Modulus Mob

I loved the neck on my 5 string, but the body was a bit wide. Foolishly traded it away. Will get it (or a similar one) back one day. Mine was a JJ, maple board. Great b string, but the rest was no slouch either! 19mm string spacing, but that didn't bother me.

Custom painting my 2008 Flea bass .

I was tired of the Sunburst Classic look and ask a Pro Custom painter (not painter, this guy is a true artist) to custom paint my bass. The guy's name is Neimar V8 and he's a talented artist from Brazil. He used automotive paints and PU clear to finish the bass.

The art I choose was "Martini Miss" , a draw from the californian pop art artist called Mel Ramos. He's from Oakland (he's 80 years old) and he is very famous for his nude girls draws.

Also, this draw is on the album cover of the latest (from Sony) Brazilian Funk / Rock band called "Jota Quest www.jotaquest.com.br. They are very famous in Brazil and Latin America . The single "Mandou bem" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppdkWi0613cfeaturing Nile Rodgers is a smashing hit in Brazil and South America.

Many thanks and I hope you like it !

Wow. I would have never thought I would like something like that, especially on a Modulus, but I think it turned out pretty cool. The graphic fits perfect and looks great. What did he charge if you don't mind my asking?

U$ 600 , not cheap. But this is pure art and 2 weeks of hard work !

Off that topic, has anyone tried a set of Ernie Ball cobalts on a quantum? Can't seem to get a straight answer if they'll fit a 35" scale... Don't wanna' open them if they won't...

I have on my funk unlimited 4 and I wasn't the biggest fan, keep in mind though I don't particularly care for Ernie Ball strings in general. I view them as the safest option ever, get a pair of rotosounds they`re absolutely killer. please don't let my opinion be what makes you try the strings but I really think they would fit just fine. I actually own a quantum as well and I am rocking deadarios. I'm not happy with those either but this is coming from a guy who's never absolutely loved any pair of strings. maybe I just suck haha

I actually have a set of TI powerbass on my quantum and man oh man do they kill. Super sustain and the deep end of the quantum's boom through

Both my Q5's have D'ads EXL 170's (Nickels). I use them for my 2 Modulus basses and 3 Roscoe's. I sometimes use DR strings as well, nickels where possible. Feel is more important to me....

That pretty much all I use as well...
Die slow, not stiff like most SS, consistent and very very balanced tonal wise.

EXL and XLs are yummy, like a good Italian roast with a Long Island bagel.

Finally joined the Mob!

Here's my New-to-me Modulus Q5. It's a 91. I overpaid, but they don't come around often in south Louisiana. Plus I really needed a 5er and this was the first one that really felt right to me.

The neck is fantastic, and the B-string is ridiculous. It sounds great but it needs a few tweaks.

I'm not sure what preamp is in it. It's Treble and Bass without center detents and it sounds like it's tuned similarly to the one in my 79 Music Man. It's alright, but I think an OBP-3 will make it more versatile.

It has a Bart Quad in the neck position wired to a switch for some combination of Series/Parallel/P-bass that I'm going to have to reverse engineer to figure out. The pickup at the bridge is a Bart dual coil that seems to be wired incorrectly for series (red to white and the black wires to the pan and ground).

Even with all the quirks, it sounds awesome. Here are some pics:

Nice looking Quantum 5! Congrats and enjoy. I really like the pre-truss-rod necks like yours. Agree that a brighter, more modern pre will likely enhance the tone palette on the modern side.
I have an early single EMG pickup Q5 (Sweetspot) that has 2 DIP mini toggle switches located on the top. I believe they originally were inside the electronics cavity until a previous owner "liberated" them. It's a wonderful bass.
I was wondering if yours might be a special edition that I vaguely recall hearing about that offered a more traditional wood selection and finish, but I don't remember the details. Anyone?

That would be really cool. Any idea if the serial number would give any clues as far as special editions or anything. It looks pretty standard. 9101961 I think.
