Modulus Mob

Hey Mobsters, I own a beautiful 2012 Q5, that I have been trying to trade up to a Q6, which I don't see happening anytime soon. So I would like to change to E-C tuning and installing something like a Hipshot GB7. Any of you tried this and what was the actual tuner you used? Here is the thread in the classified section to show the pics of the bass. Thanks.

What is your asking price for your Q5?

Sweet gig tonight on Cape Cod (Falmouth) opening for Kung Fu. Of course, the Q5 gets the nod. All purty-like with new strings & a polish.

They are a great band & we are psyched to share the stage.

Anyone have a rough idea of how many 34" Quantums are out there? I'm rather curious.

There really aren't too many... a dozen maybe (including Phil and Mike's TBXs)? I know that when I ordered my first one (being sold by bassman), the neck broke their original mold and they had to build another - so they built another mold and started from scratch. The neck on that Chechen was the first on the new mold, and my current Walnut Q5 was the second neck made (and last, to my knowledge). Does anyone out there have more info?

Ok guys, you might think that I am a little crazy, but this tiny scratch on the picture you see, it really bugs me. It's gone it's way through the Matte Black finish, and got into its white undercoat.

Do you have any tips to how to get it to kind of disappear? Will the end result be good if I take a pencil and fill out?

I know this sort of scratches might not bug you guys, but it really means a lot to me.

As one who is a bit type-a about my gear, I totally get it. Are you sure the white is not bondo? Not that it matters but when I had Pat Wilkins refnish my gloss black FU to satin black, there was a whole bunch of bondo on the body.

To the matter at hand, have you thought about using a matte black touch up paint? Something like Dupli-Color NGSF104 Flat Black Exact-Match Touch-up Paint - they have a very fine roller tip (ballpoint) for getting into scratches, etc. Just a thought and good luck.

Thank you, I might then take a look at my local paintstore. Have you tried this paint out?

Bondo?! Who uses bondo on an instrument?!

That white appears to just be the primer.

Modulus did. I had bondo on my 2010 FU4 that I bought new from BC. I started to refinish it myself and found during stripping that there was bondo on the back of the upper horn and inside body contour. I was bummed actually as the body was revealing itself as a nice piece of flamed maple, but had to paint it again because of the bondo.

I remember reading about that here somewhere. Did Modulus ever give you a reasoning?

Never heard anything from Modulus on it. But Pat Wilkins, who did the refinishing, said it was not that uncommon. Sometimes when builders select a piece of wood for a clear finish because of the grain etc, they don't know there's a blemish until they start shaping. So rather than scrap the whole thing, the fill with bondo and paint. He did say that the bondo they used was good quality though.

And here is my Q6. It's a 2001, alder body, phonolic fretboard. My Q5 was perfectly balanced so I was a little disappointed when I received the Q6 because it was neck heavy. A set of hipshot ultralite tuners took care of that though. Came with EMG 45DC pickups and the BQC system but I swapped out the bridge pickup with a 45TW. This is now my main bass
