Modulus Mob

As some of you know, I've been a Modulus guy since 2004 and knew they were done this year. That didn't stop me from acquiring this last month:

I know they are "done", but the finished product is that good that I don't' regret the investment. Unlike many, I play this bass on gigs , even though it may be worth some big $$ in the future. These basses are a joy to play. I hope Joe P can carry the torch.

Just because they are done doesn't mean that their basses won't play great for a long time to come, including this fine specimen. I never understood the argument that people have to abandon perfectly good instruments just because the company goes under.

Hi,
I am a big modulus fan and currently have two. So i thought I would post them here and join up.
First my 1993 4 String TBX

Next,
My 2012 Flea (Funk Unlimited) in what Modulus called "Pepto Pink"
I later found out they only made 3 in this color. I actually called modulus one day and Andersen Page picked up. He spent like 45 minutes on the phone with me. I know the terrible things people said about their customer service but this was the one and only experience I had with them and it was great.

Unrealistic expectation.

Woah big fella. I am not "unrealistic" with my expectations, rather I feel in my gut that a company with a great product and fan base that fails prematurely will have instruments in the market place that could hold significant value, especially anniversary models. Not a factor, as I have a 2004 Q5 and this bass, plus 3 other Roscoe basses and play all accordingly at my gigs - I don't believe in owning an instrument purely as an art piece.

I am not banking my retirement or children's college tuition on this bass, rather I was trying to make a minor point that great instruments that could have potential value should still be used as tools in making music. Perhaps I did not make it clear.....

Sleepy- It's "Bip Slapper" :)

and, this thing rules, "you can have it when you pry it from my cold, dead hands...."

:D

I wasn't replying to any of the rest of it- of course they should be gigged and played- but I am just saying that you should not expect it to gain any real value. Even the anniversary model.

The only brands (besides old Fenders) that have had significant jumps in value are old Foderas (because new ones skyrocketed over the last 6-7 years), Pre-Gib Tobiases (mystique + unavailability) and Wals (for obvious reasons). Wals I think are the big non-Fender brand that have actually increased in value over time. The low numbers, mystique, and popularity with the Tool/Flea/Geddy crowds that help keep the value up, even if they are actually available for purchase again.

There are so many Modulus basses out there, and no real popularity/lust factor that will help that get some crazy following after they close. They'll probably stay leveled off, probably at the same levels they have been for the last few years. That is all I'm saying.

That said, I was in with a Q6 just before they shut down. I bought a Q5 back in 99 that I had as my main bass for the better part of a decade and the Q6 was even better. A shame, anyway.

I agree with your reply Angus.

Shame the way things went south for Modulus; as so many of us have chimed in this past year, I still look at my first Q5 and smile thinking of how I lusted after a Modulus and remember the day I finally pulled the trigger on one. I still would like to grab a 4 string jazz model.......(hmmm)... :crying:

Gotta go, the wife may see me on TB!

inthebassclef, those are two pretty cool and unique Modulus 4's! I'd be interested in your impressions of each and a comparison of necks, string spacing, electronics, and tone.

Hey hidesert,
The flea bass is a pretty standerd neck, very similiar to a musicman sterling. It has the bassline pickup so really thumpy with the bass turned up. But also really snappy with the treble up. Has a big range and a lot of power as it is 18V.

The TBX is its own animal. Very wide string spacing. The nut is like a C neck precision, I havent measured it but it is at least
C neck width. Really flat neck too, don't know exactly because I got it used but at least 12" radius but probably a little more, kind of feels like a wide spaced 5 string.
As far as the tone it has two EMG's in it. It has the sound of the early Q4's. Very deep to very high. Never really sounds like any other bass I have played. I have a set of Thomastik powerbass on it and it is so deep and full.

Hope this helps your question and let me know if you have any others. Thanks man.

That pink one looks nice! I never thought a pink bass could look good... My flat black/satin black (what's the difference?) is getting its scuffs and scratches, but I especially hate this:

When I bought it, I wasn't aware of that matte finishes will end up looking like that, so I am thinking that it might be a mistake by me to choose that finish. However, it looks so badass with that finish!
