Modulus Mob

Very nice, but if the amber isn't your cup of tea you could try Pat Wilkins (no affiliation). His company does all the finishes for Lakland and others.

But if you don't like Ferrari Red and you've paid that much for something, it should be what you want, just saying.

I have actually been in contact with Pat about the refinish job. He is willing to do it for a reasonable price. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, if anything. I'm just seeing what my options are. :D

I got such a great deal that sometimes I feel like I stole this thing! It's an '09 in MINT condition. The original owner sent it to Nordstrand and had them install the pickups and pre. It's got one of the CLEANEST battery compartments on any bass I have had! I didn't pay half of what it would have cost me new!

Wow, that is VERY reasonable. I was expecting $800+

yeah I thought it'd be a lot more too! He said if I sent the whole bass, that he'd take it apart, refinish, reassemble AND do a the setup and everything for around $400 out the door.

...that's why I am still considering a refinish. I just don't know what kind of gloss finish he would use. I would want the thick armor type coating that comes on a Modulus from the factory...that might be a bit more! I heard that kind of finish costs upwards of $800.

can I have a number?

Bill will do a factory quality job. he does or did all the US Laklands, IIRC. But why waste a good looking quilt like that?

I definitely do not want to cover the quilt, I'd just prefer a different color. I played it a bunch over the weekend I decided not to do anything to it at the moment. I like the way it plays too much right now to mess with anything!

...and the color is growing on me! :D

Picked this up on Friday, genesis vj4, I did a very rudimentary set up and the thing just kills, I have been primarily an ebmm player for a while now with some other basses in my arsenal as well but thought it would be cool to own a modulus.

My first thought was a flea/funk but I didn't think it would sound different enough from my Musman basses so I decided to go for a J configuration, in the end I found this and I'm glad I did. Haven't played it at a practice yet but I'm very much looking forward to doing so.

The genesis neck is not a pure modulus but I really like what I get from it the warmth of wood and the stability and dynamics of graphite, really a great blend.

Glad you're liking it. The desire for a different look might be a valuable tool in talking yourself into buying another one.

Do you have any sense of how the Nordies might sound compared to the Barts they install on Quantums?

LOL! Oh I definitely see a second one in my future! :bassist:

I have only had limited experience with Barts, but I hear the warmth that people talk about in association with them. They also have some "hi-fi" characteristics of EMGs (which I am used to in my Spectors). They have clean and crisp high's with a full warm low end!

I really like the pickups!! The Nordy pre in it is really versatile too! It's a bit too tame for my tastes, however. It's really smooth, but I cant seem to dial in a nice growl tone. I am considering changing it out for an OBP-3.

Long story short, I would recommend Nordy's pickups!

That looks great! Nice top and the colour is cool.

Shimming a Modulus neck?

Folks,

One of my Modulus' action is just a tiny bit high for me. I have a non-truss rod Quantum.

I shim Fender basses all the time but have not shimmed a Modulus. The neck is perfect and has a great bow to it (not warped, etc. at all) but I don't want to completely bottom out all of my saddles.

Any luck with shimming a modulus with a graphite neck?

Thanks!

Have you adjusted the bridge at all? Might save you a lot of time/pain/cussing/taking the neck off.

Does anyone know if Modulus makes/has made a 35" scale 5 string flea bass? I was bored and looking online and I only have seen 34". Does anyone know if that is even an option?

...the Modulus website has limited info at the moment.

I don't believe they do i think the flea 5 was the answer to why doesn't modulus make a 34" scale quantum. you could always go after a sweetspot quantum to get the similar flea vibe with the 35in scale bass
