Mob wedding?!?!?!

Oh man I just found out this weekends gig is for a mobsters kid!!! like legit Chicago mafia wedding at a mafia hotel. holly hell Im going to keep my mouth shut!
Outfit!
In Chicago it’s referred to as “the Outfit”
And little word of advice, stop talking about it.
There is nothing Outfit guys hate more than people who “stereotype” them and “assume” they’re in the Outfit... especially when they are. ;)

I met the kid getting married and seems very cool. he also wanted to play drums on 2 songs and we said sure.

Damn right you did. ;)

Seriously, just play it straight, dress and act the part, be pros and mind your P's and Q's, bring a great party, learn all the important names and details, make pertinent announcements and allusions throughout the event, schmooze/ingratiate/connect with the audience, pretty much the same as you would do for any upscale private event, and you'll be fine. You might even make some powerful friends and set yourselves up for some juicy future referral business.

Of all the hundreds of private events I've done, though it was not formally acknowledged, it seems pretty certain some of these people were making their substantial bones under the table.

I once played a gig for a "criminalized" motorcycle gang leader's birthday.

Probably one of my best gig ever. We didn't realize who we were playing for until we got there (booked through a 3rd party). The gig was after our regular bar gig from 10 PM to 2 AM. We played from 4 AM to 9 AM. Everyone was super nice and fun. They loved the band. We made a ton of $$$.

Once we were done playing we had a few drinks with the birthday boy. He was really pleased. At one point he said that if anyone ever gave us any kind of "trouble" we just had to let him know... I did not inquire what he meant nor did we took him up on his offer...

I had a gig like that in long island a few years ago. I was told the wedding was for the daughter of a "very well connected" man. I thought it was a joke. When we set up these guys were straight out of the sopranos. After our set the father of the bride personally thanked each member of the band with a handshake and an extra $200 for each of us on top of what we were already being paid. It went pretty smoothly. We have also gotten a few additional gigs from the same family. Nice folks. Just don't ask about what they do for a living. They will give you a dirty look and say they work in the "meat packing" industry.
