Modulus Mob

Shimming a Modulus neck?

Folks,

One of my Modulus' action is just a tiny bit high for me. I have a non-truss rod Quantum.

I shim Fender basses all the time but have not shimmed a Modulus. The neck is perfect and has a great bow to it (not warped, etc. at all) but I don't want to completely bottom out all of my saddles.

Any luck with shimming a modulus with a graphite neck?

Thanks!

My Franken-VJ is shimmed. No problems.

I don't believe they do i think the flea 5 was the answer to why doesn't modulus make a 34" scale quantum. you could always go after a sweetspot quantum to get the similar flea vibe with the 35in scale bass

Yup. My Sweetspot to me sounds better than a 2 pickup Q5 or a Flea/Funk 5.

Killer bass and in the $1000 range when they come up (rarely) used.

Bummer...but that's kind of what I thought. I really like the body style/looks of the Flea bass, but I prefer my 5 strings to be 35".

I've seen the sweet spot Quantum's, but I haven't gotten a chance to play one.

Thx.

Shimmed mine with no problem. The neck is the easiest to remove/reinstall I have ever seen on a bass.... Removed, shimmed, reinstalled, restrung and retuned within 10-15 min.

The ONLY issue with shimming a Quantum IMO is that the end of the neck (ends just before the neck PU) that is usually flush with the body may stick up a bit. No an issue unless you are a slapper.

Better than nothing, but not by much.

Glad they are trying in any case, but for a company selling $3000-5000 guitars, their site would likely put off many potential buyers.

Just for the record.
They are a small company and many of the guys over there are wearing several hats at once.

Honestly its not the site that is going to sell them, its their reputation itself.

"If you looking at buying one, you probably already know what they are all about."

I'm not stirring the pot with You Baird, I'm just saying thats all...

Just a heads up this ones for sale or trade if anyone is interested

Don't get me wrong....(and I totally get your point).....

....I own 2 Modulus Quantums and they are my main basses. I will be adding 1-2 more ASAP also. I personally think Modulus is making the best basses for the $$$ available anywhere.

Having said that, attracting new buyers is easier with a profesional website... that is my only point. Not having a site of any kind for months? Not a chance that didn't affect Modulus' revenues. If they don't care, that is cool also... but I would guess that a company like Modulus would welcome growth.

Reputation and word of mouth only is great if you are Carl Thompson and a couple of other really small boutiques that have a 2-3 year waiting list.

Also, another comment was made below that Modulus was selling basses before the internet. I guess I agree with that, but not a great business strategy in this day and age IMO. Sam Ash and GC were also selling guitars before the internet... I am confident that they wouldn't be in business today (or at least as much smaller companies) if they didn't have websites.

Again, not bashing Modulus, just my opinion.

Greetings fellow Modulus lovers! Has someone here owned enough Quanutm's, or happens to know for other reasons what year Modulus changed from single action truss rod to duel action? I bought a very nice Q5 built in 04 that has a single action and I need a duel action. I'll send them an email but if anyone knows I would appreciate your help! Thanks!! :bassist:

O.K. I am answering my own question so people can learn form my mistake. I had always heard that Q5s with truss rods had dual action truss rods with a neutral center. Having owned basses with dual truss rods I envisioned that center neutral spot as being kind of a small indent where it felt like the rod simply "fell into space." AS this is what I was thinking when I got my near new 2004 Q5 I was disappointed as the truss rod was completely loose to the left and tighter to the right. Turning the rod to the right created a back bow and turning it to the loose feeling left still had back bow but less, and sadly waaaay to much. I thought the rod must have been broken so I took it to a friend who does fulltime guitar work and he said it was functioning properly but it was in fact a single action rod. My thoughts were along the lines of @#&*FFF, my near new $1800 Q5 is now useless.  :bawl: I put in an emergency call and email to Anderson at Modulus and was somewhat panicked as there were other nice Q5s available and I wanted to go, go, go as it took me many months to find my current very nice one. The story improves...

I called Anderson on the 5th and he happened to answer. I asked him what year Modulus went from single to dual action rods and he gladly said "never, always dual action!" Then he explained to me the error of my ways... It ends up this center, neutral spot (whatever the hell you want to call it!) was not a small bump or little bit of space at all. He explained that he center position could easily equal an entire rotation of the rod and I should turn turn turn to the left or right until I felt pressure and adjust according to my needs. I thanked him 17 times, hung up and within 5 minutes I had the neck exactly where I wanted it!

God bless America where even experienced people can be deadly wrong and when cooler heads prevail one realises the American Dream is still possible. I am now the proud owner of a sh*t hot Black Cherry Q5 with a nice Aguilar pre and Bartolini pickups with incredibly light strings and a straight as a board neck! :hyper: :bassist: Keep on rockin me, rockin me, rockin, baby baby baby...

Soooo, future travelers... be advised, the center spot on the Quantum's is equal to the distance across the grand canyon at its widest point and not some whimpy little indent! :D

I've got a battery related question:

I haven't changed the dual 9v batteries in my bass since I got it about a year ago. (They're Sony brand). I noticed today (and maybe a bit recently) the bass is sounding a little less "brilliant". Kinda like dead strings (I sorta doubt it's that cause I changed them a couple of months ago*)...
I checked the batteries and they only read like 14ma, whereas a new one I had lying around was at 35ma - both had 8.5V though... Would I be correct and assuming the Sony batteries have lost their 'juice' in terms of the tone...? (And therefore time to get a new pair)

*I say doubt cause I usually replace strings quite far apart like 6months or so at least, and last year when it had old strings it sounded fine but the only times I actually used it plugged in was at gigs [through the DI, which usually sounds a lot cleaner/sterile than the amp anyway].

I've had similar before with a different bass, tone just became 'weaker' all around and the battery swap did resolve it. I would definitely replace the batteries and make a mental note of the brand and the date you changed them as the lifespan of batteries varies greatly in my experience.
