than just the first 6-7 innings. Let my Cubbies win one before they leave town.
Go get ‘em. I bet some of the guys blow off. AJ is pitching. Cubs will win today.
Or just beat their brains out from the beginning so I turn the channel to the Hawks game and don't alarm my wife/neighbors with another late-inning blood curdling yell when (yet another) Cub boots the game with an E.
Edit - and by "their" I meant the Cubs, so that the Braves just crush them early in the game and not play with their food.
