Modulus Mob

Cool bass amongst cool basses! Could you post a set of pics and a description of this one...historically interesting to me.
Which leads me to the question of when the company officially started selling basses? Were the 25th Anniversary basses built in 2000, 2001, or ????

Knobs are really close together.. Bart pickups. Spoke to Anderson and to Geoff a long while ago. Neither could identify exactly what this bass was. Bassstar was a bolt on 4 string neck. Extremely hard to find 5'ers and neck through.

Electronics are amazing. 9v pre. All original as far as I can tell. Knobs have been changed (Only an educated guess..) Knob configuration is High/Mid/Low concentric and the 2 top knobs are Volume/Volume

The pattern in the graphite is what leads me to believe this is an extremely early Modulus. 1976 is when they started selling basses along with the Alembic name. 1978 was the patent year (I am pretty sure) so this is probably right about that time.

I think this may have been an employee built bass in the very early stages of Modulus. I have e-mailed Geoff, but have yet to get a response about it. Obviously, Anderson had not been there long enough to know about this specific bass. I hae yet to see another 5 string Bassstar Neck thru, so it may have been like a prototype for the Quantum or just a one off since they did a lot of custom orders back then

Do (uh, I mean did) the Genesis necks have a standard size/shape heel & bolt pattern? Never saw one on a non-Modulus instrument before.

Yes. Modulus offered the VJ or VP neck and the Q4 necks as standard replacement necks like they did years earlier with the Bassstar bolt on necks. The Vj or VP necks were $499 and the Q4 necks were $699 for them. It took 12 weeks to produce my VJ neck. Alder wrapped graphite. It is as sweet as they come. Perfect in every way. They really were spectacular craftsman at Modulus.

I think that one of the problems Modulus had was not selling direct. I had 2 VJ bodies and I must have contacted 5 different dealers and got neck prices from $600-1200...no joke. Had they sold parts direct I think it would have benefited them. The last price I got for a naked Q5 neck was over $1,000.

They did not come with tuners and the price for these necks were listed in the catalog! I bought mine direct from Anderson. However, I was working in the industry at the time and got a discount, but the prices were posted on the web
